For a free Dl (so in theory reaches the largest possible audience) that was a really provocative statement of general Real World affairs.
Gutsy move

A (relatively) fun ten minutes after the bittersweet-ness of yesterday's Benny boxset, what more do you want from a free release?

I wonder if we’ll get more stories like this in the future? In terms of free downloads I mean.

There is a short trailer for Torchwood Among Us amongst the trailers at the end. Is this season 7, or a reference back to seasons 5/6?

A decent 10 minutes in the company of Colchester.
And Torchwood Among Us! Series 7 exists!

Mr. Colchester’s existential scream about humanity and the hopes he holds for the future summed up so much of what I feel about our world today I could have written it myself.

Well, this was a somewhat depressing commentary of the state of the current world. The end is nigh, and it is apparently so bad, even invading aliens turn around and leave after seeing the current news. Pretty much as I have been feeling all to often lately. Writing and performance were great (and at times clever) and I liked this, despite the depressing outlook.

Well, I was looking for something brief to listen to (seems like most of my backlog consists of 2+ hours-long stuff) and landed on Postcards from Mr Colchester. Which ends up being not just my first exposure to the Torchwood audios, but also my first exposure to Torchwood in general -- well, not counting seeing people mock the "sexy cyberman" thing from the TV series.
Some of y'all might jump in to inform me that this was a terrible idea, and I should have started elsewhere, but... my approach to media has always been that if a story is any good, it can stand on its own, and if it cannot stand on its own, no amount of additional context or supplemental media can make it any better. And, for my money, this (very short) story stands on its own pretty well. It's very succinctly written and well-acted, and winds up pulling everything together rather well. Simply speaking as someone ignorant of the broader Torchwood ourvre, it certainly left me feeling much more interested in pursuing further audios than before I listened to it -- especially if Colchester winds up being a prominent character, used to similar effect as here.
So, yeah. Fun stuff. Really glad Big Finish sent this one out to us all for free.
That said, I do think the ending was a bit... unearned. It feels almost perfunctory, like the writer felt obligated to end on an optimistic note, but there's not really anything here to justify that optimism. I kinda wish they'd gone for something a bit less cliched, but ah well. Being so short and so imminently cheap, it's hard to criticize Postcards too much. Ultimately it's a 4/5 story for me -- really good, but could have been a bit better.

Ultimately it's a 4/5 story for me -- really good, but could have been a bit better. I am a bit like you.... I actually still have not watched the TV series- reason, I can mentally not deal with things like what I heard is happening in "Children of Earth" and I really really dislike juvenile sexual humor. So yeah, I am not the Torchwood target group. But I have come to love a few stories, mainly because they include past companions or interesting original characters. Since I do not know any of the characters from TV, I just have to roll with it. In most of the cases, I could actually follow without problem and without knowing who all these characters were.
I liked the audios featuring Jo and Ace as well as Sgt. Andy (from Stranded). And I absolutely adore Billis Manger. He is an awesome villain, and his audios are all fantastic (and you do not even know his role in Torchwood, just listen to some delicious evilness).
So if you liked Colchester here, you could go ahead with the two episodes featuring him and Ace. They are both good. Even for people like us who have no Torchwood knowledge.
Ace and Colchester are a great duo, they bounce off each other and the banter is awesome.

Thanks! I'll add 'em to my list.
I assume they're... The Red List and Death in Vencie, right? Assuming the info on the wiki is correct.

Simply speaking as someone ignorant of the broader Torchwood ourvre, it certainly left me feeling much more interested in pursuing further audios than before I listened to it -- especially if Colchester winds up being a prominent character, Similar to you & tuigirl, Kestrel, I also hadn’t watched any Torchwood tv episodes before I bought #27 Torchwood: Sync (am a fan of Indira Varma in her other roles & I liked Annette Badland in the Paternoster Gang audios.) Interesting story summary & beautiful cover. I enjoyed the story, & listened to some free excerpts on the BF website & the podcast. Encountered Sgt. Andy in Stranded but didn’t realize then that he was a huge part of the TW storyline. Then I bought The Torchwood Archive because the About said it was “A special feature-length story celebrating 10 years of Torchwood!” & it had lots of characters (compared to a typical TW Monthly) so I figured, value for money. Lol. I didn’t understand huge parts of it since I didn’t get the references. I will relisten to it someday. 😊 Then took a chance on #40 Save Our Souls, because: Queen Victoria, summary, intriguing cover. Loved it, though different mood from Sync. Next was #36 Dissected with Martha (& my first encounter with Gwen), more Queen Victoria #35 Fortitude & tried some Billis #33 Dead Man’s Switch. Different moods & pace. Liked them all. Couldn’t resist #55 The Great Sontaran War (Dan Starkey, & my first encounter with Ianto), #53 Empire of Shadows (before I watched The Impossible Planet & The Satan Pit on my bro-in-laws old dvds), #54 Curios (more Billis) & #51 The 5 People (look at Yvonne on the cover!) 😁 of course that led to buying TW One boxsets & watching Yvonne’s tv episodes on dvd. Basically it was cover art & story summaries that pulled me in & now have complete TW BF except for next year’s preorders. It was only recently that I was able to watch the first tv episode. Gwen & everyone’s introduction. This was long after I had already bought & listened to lots of TW BF. The Torchwood Monthly is a good story length. Perfect for short periods of free time. 👍🏻⭐️
