You know, I think 'Winter' has just become one of my Big Finish stories of the year so far...

Started on this. 1 hour in. Basically pretty much what I expected this to be. Youth detectives investigating supernatural stuff. Real supernatural, not fake like in most German series of this kind. So far not bad, but also nothing that blows my mind.

Is the third story meant to be played backwards? I listened to it in that order last night and must admit I didn't seen the point for it being that way. Although in it's defence there were some fantastic character scenes. Aitch Wylie and Jake Dudman are brilliant in this set although Dudman does channel his Eleven a little throughout. Looking forward to the final story this evening. All in all it's been a pleasing diversion from the Doctor Who fare and maybe a natural successor to The Tomorrow People audios.

Finished this and found the whole thing quite endearing. Kate Winslet puts in a genius performance really given that she channels the inexperience of her younger self with the confidence and talent that has grown since. In short you can really believe this is the same character she played all those years ago. Victoria Lambert does a great job too; again amazing considering as she hasn't acted since 1991!
Will there be a second run?

I have now finished 3 of the 4 stories. It takes me a long time because I just cannot concentrate on audios at the moment.... anyways, I tried to put my finger on of what this set, and especially story 3 reminded me of. And then it came to me- Anyone remember the Simpsons episode where the teachers become cannibals and eat all the kids? THIS is what this story is. It is just played straight and not for laughs. I think this is the most accurate way to describe it.
I like this. It is nothing mind-blowing, but well done, well acted and the usual BF quality.

Finished it on my forest walk today. It was alright. The third story was best for me. Compared to my German audios of this style, the story and characters are entertaining average, nothing mind- boggling and no classic. But it is good entertainment and the performances certainly are very good.

I am a fan of several German youth audio series which use this setting as their bread and butter, so I just was curious how this would compare.

Wow!
This is the most fun I've had with Big Finish for a long time!
I didn't grow up with Dark Season; instead, I came across a description of it on a Lovecraft message board in the early 2000s, where a poster likened Mr. Eldritch to Nyarlathotep, the alien outer god who gives humanity gifts of technology that will destroy us, and it is that lens through which I still view him.
In the past, I've described the original Dark Season as "Classic Doctor Who, but set in a school and much cheaper looking" and while not wrong, my rather glib description misses what makes the programme so brilliant. The performances are perfect (even small parts, like Olivia), the direction is outstanding, the dialogue is fast and clever, it moves at a breakneck pace and never wears out its welcome it feels authentic because it is. It has that sincerity that children's programming needs.
I enjoyed the recently released novelization. I don't know what sentiment is here about RTD as a prose writer, but I enjoy his stuff, because his adaptation, much like his adaptation of Rose, expands and humanizes established characters.
For this set, I had avoided any publicity, except for the unavoidable information that Kate Winslet would be returning to the role of Reet. This led me to conclude that it would be a direct continuation of the original series, probably picking up at the video arcade that was teased at the end.
However, it's set in modern times and it is much better for it. The new cast injects energy and the returning players tether it to the original setting.
Spring
Does everything an introductory story should. Establishes the setting and the characters and gives us an idea of what we're in for. I enjoyed this. Of all the stories, it felt closest to the original series.
Summer
The big problem with this one is that it would have worked better five or ten years ago. You no longer need a film crew to be famous; you just need one video to go viral. Yes, that was the part I found unrealistic. But it was entertaining and had enough snappy writing that I enjoyed it.
Autumn
This one never came together for me. I liked Chase as a baddie and his unctious, friendly menace ("Love that for you") was the star of the show. It was evocative of Buffy the Vampire (though I suppose it's hard to avoid that if you're setting your story in a school) and had a lot of components that felt like they should work together, but never quite did.
Winter
The star of the show!
It's got everything I want! Mister Eldritch hamming it up. ("Nothing in the world came stop me now!") Mister Eldritch dropping the title every two minutes ("This will be my DARKEST SEASON!") Mister Eldritch...respecting Taylor's pronouns, which was actually something that caused me some concern, but I'm glad that he intones orders like, "Secure them!"
I've always liked Marcie. I've told people that she's my favourite incarnation of the Doctor. I was thrilled when she got a mention in Damaged Goods. She's wonderful here as a member of UNIT. (She did say, "Trap One", right? I didn't mishear that?)
The worst thing I can say is that the ending felt a little bit abrupt. But it was great. I've said it before and I'll say it again.
Dark Season is everything I want from Doctor Who.

Wow! In the past, I've described the original Dark Season as "Classic Doctor Who, but set in a school and much cheaper looking" To be fair, I’d say it doesn’t look dramatically different to the McCoy era; combined with the ‘something weird happening in suburbia’, it honestly feels like a natural successor to Survival to me, but with kids instead of adult characters. Marcie even has some Doctor-like eccentricities. It’s one of my favourites of those CBBC sci-fi / fantasy series that were very common in the 90s. Mr Eldritch is a vivid childhood memory. Still haven’t listened to this set but need to get around to it.
