Well, this is nice. A very heartfelt parable about dementia and the loneliness of old people. And Lisa is a great reader.

My work is based on helping older lonely and isolated people, occasionally I get referrals suffering from dementia.
I'll have to give this one a listen as the subject is close to my heart.

I also work with a lot of older people with dementia and just adored this story.

I thought this was a pleasant listen. Beautifully read by Lisa Bowerman and Matt’s Doctor and era were perfectly realised, with this story very much playing to their strengths.
As an aside, I hope that the Paul Spragg Opportunity gets a bit of a shake up for this year. Each and every winning story has been great, but it’s hard to escape that they’re all heavily sentimental stories in which the lead character has some sort of issue where the Doctor swoops in and changes their life. There must be so many entries submitted that aren’t like that at all but they surely never stand a chance because of how specific of a story they want.

I suppose the problem is due to the nature of the event being to commemorate the memory of a much loved and missed colleague they might feel it a bit inappropriate to have say a knock about comedy or a straight horror piece as a story. Although personally, I'd love to see a few stories like that.

Although personally, I'd love to see a few stories like that. I think you’re right in that’s what they’re perceiving, but I think it’s misplaced. The opportunity exists to encourage aspiring writers. They then add rules which restricts certain types of stories, alongside licensing restrictions, but ultimately every year the winning story fits a certain mould. Based on that you may not be able to submit a comedy, but you could submit a time travel thriller and equally not be within a chance because it doesn’t suit the style of story they want, based on the output we’ve had since the initiative launched. Personally, I think the intention behind the opportunity is sound; encourage aspiring writers. It doesn’t need to get more granular than that, licensing restrictions aside. And this is no slight on the winning stories we’ve had, they’re all wonderful! I would just like to see more variety and the spirit of the opportunity stand.

Another impressive BF debut and a worthy winner. My brief thoughts are up at CultBox.
