Next to Blake’s 7, Survivors must be one of the more successful non Who spin offs of Big Finish.
Really need to get around to giving it a listen one of these days.

You can get 3 & 4 in a bundle too. Next to Blake’s 7, Survivors must be one of the more successful non Who spin offs of Big Finish. Really need to get around to giving it a listen one of these days. I strongly recommend them, they're very well done.

Spoilers for New Dawn 2 {Spoiler}"Producer Emma Haigh said: “I’m so pleased we can learn more about Abby and Jenny again and the continuing lives of the survivors. This series is a fascinating exploration of what can happen when society is seriously challenged by a warming environment and dwindling natural resources. But also shows the true kindness of human beings to one another.”"
Hold up, Jenny? Didn't she die in New Dawn 2?

Survivors: New Dawn 3- The Turning.
Given that director/writer Ken Bentley has said on previous interviews how proud he is that Survivors has become a female-centric series under BF's stewardship, it would be a waste of time to hope that this story, penned by him, would seek to balance out that trend. All the major parts are female, the men are either supporting characters or wetter than a rainy Tuesday. I'm not a particular supporter or detractor of any gender but would hope for a certain equilibrium; there isn't that here, and that's the way Survivors is now. It doesn't bother me particularly, I still enjoy this range, but it is noticeable and gives a certain repetition to certain events.
Part 1 is mainly Jenny's story, part 2 finds Abbey taking more of a centre stage. Nick Briggs's music takes on a slightly more bombastic quality, which is fitting due to the more epic, violent nature of some of the scenes. It's good, earthy drama with more than a note of horror and violence. Even after all this time, the apocalyptic nature of events is still relentless with a pleasing lack of a quick solution. The acting is often excellent, with special mention for Belinda Lang's memorable turn as Celia Tate. The story is solid and well told - it could do with a stronger central villain, but has several very enjoyable moments and proves to be pleasingly grim and gritty, enhanced by the usual superb sound design.

3.3 Samaritans.
Perhaps it's time I called time on this range after all. Samaritans is a breather episode, where Abbey and Jenny recover from events in the previous story, whilst random antagonists seem to be setting things up for New Dawn 4. The leads meet with 'John', a kind and gentle fellow who they take the time to note is something of an exception, because men are usually brutal and non-thinking (can't recall the exact quote, but that was the gist). This imbalance has finally got the better of me. That, and the fact that this story is a non-event save for some profundities and mournful recollections. The usual excellent acting and sound design are all there, but I can sense I've fallen out of love with the direction in which the series has gone.
