So it just came to my attention that this year marks this series 10th anniversary. I cannot believe it's been that long. Any other fans on here?
You can actually say in a way Life on Mars is what finally brought me to Doctor Who as I became such a fan of John Simm that I wanted to see more that he did. Hence my first Doctor Who eps were his Master eps with 10 & Martha.

Yeah, I adore it. Honestly Kim, you'd find it difficult to find a British person, especially in the cult crowd, who isn't a fan. It was a big, big show.
I like that, like Eccleston, Simm doesn't like sticking around a project too long. It means that we got two cracking, tights seasons instead of the original plan which was four. Who knows if the quality would have been sustainable? The aborted ones were adapted into Ashes To Ashes which, while a fine show at times, was nowhere near as good. If some of those stories were done in Life On Mars in a potential series 3 and 4, I'm not sure it would be as highly regarded now.

10 years? No way, I can't believe it's been that long. A superb series... I never liked the BBC Test Card (even before this), I always thought there was something odd about that girl and clown.

I guess it was but I really count 10 turning into 11 as my first (I also technically saw 9 turn into 10 before that). But it's not really the act of regeneration but the change itself that is interesting. And you can only really experience that change for the first time if there is anticipation and you don't know what to expect with a new actor coming in and you are experiencing it with everyone else.. But as for Ashes to Ashes confession I only watched a few eps and gave up on it. I probably didn't give it enough of a chance but I wasn't happy about a sequel. I didn't like that it was moving to London, the 80's and wouldn't have John Simm (although I have since come to very much appreciate Keely Hawes) but most importantly I loved the ending of Life of Mars. It's got to be one of my top favorite endings ever. I loved that its still left things open to interpretation. And I'm still not happy that Ashes to Ashes tried to explain things. Now I really want to rewatch Life on Mars again. But it's hard to find the time. I do own the DVDs but usually I find the best time to watch anything is to and from work. But sadly Life on Mars isn't available digitally here. Only the awful American remake is (I guess the music rights were an issue). |

I'm also a big fan of John Simm - he's one of the actors I watch anything he's in. My first exposure to him was a sitcom that I loved in the mid 90s and hadn't seen again till earlier this year called Men Of The World. It doesn't really hold up at all - it's sub-mne Behaving Badly - but it's fun seeing Simm so young in a sitcom of all things and it's the first time he worked with David Thelfall (they got back together last year for Code Of A Killer). www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWmiy1KWvbwI guess I must have seen him in Cracker around the same time. As for young Simm I thought he was really great in the first series of the Lakes. Another show I never bothered to watch the 2nd series because the first series ended perfectly for me. I thought the series did a really good job of showing small town hypocrisy. Simm's character flipping the coin on the boat in whether he would give up on life or not Other stuff I really like that he was in State of Play, Sex Traffic, & Crime & Punishment. Although I always felt Simm was a bit underappreciated. Never awarded and barely nominated. Even on Life on Mars I felt Philip Glenister (who don't get me wrong I also adored) seemed to get most of the praise. |

I don't think he's under appreciated here - he gets prime-time leading roles pretty much whenever he wants (though he's been concentrating on stage for the last year). He's had more leading roles than Glennister, I think. Simm is a perfect everyman actor and Glennister got more praise for LoM because Gene was a much showier part than Sam. Gene also became a bit of a pop-culture icon with that show.
His last big tv role, in the show Prey, was a real tour-de-force. The kinda cliched on the run from the cops thing could have been dull but he was fantastic as the falsely accused protagonist and really sells the imjustice and the danger with ease. The only downer in that series is Craig Parkison playing pretty much exactly the same dirty cop he does in the BBC's Line Of Duty.
I think my all-time favourite Simm role would be as Sexby in The Devil's woman alongside Peter Capaldi, Michael Fassbdender, Dominic West and Andrea Riseborough. He played a part very different to any I've seen him play before.

I don't remember when it will air, but I'm really looking forward to it. Series 2 finished here just before Christmas. It's a fresh story each year so Simm isn't in the second run. His replacement? Enjoyed Life on Mars (and Ashes to Ashes)
I was a bit jarred (and disappointed) that the plot of the opening sequence ended up resolved off-screen without any details as to how it is was resolved.. though what we got instead was probably better.
(I understand, originally, Sam was going to return to the modern day at the end of every episode which would have allowed for him to be involved in an on-screen resolution)
