Many fans are quick to point out fault with the show, especially when something new is revealed but I'm wondering when has the show truly exceeded expectations. Some of my exceeded expectations are;
David Tennant following Christopher Eccleston
Matt Smith following David Tennant
Peter Capaldi's performance from beginning to end, his final episodes in particular
Michelle Gomez as Missy
Billie Piper as Rose
Catherine Tate as Donna
Paul Mcgann appearing in Night of the Doctor
I could keep going, there are so many moments in classic and new who that are amazing.

Audio commentary on the classic DVDs. As a recent convert to the classic series, for me, the commentary often is better than the actual show. Case in Point- Time Flight. The commentary is amazing and hilarious.Or take Arc of Infinity. I already expected entertainment from the commentary because Colin is always value for money. But it was even better. Clue- constant chicken noises.
Peter Capaldi also was an absolute winner for me, and his series got better an better, reaching the pinnacle with series 10.
A more recent example- Power of the Doctor. I had zero expectations. What I got was something wonderful and I cried tears of joy.
Meeting the actors in real life. Never had been a fan of the 5th Doctor and his crew. But after I have met these guys personally, and had chats with them, and saw them on stage bantering, I warmed up to them. A lot. And of course I will never forget meeting Colin- he is even more amazing in real life.

Pretty much ditto for me too, except I might substitute Colin for Sylvester - who's a favourite anyway - but I found him just as scatty, idiosyncratic and lovable in real life as I found his portrayal.
Going back a lot further, I have to mention the story Logopolis. Series 18 is forever my favourite series, and of course, Tom Baker was/is perfect as The Doctor. My question was, when I heard he was leaving at the end of the season - what story could be 'big' enough to take down the unstoppable Fourth Doctor? Chris Bidmead's unusual and very clever tale managed to do just that, as well as ending with - for me - the most heart-wrenching regeneration of them all. That it was completed with ten minutes before the end of that particular recording block makes it even more impressive!

Oh yes, Sylvester is amazing, too. His panels are legendary and of all the many convention panels I have seen in my life, the ones by Anthony Daniels and Sylvester stick out. Because they both do not sit on stage, but wander through the audience, chat and joke with everyone and making the whole thing a very inclusive interactive event. Sadly, I have so far not had a chance to chat with Sylvester, because the convention I went to he was only able to attend one day and there were huge crowds. Maybe I will have better luck next year at the next German Who convention? It is Timelash 7 and Sophie Aldred has already said she would be coming, so hopefully, we also get Sylvester.

He's absolutely wonderful. He's also my nephew's (who was with me) favourite. Sylv seemed genuinely pleasantly surprised that he was anyone's favourite. On stage, he described himself as the man who killed Doctor Who back in the 80s (I hope he was joking!). A lovely, genuinely eccentric man.

That the classic actors make an effort with their clothing for the stage and the fan pictures at conventions. When I had my picture taken with Sylvester, he wore something that looked like something a more distinguished 7th Doctor could have worn (without that horrible questionmark jumper). Even his silver cane fitted right in! And Colin wore bright yellow suspenders and his psychedelic colourful Crocs.
Excentric, yes, certainly, but never boring.

Oh absolutely. Peter often brings his Fifth-Doctor-like hat with him too.
I imagine part of the wonders of working with Sylvester is seeing how he reads a line. I'll bet he never reads it the same way twice! There are some who say his performance is erratic, and I think I'd agree, but as a positive rather than a negative. He's a 'dangerous' performer - and this is why (here we go) I find his current BF stories so lacklustre. He should be given incredible concepts and momentous things to do, instead of (for example) just another story featuring the Cybermen.
But I didn't mean to turn this into any kind of rant, rather a celebration of how the classic Doctors always exceed our expecations (see, I've gone back on topic)!!

Just reading this brings back the memories from "Lords Of Time 1" in Melbourne Australia (weekend trip). Peter, Colin, Sylvester and Paul were the main Doctor guests, plus about 4-5 other classic era companions. Peter and Janet clearly dearly love each other as long-time close friends, they "proved" this by giving each other a tight-lipped kiss that freaked them out- playing up to the crowd LOLZ. Sylvester basically spent the whole time, as tuigirl rightly says, walking through the crowd.. I have the perfect shot of him standing next to my twin brother who was sitting in the aisle seat- they were almost the same height LOLZ. All 4 know how to handle a crowd- You could see the emotion in their faces with the responses they got when discussing their respective era's.

I love the Seventh Doctor, I feel he has a lot of potential with Big Finish. I truly think there's a lot of room to do cool things with him. You've got Doctors like 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 that have had development and plenty of diverse stories both on TV and audio. There's a few Doctors with Big Finish that have been less exposed for one reason or another, how cool would it be to tell some epic multi set stories with Doctor 1, 2, 3, 7, 9 or 11?

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Every single Doctor that has been cast on the revived show.
The 50th anniversary celebrations.
The Five Doctors
The Five-ish Doctors
Remembrance of the Daleks - I was watching out of habit because I hadn’t been impressed with Season 24 but that opening story turned me right back on track again.
The way that every Doctor and nearly all the companions and supporting characters have been absolutely wonderful ambassadors for the show.

I've only seen Doctors 5,6,7 & 8 together once, and they were great together. Their camaraderie reminded me a little of Top Gear (but without the cars!) - old friends who knew and anticipated each other's responses before they had given them. There seemed a genuine love - as you say - between them all, and it's great to see.
I was interested in the slight collective, good-humoured groan when audience members were invited to ask questions - the first one being, inevitably, 'Which was your favourite story?' I wonder how many times they'ver been asked that?

Just right now- Mawdryn Undead. Coming just off Arc of Infinity and Time Flight (where the best thing really is the commentary) I am stunned. This is quite impressive in comparison. Certainly does exceed my expectations. I had just planned to watch these episodes during my meals, but now I am so gripped by the developments, that I will actually continue watching.

When Tennant took over. I became a fan during the wilderness years so having the show back was a big deal for me because it was the first new Who other than the TV movie that I would be seeing that wasn't technically a rerun even if it was new to me. I loved Eccleston and was surprised that there would already be a regeneration. I was a little concerned that, after finally getting the show back on the air and having a great Doctor headlining it that there was potential for that momentum to be stymied with a disruption in casting. I didn't know Tennant at all so I had no experience with which to judge the announcement. When he arrived I loved him immediately and he instantly became my favorite Doctor. Still is. My worries were for naught, I'm happy to say.
The RTD era exceed my expectations throughout it's original run: The fun and chemistry between 10 and Rose, the joy of seeing Sarah Jane and K-9 again, the thrill and terror of the Daleks invading Earth, the horror of The Satan Pit, the terror of the Weeping Angels, the charm of Donna and her family, the surprise of the Master's return. It was such an exciting show to watch every week. Everything felt fresh and new, and I felt I never knew quite what to expect, which was lovely. It's still my favorite era of Who and I'll always be grateful to everyone involved with that era for keeping my on the edge of the couch every week. I can't wait to see what RTD has in store for us the second time around.
