I totally agree on the push back regarding x meets y gimmicks.
Returning monsters and characters should only be part of the equation if they serve the story in a meaningful or original way.
I've got a backlog of Gallifrey to listen to next but the reviews have sold me on this set.

Resistor is enjoyable and has a lot of good ideas, unfortunately the execution is a little odd at times. For example exciting motorcycle sequence has Nyssa describing things that both she and and the Doctor should be able to see, so it’s only us listeners she’s doing it for. But ultimately, it feels fresh and new and I liked that.
I’ll happily keep supporting this range if it keeps producing new stories like this pair.

I liked Pursuit of the Nightjar, but thought there were a few detrimental elements that stopped it being fantastic. I didn’t think there was enough story to sustain four parts and think there’s a fine line between a slower pace and padding; part three needn’t have existed, for example, and I think the limited number of characters and locations prevented any real worldbuilding behind what is needed for the plot. I also thought the small cast inevitability made the twist stand out like a sore thumb. And I don’t think Davison really gets across the enthusiasm and the fond recollection material. It’s not a slight on him; it’s just not his Doctor and that’s fine, you tell stories for the appropriate incarnations. It’s a complete contrast to Tegan’s moving monologue at the beginning of part four.
It’s fine enough, just felt its limitations ended up being to its detriment.

Resistor is a mostly cracking first half before descending into a nonsensical second. There’s no need for the sci-fi plot and it just means an undercooked story juggling too many concepts.
I buy into this new direction for the Fifth Doctor, with character driven, lower stake stories. It’s just that the output seems to be struggling to craft plot that is appropriate for the running length. I think it doesn’t help that Janet’s inclusion is no longer the novelty it was. Fingers crossed next year’s output is a return to form; Five’s final few years in the main range were excellent.

I think a fifth doctor and new companion era would be really interesting, not sure where you could fit it into continuity though?
I suppose you could just have 5 travelling alone without explanation and leave it to the listeners imagination where the tv companions are at that point. I seem to remember a period in the Marc arc where 5 needed a break?

Pursuit of the Nightjar. Well, we had similar stories before, and the hook that the Doctor just happens to land at the time of the greatest achievement of one of his heroes is also nothing new. The story could also be described as slow, however, this gives opportunity to show the character background and development, it sets the scene, creates the necessary atmosphere and lets the threat develop. This however makes the pacing seem off, and parts are just not that exciting. Otherwise, some really great performances here, from all of the main cast. Especially the Doctor and Tegan get some juicy emotional material to work with. There are also a few fun moments, like putting on spacesuits in zero gravity „You put your leg through one of the arms“. I also loved the cute robot bird. This is no classic or a revelation, but nice well performed entertainment for the 2 hour runtime.

By the way, this is how one of the Nightjar species looks.
This is from now on how the cute robotic bird in the story looks in my mind.

Second story starts good, with great atmosphere and setting. I also liked the band gig and the Doctor playing the drums. But the second half is a bit confusing and just not that thrilling. Also, the side-plot about the gay semi-boyfriend.... it felt tagged on. They did "gays being threatened historials" before and they did them much better- just look at Albie's Angels. But here? -"I am gay" -girlfriend: "Oh bummer, I thought we could have had something more." Where is the emotional impact? Also, the ending. Would you just disappear without telling your family? So, in short, the second story is not really a classic.
