I liked this one more and more with each successive story. I had a hard time focusing on the second, but I think I was just too tired and trying to do too much while listening. I really liked Danny Horn as Kazran. Much more than I was expecting too. And I thought Winston, Ceasar and a Dalek worked wonderfully together. It was my favorite story in the set.

Although I'm unlikely to purchase this at the current time, it certainly seems like an interesting idea for a boxset, I am curious though...are there any clues as to where this slots into The Ninth Doctor's timeline? He's travelling alone in his story isn't he? Which would most likely place it before or during Rose...

Did anyone else pick on the fact that the nurse in The Chartwell Metamorphosis said she had known The Doctor since he was a child?

Did anyone else pick on the fact that the nurse in The Chartwell Metamorphosis said she had known The Doctor since he was a child? Followed by the word "Cheecky" said by the Doctor, obviously meant as a joke.

Hmmmmm, I've never taken the "Cheeky" rejoinder to mean something is untrue, more that it's a stretching of the facts, it still leaves me to wonder if the nurse, although clearly young herself, has known The Doctor a long time.

I'm putting it during, because my personal reading of the hairdryer scene is that Rose is the first story post regeneration.

Ha, the extras explain all, from the Nurse is the same character as the female child. Lily Arwell, from "The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe".

The return of Kasran and Lily was on all the pre-release publicity. Made me wonder if there were any people - just one - who thought "Well, I was on the fence but if I can learn more about the little girl from The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe - shut up and take my money!"

Also something worth noting maybe - between the cover being released and the boxset being sent out, Kasran was taken off the cover and Lily put on. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

My guess is the one on the left is before they knew Lily Arwell would be able to make an appearance, but how did they decide she was more popular than Kazran considering the character is from the least popular of the Christmas specials?

Kasran and Lily were both revealed at the same time and recorded at the same week so it can't be that. I wonder if they just thought it was a bit off not to have any female representation on the cover, especially after River being upstaged by McGann on the cover of her own boxset.

Before I start listening to this on the way home, I notice no comments yet about Alan Barnes's Hounded story - how was that? That's actually why I sought out this thread - I finished listening to this set a couple of days ago. (I liked episodes 3 and 4 the best) But the Hounded episode annoyed me a little bit.
Why? Because: What do you think I might have listened to immediately prior to this box set? The December Short Trips episode: Black Dog. Both of them feature a spectral dog that somehow becomes real.
Okay, I like sci-fi a lot. I also like fantasy. But when I like sci-fi, I like it to lean on the side of "hard" sci-fi. I don't like it when fantasy elements creep in. (And yes, I do realize that time-travel itself is more fantasy than anything else, but if you set it some kind of framework with "rules" it works for me fine) And both of those stories, while decently written and well-performed, feature something I don't care for in science fiction: ghostly,then-come-alive-to-the-real-world creatures. If these were in a fantasy setting, I would not mind at all, but here, yes, I do mind. I have a hard time "buying" them...
But... at the end of the day, does that niggle on my part mean I hate either story? *sigh* No I don't think so. Louise did a very good job with her Short(ish) Trip, and here, the players do a damn good job. I still liked following the stories, even if I didn't like certain elements of either one. While I still will place both on my own ranking towards the bottoms of their respective series, but I still think they were decent to listen to.
-------
re: Kasran - I agree with some of the others that bringing him back here kind of cheapens the story line of one of the best Xmas Specials. Despite that - I thought he came off well in this story. In my mind, I thought this was the best one of the set.
-------
Overall - This was actually quite a bit better than I thought it might be. I wasn't sure what to expect, but what BF delivered was, for the most part, good fun to listen to. I do not regret the pre-order purchase. Oh, and the use of the Gold's themes... excellent indeed!

I finally got to the Kasran audio. He does seem pretty basic future companion. Spent the entire time imagining it was really Zoe speaking the lines, which made it kind of fun. Then I got to thinking what Jamie would be like in Roman invaded Britain.

First story in and the Companion Chronicles hybrid style is still one that takes some getting used to for me. That said, Phil Mulryne is a writer to keep an eye on and this story moves quickly and has a lot of good ideas that are well developed. Why have we lost writer's notes in most of the ranges featuring classic Doctors but all of the new series box sets have them?
