Well, this was fun! So much fun, that I actually started to re-listen right away. This was so much better that the previous release that just kind of fizzled out for me. Fantastic performances, great music and sound effects, nice mystery stories and I just absolutely adore all the quirky characters. And we do get a fantastic villain who is actually VERY threatening and clever and insideous. I really hope they do not weaken him down and have him beat in a let-down confrontation but keep him every bit as menacing and scary. And use a clever way of beating him. The story ends with a pretty nail-biting cliff-hanger, so I cannot wait for the next installment! This is a really good release and the most fun I had with BF in some time. One minor nitpick- as someone for whom the Pterodactyl is the favorite prehistory creature, I CRINGE and feel near physical pain if I hear Pterodactyls described as huge, carrying away people and coffers and being used as ancient attack squadrons. Please. That animal you are referring to is a Pteranodon.A Pterodactyl fits into your hand. A Pteranodon has a wingspan of up to 5 metres.
Dan Starkey, if you visit London again one of these days, maybe take a trip to the Natural History museum. Entrance is free. They have Pterosaurs there.
Or ask a 5 year old of your choice, they also know about these things.
And here it is, the Pterodactyl. This is my very own plaster copy of the Vienna specimen.
Not much of a scary attack squadron carrying people away, is it.

The Ghost and the Potato Man by Barnaby Kay:
The gang is back baby! I forgot how bloody marvellous it is to hear brand new Paternoster tales, and the opener from Barnaby Kay is a cracker. Strax becomes a stage delight, Jenny and Vastra have some very enjoyable capers capturing criminals, and the lovely and dearly missed Ellie Higson is back. The dialogue crackles, especially Strax’s, and I never found myself distracted during the runtime. Great stuff!

Oh, I totally forgot yesterday- what I LOVED most about this release was the Music Hall song of Strax and the Comedian. OMG, that was just perfect.

Symmetry of Death by Dan Starkey:
A solid tale of intrigue from Starkey, Symmetry of Death is bread and butter Paternoster Gang, in that it is incredibly enjoyable, but won’t set the world on fire. Starkey is one hell of a character writer, and so we get fun characters like the American Nachtnabel, and our regulars sparkle too. However, the plotting of the three interconnected mysteries felt a little messy, and this isn’t a negative, but having listened to the previous run(well 1/2 of it so far), Catrin Stewart’s voice seems to have deepened in the last couple of years. But like I said, a fun and enjoyable story which in todays world is never a bad thing.

I really enjoyed all three of these. I think the first one is my favourite, lots of good comedy moments. The third one I got a little confused by (which you'll understand when you hear it), but good ending. I'm looking forward to the next box set, one of my favourite recent spin offs from Big Finish, ripe for TV in my opinion!

Till Death Do Us Part by Lisa McMullin:
An excellent timey-wimey tale, with wonderful literary gags, excellent development for Jenny and Vastra and a very enticing cliffhanger. McMullin’s script can get a little all over the pace with its breakneck speed, but the sound design and music are helpful when introducing a switch in perspective. And 8 is a great presence throughout, and I would suspect that this isn’t his last appearance in the range.
So altogether, the return for the range is a roaring success. Two excellent episodes sandwich a very well-done middle romp, and I very much think this is one of the best opening sets for an arc in recent history.

Just finished it and was a bit shocked to not only hear a cliffhanger, but also to see that the next volume isn't due out until April 2024. 3rd volume due in October an 4th in May 2025. I wonder if each 3rd story will have a cliffhanger leading to the next volume. Overall, it has been a most enjoyable set.
