The great thing about Doctor Who is that it can constantly rewrite continuity and reinvent itself. I've been wondering as fans what is our line in the sand? What is essential and beyond tampering with?
For me;
The TARDIS must always be a police box, bigger on the inside.
The Doctor is an alien who regenerates at the point of death.
The shows past is loosely acknowledged, all the past Doctors and companions continue to have exhisted, no reset or reboots please.
The Doctors past, name and family before leaving Gallifrey is kept vague.
The Doctor remains non violent.
Show continues to be quintessentially British, by all means mix things up of occasionally but don't lose its quirky charm.

I meant the Doctor is a pacifist, aiming for non violent resolution to conflicts, violence is their absolute last resort. For me it's important that the Doctor hates guns, I love that our heroic lead character is always pointing out what awful things they are.

So whats essential for Who to me?
Never Cruel Never Cowardly
The TARDIS can go anywhere in space and time and is a blue box.
Once there Companions want to stay there.
Always try for the best possible outcome.
If we're talking story and product
TV and BF definitely Novels anthologies not essential and although I've got most of them definitely not Annuals and Comic Stipes.

I love the never cruel or cowardly line because it's what the Doctor strives to be, he often fails at this, the 12th Doctor ran when he encountered Davros as a child but he came back and showed mercy. "The Doctor always runs"

The “Doctor” (not their name , just what people call them because they refuse to reveal their name), built their ship, they’re from the future (possibly Earth, more likely a colony), they can ‘rejuvenate’ themselves but only with the help of the Ship, they have one heart. They’re potentially exiled from their home. The people on their homeworld have great and terrible powers but are concerned only with watching, never interfering.

Pet peeve: we're talking continuity and premise here, not canonicity.
Anyway, I'm with Moffat on this one. Doctor Who is about a madman with a magic box. Everything else is negotiable.

Fair point on continuity and canon, my bad. You know continuity is interesting, many of the areas of the show I've enjoyed for many years were once new revelations to viewers in the 60s and 70s. Definitely agree about the mad man in box quote. As long as the show doesn't stray too far away from that concept I'm happy. I have my preferences and tastes regarding some areas of continuity but the great thing about the show is that if you're not enjoying one week or even an era, the show will regenerate one way or another. I didn't enjoy the 13th Doctor or Chibnall's era but I'd never want it taken away from those that did, it just didn't appeal to my tastes regarding Doctor Who, I've a huge back catalogue I love and the show will appeal to me again, either with RTD or another show runner down the line. Not many shows can win you back after you've got off the train but Doctor Who is special in that way.

"There are some Corners of the Universe that hold the most terrible things they must be fought"
And if you kidnap a friend and turn their unborn child into a living weapon to try kill someone to prevent an ass kicking you deserve said ass kicking. And the Doctor should always be up front with most of the information.
They aren't a Mad person with a box their someone of strong conviction and a sense of what's Right and try to do the Best they can
"They Lie" is possibly the greatest smear on the character ever, the Timeless Child by comparison is a take or leave quirk

Can't say I'm too keen on the whole pre Hartnell Doctor thing, more the way it was executed than the fact it was done. In terms of the show, Hartnell will always be the First Doctor because to viewers of episode one in 1963 he was just that. I am not “a” doctor. I'm THE Doctor. The original, you might say…

One may as well go back to the end of The Tenth Planet & say Doctor Who is William Hartnell.

As the character developed I would argue any lies are from the Doctor's point of view for the greater good. I love the Doctor because they're flawed, they try to do the right thing and stand by their principles but ultimately they're more interesting because of their eccentricities. A perfect hero is quite a dull prospect.

I suppose I meant what I consider to be quintessential elements of what the show has become as of 2023, which I listed originally, so police box, bigger on the inside, regeneration, striving to be a pacifist, Britishness etc.
