Well that was a very enjoyable listen, roll on next mont and the next story.
I haven’t heard a lot of recent releases so the Monk and the UNIT team added wonderfully to the fun.
After Return of the Cybermen I wasn’t sold on Sadie Miller’s Sarah Jane, but this story has changed my opinion and I am now really looking forward to a Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith series of adventures.
Surely Big Finish have already recorded them? Which then got me wondering…Sarah obviously recognises the Monk. I cannot recall her meeting him before (or have I forgotten or missed something) so could he form part of that future past series as well?
And what about the monsters from this story. Again have we seen/heard their past encounter with the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane or is that something I can also look forward to?!
Finally if anyone is thinking about the Special Edition version over the Standard Edition I would say that the Howard Carter music suite is well worth the upgrade - I have listened to it twice already!

I enjoyed this overall, but at times I had the same issue I have with most of BF’s recasts. Especially if there’s more than one in a story, I can have difficulty figuring out which character is speaking at a given moment. On stage or screen, you’d have costume etc. to make it clear. On audio, I personally need the voice to be spot-on if I'm going to follow the story and not get lost in a sea of RP. They’ve got a few which really work for me, but none in this story. I think my favourite moment might’ve been at the beginning when Tom read the Big Finish slogan instead of Nick. That was a nice little surprise. I agree, I wasn’t sure about some of the other Doctor’s voices. But they were just cameos, so if they had more to say their character might have shown better. As it is there was at least one line of dialogue that I really am not sure which Doctor was speaking. But then perhaps with all the uncertainty over how many incarnations there has been that was on purpose!?

The Doctor, Sarah & Harry encountered the Monk in the (very good) Short Trip, How to Win Planets and Influence People, so that’s where the recognition come from.

The worrying thing is I have listened to that short trip, but clearly forgotten that Sarah was in it! Oh well bang goes that theory.

That seems a shoo-in for when they do Season 12/13 set audios.

I hoped on a relisten I would recognise the Doctors voices better, but I am still stumped by one of the lines.
At the start of the episode when the Doctor keeps changing. He is in the Tardis as the Third Doctor, but then we get the “Charles the second…” line. Who is that?

I didn't hate this release, but I also didn't like it as much as I wanted to. While I never thought I would say this, I thought the biggest disappointment was The Doctor and Tom's performance. Or maybe it was just how he was directed to play it. But the idea that he was the Doctor, but not HIS Doctor, and to play it as such doesn't work. He seemed aloof and uninterested in the others, even Sarah Jane. I guess it could be argued that this was more like the Season 18 Doctor, but even that doesn't work well for me.
Since the poll is only whether or not you liked the story, I'm going to give my rating here. It was a 3/5 for me, and that's only because I did enjoy Rufus Hound and the others.

Can we bring the rating polls back please? Appreciate that they were amended as a release was instantly getting 1/5 as soon as it was out, but replacing it with “yes” or “no” doesn’t replace it; it just stops others from being more accurate in their scoring.

Listened to this tonight and I'm afraid I found it disappointing. The premise was ok, but much of the plot failed to hold my interest, and there were lots of other negatives. "Mr Mallory" was a really intriguing character until he revealed who he was, and then he was just another wailing monster voice
. The Monk was fine, Osgood great, but Jemma Redgrave as Kate very flat in much of her early performance. Worst of all for me though was the characterisation of the Doctor. I know strictly he's not the Fourth Doctor , but hearing dialogue come out that just didn't sound remotely right for him (after the opening bit - he was fine then) jarred constantly. Tom Baker was doing the best he could with the script, but it just didn't work for me. I also had some problems differentiating the recast voices. The past Doctor ones threw me no end, especially what I assume might have been First and Second. Third I was fine with. Even Sadie Miller often didn't sound Sarah enough. And yup I wasn't happy with the Doctor leaving Sarah with the Monk at the end - seemed totally out of character for him, uncaring and unwise. As part of a wider arc the story will probably be good enough, but I just think this should have been so much better.

I found this to be a light-weight but fun adventure... nothing to write home about but enjoyable enough. Maybe it could have done with a longer running time to add more depth, but all in all, Past Lives is a good start to the proceedings...

Has anyone received their copy of Past Lives (special edition)? I wouldn't normally worry so soon, but mine doesn't appear to have even been dispatched (no dispatch email, and not listed as dispatched in my order history) which seems odd a week out from release when most CDs seem to be shipped same day as the download.

Haven't had it arrive or had an email yet, but the limited edition bundle in my order history does say "partially dispatched" now, so I wonder if it'll show up soon...

Not quite sure what to make of this. It is well performed, at least in my book, and everyone sounds enthusiastic. However, it feels too rushed and is a bit confusing. Could really have done with some more time. It is fine as some entertainment during a train journey..... however, it does not make the cut for my prime time listening. I won’t give up on the venture yet, and bought the bundle anyways. There is a chance the resolution might blow us away.....

Question: I am probably missing a release somewhere but when and how did Sarah Jane meet the Monk? They seem to know each other well.
