Okay started on this. Oh my. The first story is basically the whole team running backwards and forwards though some corridors, interrupted by some explosions and a couple of gunfights. That is it. This is okay for a train journey where you do not need to pay a lot of attention and where you have to kill some time. Otherwise, I am pretty unimpressed. I loved the framing device, but it was one of those stories where I think the concept and execution seems far cleverer on paper than it does to listen to. The output doesn't seem to warrant the effort that was made of it in Vortex.

And I finished this, Sad to say, but I do not see the point. Missy was good for a couple of laughs, but that was the only highlight for me. The rest was, like episode 1, basically just running around, escaping, being caught, escaping again....and this just did not work for me. I know, that is also the plot of classic stories like The Wargames ( 2nd Doctor), but oh my, that was done soooo much better. This series started so well, I loved all the tragic story about the Jaqui McGee, I cared about the characters and the story was exciting and engaging. The finale however.... as I said, what was the Point? Naomi and Harry were completely irrelevant. The villains were so pale and average, I am sure I will have forgotten all about them in 2 days time. And all that running around, back and forth.... Pretty average release all in all.

I’m in two minds about this set. I loved the framing device of One Way or Another, I enjoyed the Osgood focus in Traitor’s Gate, the time hopping in The Destiny Labyrinth and the revelations in True Nemesis. That’s each individual story, but I didn’t once feel it came together as a whole, which is why I’m in two minds. I don’t buy that the Vulpreen have conquered Earth, it’s just not realised in the scripts and never really elaborated on. Osgood discussing how easy a cleanup task it was in the closing seconds of True Nemesis emphasises that. I also don’t think we really get enough insight into the Vulpreen to really justify trying to portray the other perspective in Traitor’s Gate. And I can’t say I felt Missy’s presence throughout the set, any reference to her felt superfluous rather than imagery of her pulling the strings of events not only in Masters of Time but the preceding three sets. If I’d not listened to the behind the scenes of True Nemesis I’d have the belief it was never the original intention to have Missy be the titled Nemesis from the beginning. Each individual episode ticks all the right boxes for what I’d like out of UNIT, but as a finale to a long running arc it’s a bit of a damp squib. Especially given how strong the third set was, how the UNIT team came together and how the bigger story was slowly building up. I did smirk at Kate’s final lines about her missing Harry & Naomi, who barely had any presence and contributed even less! Hopefully a relisten to the four sets in succession will fare better, as I think the long waits between hasn’t helped. I agree with this - good entertaining episodes, but a sense of the enormity of what is happening just isn't quite there. Also, the absence of the Eleven felt a bit weird given his prominence in the previous 3 sets.

I hope they do something with Missy and Osgood given missy did kill one of the Osgood's. I thought the sequence with Missy being very surprised that Osgood was still around worked quite well. Switching from the 11 to Missy did seem a bit weird and I can't recall how they wrote him out and why Missy just jumped in. She stated her agenda at the end, but it seems she could have used her time better. All in all I thought there were some good bits here and there and I was carried along with the UNIT characters. Overall, though, it could have been better.
