DWM were *very* rude about this one. I think it's the first they've given anything an actual negative review in *very* long time

I don’t think the review was that rude. It was brief and lacked detail, but didn’t strike me as scathing. DWM have been middling or critical of much of Big Finish’s output for quite some time now. Their main review was for the upcoming Dimension Cannon set and said a lot without much in the way of praise.

What a great deal of fun this release was. And I think that's the point of the series, really, to have fun, the audience and the actors. But the plot thickens! The Master/Missy has been hit by a regeneration weapon as well! And now it's been spelled out clearly that the Doctor's clothes change with each degeneration. But more telling, the 10th Doctor has his 10th Doctor sonic! It's going to be interesting to see how all of this is explained. Doctor Who has such a rich tapestry, it's easy to forget that over the course of several episodes we can have episodes that are light, dark, funny, sad, scary, deep or arc heavy. Much as I grumble when I watch/listen to episodes not to my taste, I'd not have it any other way. I hope when I mention not enjoying episodes, it's doesn’t come across as too harsh because I think Big Finish are awesome, and the team more often than not produce wonderful work that continues to help me get through life. This year in particular has probably been the worst of my life, losing my Dad to cancer but having something to look forward to each month has really helped.

Yeah, the DWM review was fine. Short and snappy but not rude much less very rude. It's still an odd one. Is this the best so far? Yes. But it's mostly just because of the interaction of Tennant and Gomez who are clearly having a blast. The Paternosters are fine but a few Strax fun lines aside don't add much to affairs. Noonan is almost wasted as The Doctor since Jessamy's role vanishes almost as soon as Tennant regens in with the baton. Loved that Tennant's Doctor is overtly hostile to Missy even though she is "here to help". It emphasises, as I always said, that Missy's redemption arc was ALSO one for The Doctor to learn to trust his oldest friend again. Even towards the end..he's not overtly friendly, more would be passive-saviour! The War Of The Worlds stuff was fun. Loads of little Easter Eggs there from red weed to David Essex to Treolar quoting the opening line of the novel. So, seems The Union is to be at least the face of the antagonists who caused the degeneration effects and not just the title of the next set. Just tossed in there though, in a way you'd do EARLY in an arc. There's only that set then the Eccleston/Warner one. OK, there's the Coda next year..but if it's a Coda, then the story itself only has two left. Dropping the arc in SO late is baffling, as always with this range. Just odd. Kinda cute having Tennant do the opposite of his "I don't wanna go.." moments. Silly fun. As was Strax knowing Jodie - doesn't need to be expanded upon. Just a nice bit of "more stuff happens than you get to be party to..". In an age where pop culture is getting smaller, little bits like that which keep it growing offscreen are always welcome. But overall...it's a fun listen. The first I can say that about. Mostly due to the improv of Gomez and Tennant. Wonder if the Doctor calling her out for doing the Wells thing just for the sake of it is a self-referential commentary on the BF crossover deluge?

I empathise with you buddy, I lost my dad to Covid in 2021, couldn't visit cause lockdown & even if that wasn't the case I couldn't have gone as I was seriously ill with covid, I never fully recovered as there were things I never got to say. Trust me little things like audio dramas or movies/TV shows help get you through those bad days. Sending you big hugs buddy.

Trust me little things like audio dramas or movies/TV shows help get you through those bad days. Sending you big hugs buddy. Thanks for your message and big hugs, it means a lot. Sorry about your Dad and that you've never fully recovered. My Dad's terminal diagnosis came out of nowhere and he declined really rapidly. He was so ill in his remaining 3 months that you couldn't tell whether he'd understood what had been said. I told him I loved him and that he was a wonderful Dad but there's so much more I wanted to talk about with him. I don't think I'll ever fully recover from his loss and the way he went. But there are positives from the darkest moments, the immense love and gratitude I feel towards my Dad, is why his loss has hit me so hard, I also have become closer to my brother and sister because we've needed each others support. I also have a profound appreciation for all my loved ones, I didn't get the chance to say to my Dad how special he was to me, but I have made sure to say so to the other loved ones in my life. My greatest escape from life's heartache and darkness is Sci-Fi, reading and my favourite audio plays. A chance to step into a world of pure imagination is a wonderful gift. Sending big hugs too and wishing you plenty of awesome listening and tv/movie experiences. 😊

This is the most enjoyable one so far. There's an interesting, tangible mystery here, and the performances are mostly great. Michelle Gomez strikes her perfect balance between hilarity and dangerousness for Missy - often over-playing, but perfectly within the character ("I'd like to kill them all but, you know, who'd put the bins out?"). As ever David Tennant I find ever so slightly irritating - his over-playing comes across as just that; people love the 10th Doctor, so clearly I'm in the minority, but his incarnation (and that of the 11th) will never be a favourite of mine. I was very happy Stephen Noonan's Doctor had more than just a cameo; I've been a fan of his from the start and he always gives us an uncanny First incarnation. The dialogue is the highlight for me, especially that for Strax (his description of what I presume to be the 13 Doctor as "A cheery boy with yellow hair" had me laughing out loud. That's on a par with Terrance Dicks' 'pleasant, open face' for the Fifth Doctor). I liked the story - Jonathan Barnes has proven how clever he is at structuring these audios with his exemplary Sherlock Holmes work, and he provides typically good stuff here as well.
I'm surprised to hear DWM were rude about this one, I think it's the highlight of the series. What kind of things did they say?

Ironically what most of us thought about 2 Company that this was a random collection of characters meeting with no real story and seems to have missed the point of the Diary entries altogether. Regards mark687

My take on this tale is now up at CultBox - in short, a well-plotted story, a setting drawn from classic science fiction and some great performances. Best of the bunch so far?

I agree with everyone else- this is the best release in the series so far. It is fun. And I think Michelle Gomez is awesome in this and she is easily my favorite here. Otherwise, there is not too much substance and there are just way too many known characters involved and none of them get too much time to breathe. Still, fun and light entertainment.
