The War Master is such a consistent range. Every single set 4/5 or 5/5 for me.
Derek Jacobi can do no wrong, long may he continue to perform.

Ah, Big Finish’s attempts at American accents. Oh, how I have missed you.

Ah, Big Finish’s attempts at American accents. Oh, how I have missed you. One dreads what they will be mangling in the German language next.... honestly, not having much patience for stuff like this at the moment. There are actors out there looking for work. Hire them. And stop tormenting our ears.
EDIT- and no, "I just hire Dave and Billy from next door because we are great buddies" does not count....

Ah, Big Finish’s attempts at American accents. Oh, how I have missed you. I don't mind the accents when there voiced by characters from an alien or futuristic world but when it's contemporary or historic Earth it's rather distracting. I could understand if the nature of fast and cheap production makes finding American, European, etc performers hard to source. I have no knowledge of the industry but there must be plenty of UK based performances available to record.

Looking fwd to this one!. In the trailer Yana's voice differs from War Master. How does Derek do that? Considering Yana was last performed on TV long time ago. What an actor.

Another Excellent set. Worth it just for The Sublime Porte, Murray Melvin came to play RIP again to you Sir. 3 of the stories give Sir Derek the opportunity to really showcase the shades of the character. the "Self Analysis" in Alone is equal parts insightful and chilling. Regards mark687

Yep, this is easily the best War Master set since Master of Callous.
The Sublime Porte was everything I wanted and more. Seeing Bilis Manger from the perspective of someone who might have a slight chance of understanding what he is, and the War Master finally on the back foot. Derek Jacobi and Murray Melvin are electric together. Superb stuff!

I really liked this set but that Yana story in particular was pretty fab. Coulda been very gimmicky but like the very first boxset of the War Master, it's more just "something cool from his timeline" - in this case a prequel to Utopia that really asks just HOW much of The Master was able to bleed through to Yana after all. Maybe the fob watch with him wasn't quite as black and white as the one we saw with The Doctor and Yana had some thoughts and actions that weren't as pure as even he thought.
Leaves all that ambiguous though, which is nice. Jacobi's voice is showing age now, of course, but he's still very able to channel the kindly professor versus the wicked Timelord with ease. He's normally quite charming even as The Master but cleverly in the small moments we get of the "trapped" Master psyche Derek plays him much more OTT and maniacal, with a real fury. Makes the contrast stand far better than if it was just "real charm" vs "snakey charm" as he often exhibits.

I’m three stories in and enjoying this set.
Runtime and Manhunt are your standard War Master fare. Stories built around the Master insinuating his way into a situation and then twists into something much different. Jacobi delivers, and it’s a good time.
The Sublime Porte is a much different experience. Bilis scares the absolute crap out of the Master from the word go, which is a really effective way of conveying what a different level Bilis is on. You kind of wonder if Bilis’ previous victims got away lightly from their ignorance, whereas the Master has more of inkling of what he is and what he could do. The story settles down in the latter half as we get tantalising scenes of the two talking, and that is performed wonderfully. In a word, sublime.

Alone is a sweet and tragic expansion on Yana. Jacobi plays him very nicely, and the glimpses of the Master’s persona in the watch serve well in highlighting the contrast.

Sitting at home while nursing a cold (sick leave from work). Started on this. The Master is his usual delicious evil self.
Runtime- we had similar stories before. The Master is making quite an effort to save a world (and one of the few survivors), but of course he has his own nefarious agenda. No surprises there.
Manhunt- X-files style alien abduction story, complete with little grey men and mysterious Men in Black (or is it the FBI, after all?). All this with an added Master-twist. I thought this was quite original, even of the ending is the usual tragic evil abuse the Master always pulls. It is his typical modus operanti after all.
All of this of course performed wonderfully.
