Stan Lee's Amazing Fantastic Incredible - A Marvelous Memoir. It's everything the title promises and more. I was up late trying to finish it because I just couldn't put it down once I started it. Absolutely delightful!

My monthly box of comics arrived yesterday and the first thing I read was Guardians of the Galaxy no.4. Donny Cates is the new DnA of the cosmic side of the MU and this is another strong issue that moves the hunt for Gamora forward. Quill does something rash, foolish and noble which makes for a good cliffhanger.

Just caught up on last week's Star Wars comics. Man, the 'main range' under Kieron Gillen's stewardship has been spectacular. I'm sad it's ending, but it's been a hell of a good ride.

Over recent years I've become bored/fed up with Marvel and DCs constant rebooting and crossovers and with a weariness, due to overdose, of super heroes the only comic I buy now is Commando.

Green Lantern: Rebirth
The current run of Green Lantern has one issue per month.
In some ways, this approach is better than the past few years, when there were umpteen titles and bimonthly releases. The result was an oversaturated market and stories spread too thin with little or no depth.
But I'm left wanting more, so I'm going back through the Geoff Johns era, beginning with Rebirth.

Just finished the Glorious Dead. Well, that was much better than I expected, some very nice stories and decent art. I had expected a much more "kids-friendly" comic, but this also makes good adult entertainment, so I am happy. I am not really into Izzy as companion, but otherwise, it was a good effort. And the big showdown between the Doctor and the Master was well done (even if it has been, I think, redconned by now). Since I got the following two issues (Oblivion and Flood) at the convention, I can continue the story, this time in glorious colour. From what I gleaned by flipping through the pages beforehand, this will be a great emotional journey, with intrique, betrayal and lots of drama. I think I am going to like it.

I found that Izzy didn’t really click with me until Oblivion, probably because that’s when pretty much all of her character development kicks in. Even still, I kinda prefer Fey and Destrii. Speakimg of DWM, I just finished The Crimson Hand. I enjoyed Majenta as a companion but felt like she could have easily been substituted for Donna at times. Really she just didn’t get long enough to grow. Like her story arc is all about her redemption and beginning to see things through the Doctor’s Eyes, but it feels like they skip through certain beats in that arc in a similar way to what has happened so far with the Mags trilogy.

Just started on the 8th Doctor Oblivion collection. Wow, I like the colours, the art is really great! Artwork wise, I think I like the drawings and colours of Uroboros best. Yes, the Doctor does not look really life-like, but these are bold strokes and strong colours, conveying the emotions wonderfully, like an expressionist painting (it reminds me a bit of the Tiger by Franz Marc, one of my favorite ever paintings). Yes, it is not very life-like, but it transports the raw essence and emotion perfectly. And this is a story that has the Doctor very angry most of the time.
Writing wise, I really enjoy the darker tone of the stories.
These comics are not what I had expected. The reason why I kept away from them for such a long time was, that I thought the stories were just kiddy friendly light entertainment. Yes, there are stories like that in there, however, the ongoing plot is something that would also not be out of place in Big Finish. I am glad I took the plunge and got these comics. And I can justify it money wise as a good investment, because I enjoy myself reading these.

I had exactly the same preconceptions when first starting out, I was delighted to be proved wrong. Youth (a word never to be said unironically) are largely indecipherable to adults, but the mistake I think adults make is "indecipherable = stupid" and try to cater accordingly. Youngers can sense that belittlement precisely because they're not fools. They just have their own frame of reference. A different language, if you like, and they enjoy being treated as equals. Adults. So, this sort of stuff -- the grotesque and the passionate -- appeals immensely and happily the DWM comics never strayed too far from that impulse for complex storytelling.

Still haven't read many comics even for the freebies out there at Marvel or Comixology, but I continue to discover things I think are interesting. I never knew until just recently that some of the last issues of Marvel Premiere were devoted to the Fourth Doctor. If I'd known at the time it probably would have radically changed the way I rigidly think of Doctor Who as a TV show.
Very pleased to discover Comic Book Plus and the Digital Comic Museum with legal downloads due to expired or invalid copyrights of the material, that's a lot of free vintage comics. I was very surprised that DC didn't acquire the rights to some of this material along with those to the numerous characters involved but maybe the rights to the comics themselves had already been lost and couldn't be transferred?
The other day I was toying around with the idea of a motif index for comic books the way there are motif indexes for folklore and mythology, one doesn't have to look at many vintage DC titles for their biggest characters to spot some obvious tropes (I think I prefer "motifs" to "tropes"). I'm surprised that I haven't found that one already exists. "Pa Kent gains superpowers" could have its own separate entry. :-)

Continuing with the 8th Doctor comics and started on the last collection (Flood). I just wanted to say- I REALLY fell in love with Destrii. What a delicious ambiguous character. I really wish that one day, maybe, BF gets around to adapting these stories.

Should be someone younger sounding but who can do mean and aggressive really well. Suggestions?

Reading back through Mark Waid and Chris Samnee's run on Daredevil, which is magnificent fun. I've followed these two from book to book for years both on their own and in collaboration, and when they tackled DD it did not disappoint even with my high expectations. I met Samnee several years ago at a convention in a quite backwards way where I didn't actually know who he was until the end of the conversation when he gave me a paperback of Queen and Country, and then I realized who I'd been talking with for the last forty-five minutes about our favorite comics. Very cool guy who is very unassuming and down to earth.

Ohhh, it's on the tip of my brain. Angel Coulby, maybe? Except a bit more... Not pushy, but push ing. Daring. Defiant. A "I'm gonna do it cause you told me not to" sort of companion. An endearing troublemaker. She's used to causing a disturbance, a potentially lethal disturbance, and being able to roll with that. She's also deceptively credulous, in some respects. She has a lot of experience of how life on Oblivion worked, but not so much in the rest of the universe. Has a genuine heart that shows itself at the moment of tragedy, not before. Bit intense. Kinda like a blend between some of the more serious stuff from Claudia Black and/or Ashly Burch.

Silver Surfer: Black by Donny Cates & Tradd Moore. Fantastic stuff. Maybe the beautiful looking book I've seen this year.
