Eldrad Must Live! Cutaway Comic's spin-off from The Hand of Fear. A fun entertaining story with an old 70s feel.

The Maurauders Volume 1+2: I’ve a soft spot for Kate (nee Kitty) Pride since the days of eXcalibur. I like Emma in the sort of small doses you get with her as an arch-manipulator. I like Storm being shown the respect she deserves as an Omega-class mutant. I like stories that revolve around being being cunning. I enjoyed this series, even though I dislike the arrogance the Krokoa-era mutants all evidence and Kate being a harder, less optimistic character.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

The deluxe edition of Harry Harrison’s The Stainless Steel Rat as serialised in 2000AD way back in the day. This edition has some extra colour pages and looks amazing!

Just read an odd little miniseries from a couple of years ago called Strange Skies Over East Berlin. It was the compelling title that caught my attention, to be totally honest. I just finished so I'm still processing, but I liked it? It didn't blow me away, but I did find things fascinating about it, and there are still some things I'm chewing on, so that's a good sign.

The Sandman: Fables and Reflections
Bliss, re-reading this. We've stories in the Middle East, revolutionary France, across the Silk Road and in Rome. As it's all about the echoes of dreams and how fables are essentially stories reverberatiing down the web of history... It's curious to see some of the parallels with stories told elsewhere. Similar, but different. August, for instance, is not entirely dissevered from the themes (and even eventual fate, at times) of I, Claudius. Thermidor and Lady Joanna Constantine's negotiations with the wards of Madame Guillotine are a favourite.

Catwoman: Lonely City #1. Very good, if you enjoy stories like The Dark Knight Returns this is for you.

The latest "The Orville" comic. I really really really like these Orville comics. They have the same interesting way of stoytelling like the TV episodes do, and they just feel like TV episodes. And these stories are good! I really enjoyed this one and cannot wait for the conclusion. Yes, the trope of the ancient hidden alien fleet is pretty old (and a stable in EVERY space 4X strategy game I have ever played). But I enjoyed this version, and I also enjoyed the interaction of the characters, especially Mercer full of admiration for his former teacher and Malloy being very suspicious. Totally recommend the Orville comics.

So I’ve not ever read comics before but I suggested to a friend of mine to start a podcast covering comics since he’s a massive comics fan. We started with three Batman comics, The Long Halloween, The Killing Joke, and Year One
I adored both Long Halloween and Killing Joke for what they do to explore the characters and the former just having such a good mystery. Year One was good, but a massive step down from the other two, mainly because it felt less like a single story than a bunch of little vignettes that don’t quite tie together as well as they could have been. And Frank Miller’s treating of all the female characters is just awful.

OMG OMG OMG There is a new volume of Blacksad out!!!!! How awesome is that. I LOVE Blacksad. The art is absolutely stunning. One just has to get over the fact that the writing is left. Pretty much Big Finish level of left. Otherwise, some great noir detective stories.
Plus, the new Titan Doctor Who story has started, too. So far, they have done a very good job. Always very enjoyable.
In other news, I now got the latest Marvel Warhammer comics. I am curious if they can hold up to my high standards concerning good Warhammer stories. Plus, I am not a big fan of Papa Smurf (Marneus Calgar) neither from the lore nor from facing him on the tabletop, this is why I held back so long getting this. But alas, smurfs is what we are given, so I have to roll with it. Since I play Chaos, I take note which ones of them will make the best trophies on my armor trophy racks.

Woman as victim, no agency, nothing more than a plot point for the male characters.

Moore at least acknowledges what he did to Barbara as wrong and of course they eventually make something great out of her with Oracle while Miller’s female characters are literally just sex objects. Like even in killing joke you couldn’t replace Barbara with a sexy lamp, there’s still character there, in Year One all the female characters could be sexy lamps and nothing would change.

The new Who comic is a bit confusing. But the art is quite good, in the same style as the previous releases, so no complaints from me. I think the story needs a few releases to come together.
But the new Blacksad comic? OMG. Wow. Drop dead gorgeous. The art is stunning. The pacing perfect. The characters believable. The writing is gripping. I cannot wait for the next release, I cannot wait to see how this will end. After THAT cliffhanger!

“The Thirteenth Floor”
So glad Rebellion finally got around to reprinting this and other classic British comics of yesteryear. Never outstays it’s welcome and “Max” (the well meaning but ultimately psychotic computer custodian of Maxwell Towers) is easily one of my favourite characters ever.

I've been reading through The Death and Return of Superman (also read The Court/City of Owls from the New 52 and The Dark Knight Returns) so I'll post some brief thoughts here as well as links to the full podcast episodes on YouTube (and general podcast links at the end on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Anchor). Batman: The Court/City of Owls: A lot of people have issues with the New 52 and I'm sure as I read more of that era I'll see more where they're coming from (some of it kind of is apparent here with the idea that Batman's been active for six years and has managed to have gone through Dick Grayson, Jason Todd (both his death and resurrection), Tim Drake, and Damian Wayne). Other than that, this is utterly brilliant, it's my favorite Batman story of the 5 Batman stories I've read. I love the conspiracy behind the Court and how it eventually all plays out and builds in the second half (and fully agree that issue 12 is necessary for the arc to work to its fullest effect). Full episode thoughts here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYehbq5DV78&t=41sBatman: The Dark Knight Returns: This is touted as a classic and often the best Batman comic ever and honestly, I think it's overrated. There's a lot here that hasn't aged great and some flashes of what Frank Miller will become (especially with how it ends), but it's tempered with a genuinely brilliant first half, a really interesting version of Robin with Carrie Kelly, and a fascinating format. Joey and I also have a conspiracy that it's this comic that caused A Death in the Family to happen the way that it did (and is kind of where in the podcast where Jason Todd's death becomes a recurring thing despite the fact that I haven't yet read A Death in the Family). www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pfgOx_bSHw&t=20sThe Death of Superman: Quite good, but not a complete story. There's a lot of heart here and despite being inspired by and inspiring a lot of gritty 1990s style stories, some of the poor tropes are genuinely avoided here. It's only let down by some very slow moments and some of the plot being a bit too thin. www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0QypnWp0cI&t=12sSuperman: Funeral for a Friend: Bookended by brilliance but a middle that stops the plot dead or just isn't very interesting. Could have been bad had it not ended so great and the Funeral itself both being a brilliant deconstruction of who Superman is and what he means. Lois and Ma and Pa Kent especially shine throughout, continuing the trend of avoiding a lot of the 1990s edge that it easily could have fallen into (something that as I get older I seem to tolerate less and less). www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ESb6OWJ874&t=2sGeneral Podcast Links: Spotify: open.spotify.com/show/3ZS9YXBwtte49TywJbzEqPApple Podcasts: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fresh-faced-comics/id1597871165Google Podcasts: podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy83M2JhMGFjYy9wb2RjYXN0L3JzcwAnchor: anchor.fm/blood-donut-studios

Superman: Reign of the Supermen: This was honestly a lot of fun in reflecting what it’s like when Superman isn’t there. There isn’t the problem of Funeral for a Friend where things don’t just stop, but there’s an exploration of each of the characters and how they’re coping and the four new Supermen all have something interesting about them. youtu.be/MipC5kLwqIE
