Archie #1-#6
It's Archie but NOT the Archie you may remember. Mark Waid - the maestro of Daredevil and the current Star Wars line RandomJC and I love so much - is writing this. It's not cheesy, it's not cookie-cutter - it's vibrant, contemporary and fun. It's so good. Seriously good.

Anyone reading the Warren Ellis written James Bond comic? Yeah, I'm on #4. It took a wee while to hit its stride but the third issue, and this one as the aftermath are incredibly brutal, tense thrillers. Bond is still a bit quippier than Fleming's but he's very much deadly and serious. There's a massacre in an embassy in one of the issues that is almost a Tarantino like bloodbath but it's not gratuitous for the sake of it, it really does feel legit.

Back To The Future #1-#5
One of the best of IDW's licence based books. If you're a fan of the films you really, really need this in your life. It's Doc Brown.from various alternate timelines, regailing Jules and Verne, his sons with Clara, about tales of his adventures. It's as wibbly-wobbly as Moffat's Who. The best issue so far is #2. The Doc is approached by the government in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis to develop a time machine for military use. When he considers saying yes, he gets a visit from a familiar DeLorean...it's Marty McFly from an alternate 1985. And....he's speaking Russian! Wonderful, optimistic stuff that I think many forumers would lap up.
Oh, and it's writen by BOB GALE who wrote the original film!

Jughead #1-4 This spinoff of Archie is, somehow, even better than it's parent book. I've never identified with a character so much, so quickly as I do do Jughead Jones. He's pretty much the way I was at his age. Unambitious, disinterested and only interested in pop culture. Hell, I've not changed that much! There's an ongoing arc about the new principal at Riverdale High having it in for Juggie as he hates his sarcasm. Each issue features a middle third that pastiches something. #1 for example had a Game Of Thrones section where dragons dish out infinite hamburgers. It's wonderful, wonderful stuff. I'm so hooked. It's easy to think every renumbering is a con but this is the first time Archie and Jughead have rebooted since the 40s so I think it's OK. I think a few members here would really love Archie 1-6 and Jughead 1-4. Michael Hocking and JBMasta spring to mind. It's optimistic, breezy fun that can brighten your day. Easy to forget how important that is in an age where brooding and dark are the buzzwords in comics/

Wynona Earp #1 from IDW.
So, I'm a big Tombstone/Earp/Holiday/Clanton buff - the Tombstone legends always excite me so when I heard this new series was about a descendant of Wyatt's who fights monsters as a Marshall...I was sold already. Honestly, it's pretty by the numbers stuff about cathching an in Earp's case killing the creatures. She's a tough bitch who worries that she's become desentivised to the violence and death. The whole issue I'm thinking...this sounds like the kind of show TV would bite your hand off for.
THen, I get to the end pages, the comic finishes and the creator writes a few pages of text from the set of Wynnona Earp, the TV series - to air on SyFy this year! I had no idea this book was actually around in the 90s and it's been revived now to promote the series and hopefully sustain itself. Pretty cool.
I don't think I'll keep this on my pull if the quality doesn't improve - there's nothing wrong but it's all been done before.

Twilight Zone 1959 #1
I'm a big TZ fan so I had high hopes but this one shot was poor. It's got 3 short stories; one about an abusive boss, one about a couple of kids bullying a smaller boy and a more meta one that parodies the birth of the comics code in the 50s.
The problem is the message is the same in all 3 - that the wicked will be punished. The Twilight Zone was rarely that black and white. You didn't need to be "bad" to suffer. It could be hubris, or you may get a second chance. Sometimes it wasn't a dark ending or a dark story at all. Just whimsical. Not here.
Can't recommend this one despite some lovely art in the second story. Oh, and the Rod Serling-esque narration is spot on.

Green Lantern #50. Fascinating what happens to Hal. No spoilers, but needless to say it's a definite game changer. Not quite the big battle with Parallax that was expected, and a slight letdown considering the past few issues have been teasing the Renegade Hal and Parallax Hal showdown. The cover isn't as good as it could have been (it looks like the Reynolds Hal Jordan from the 2011 movie on the cover and Renegade Hal comes off a bit Doctor Doom-y). Just a note, but the cover for #52, aka the final issue before Rebirth is clearly a placeholder title, as there's a page in here about halfway through that looks exactly like that cover, only with Parallax not silhouetted. The end of the issue makes me wonder if #51 is a placeholder too, and how much will be dealing with the fallout of #50 and how much will deal with the Grey Agents arc. If you really want to know what happens to Hal: {Spoiler} He uses the full power of Krona's Gauntlet to fight Parallax and becomes a giant living construct. Parallax flees and Hal fights to restore his regular form, only it doesn't seem to stick. It appears he's found the true cost of using the Gauntlet, and it certainly doesn't fail to impress.

Also got Omega Men #9 today. This is pretty much where it was all leading to, when the you-know-what hit the fan and Kyle's optimism is up against both the ruthlessness of the Citadel and the extremism of the remaining Omega Men. It's actually the first time Kyle has managed to do what he intended to achieve when he first entered the Vega System, only now he knows all the facts. Probably my favorite relationship in the whole run so far is between Scrapps and Doc. The bulk of the emotional stuff comes in issue #8 but is carried on here, making the opening pages very emotionally charged. I'll need to read it again, but the cliffhanger is very impressive.

Anyone else thinks its a bit much that DC are essentially rebooting again so soon after New 52? No, they're rectifying mistakes that 52 made which I think is admirable. It takes a lot of guts to say "we dropped the ball" and while they're adamant New 52 was always supposed to be short-term...I don't believe it. Besides - Rucka on Wonder Woman alone is worth it for me Some of these books were surprises, like Red Hood And The Outlaws as they were low sellers already. I don't see them running long on that, Deathstroke or Blue Beetle. I'm sad to see Snyder leave the main Batbooks but intrigued that he's getting "All-Star". Anyone who's read Miller's "All-Star Batman and Robin" can attest to how completely insane that was so I'll be checking that out to see what Snyder does with the title. Some fascinating Superman related titles are coming and having watched the full 2 hour presentation of the launch of all of these, some are sounding terrific with vivid, imaginative premises. My concern when we heard what titles were coming was that they seemed far too influenced by the films and tv shows currently on or on the slates. Having seen Jim Lee speak on this, I'm not worried about that now. He spoke passionately about THIS stuff being the source material for film and tv, not the other way round. Anyone reading Marvel right now must surely agree the books are massively influenced by the MCU. It's actually quite jarring. Daredevil is the exception. I honestly think that book is a miracle - it goes from great run to great run regardless of who is on it and has done for years. Also loving Silver Surfer's latest ongoing

I get what you mean. Its just that sometimes i get sick of the constant rebooting of the universe and the now Yearly big event. when there should be some gaps at least

Glad to hear that the quality continues could I ask a question, where do all the side ranges like Vader down, shattered empire, leia, etc fit in. Not sure if/what to get or if they tie into main range etc
