I don't know why, but this was a rare miss for me. While I really liked Shaun Parkes, I felt that the story itself was not great. The characters felt like they were out of a bad comic book. Nothing seemed believable for me in this. Torchwood is usually a solid bet for me. Oh, well.

I think this story lost me towards in last few minutes when it piling on the last minute twists to give Torchwood a win. But until that point I was enjoyed the ride.
One minor gripe though, why doesn’t this future era get a variant of the theme tune? Just feels odd it’s getting the usual fanfare when historical time periods get variants.

This was okay. Not bad or anything, but also not thrilling and I pretty much knew how this was going to go as soon as I met the major players. However, the performances are great, especially the Ood are fantastic.

Great murder mystery that’s let down in its closing minutes with a convoluted ending that diminishes what came before. The mavitational line was a nice nod to Wild Blue Yonder.

I would love to know the behind-the-scenes story behind that mavity reference. Since the creation of Wild Blue Yonder was so notoriously secretive, I think it’s rather wonderful they could hide this foreshadowing for nearly a month in plain, er, sound.
Was it a quiet tip-off (“you might want to throw this in; I’ll explain later”) or something more organised? Was the word recorded back in 2022, or cheekily spliced together in post? Is it a cute one-off, or the start of Big Finish’s Mavity Era? Has the BBC/Bad Wolf encouraged - or even required - expanded media to use the word moving forward? (In which case, I’d love to see that bonkers memo.) Why am I so invested in this zero-stakes mystery?
To read even more excessively into it: I’ve been curious as to whether RTD/Handcock would keep Big Finish more in the loop around new series events this time around. This feels like a good sign.

James Goss wrote the Target for The Giggle. RTD has mentioned that the writers have had access to material beyond what we get on screen - meaning they incorporate deleted scenes, original draft ideas, etc. - so it doesn’t seem unfeasible he had access to The Star Beast & Wild Blue Yonder scripts too.

Thanks for the answer. Silly of me to miss the most obvious explanation in my rampant speculation!

Thanks for the answer. Silly of me to miss the most obvious explanation in my rampant speculation! No worries. I don’t think your speculation was rampant, it was a nice little connection and wouldn’t be unrealistic to think Bad Wolf / BBC Studios may give a few nods here and there. Especially with the build up of the Whoniverse and RTD & Handcock both having affiliations with Big Finish and its creatives.

I had to listen to the mavitaional line twice to make sure I heard it. That was a nice touch. I thought it was a solid mystery. There are a lot of parallels between the Ood in this story and some of Asimov's 3 Laws robotics stories - a similar logical puzzle to unwind. They are still creepy when they say "We are coming for you."
And I am glad I watched The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit again for the first time in many years before listening to this. The story would not have worked as well with just a dim memory of those events.

Thanks for the answer. Silly of me to miss the most obvious explanation in my rampant speculation! Thought this might interest you - The Power of 3 podcast, hosted by Big Finish’s own Kenny Smith, has done an episode covering the Target of The Giggle. In it he interviews James Goss who mentions he was permitted to see all three of the 60th anniversary episodes in December 2022 ahead of writing the novel, so he’ll have been in on mavity from there. It was so secretive they had Gary Russell leave after The Star Beast had finished before going into Wild Blue Yonder!
