I always liked C’rizz, I think one of his biggest issues was that his key stories - his first and last - are utterly terrible. I quite like him being a dry, sarcastic foil to Charley’s bubbly enthusiasm. Wasn’t expecting him to return, though. I’m midway through an Eighth Doctor run at the moment and was thinking just the other day that it’s interesting we’ll never hear from him again, while other companions get revisited all the time (also Erimem).

Due out this Wednesday (10th January) Regards mark687 'Excellent news! I shall clear my schedule to ensure uninterrupted listening time. If necessary, using thermal cannons and pulse lasers.' 'Couldn't you just rub out the pencil marks?' 'A sound tactical suggestion Miss Jenny. It would save valuable time on redecorating duties.'
(I couldn't resist introducing a spot of Strax, but I'm definitely expecting the Linx/Styre type of Sontarans to show up in Ireland. )

I wonder why they still haven't confirmed who's doing the sound design/music for this on the BF website?

Strong start
Good story in its own right and intriguing mystery for the Arc
Though brief there's actually a good straightforward why they are how they are explanations for both C'rizz and the Sontarans

These days I find myself fully invested in the Eighth Doctor, and it's always good to experience a chronic hysteresis. At first I thought there was a fault with my download - but no; just Lizzie Hopley being typically tricksy and brilliant. She's a favourite writer of mine, and she begins this tale not in the way I would expect. The backstory is set up tantalisingly before The TARDIS arrives, and the setting is pleasingly visual.
As soon as this project was announced, I was excited for it. I've been bitten by a few recents BF releases, and it's put me off pre-ordering. Still did it with this one though. I had a lot of expectation for it - possibly an unreasonable amount - but it doesn't disappoint. Happily, any worries about this being a Strax-influenced comedy are immediately put to one side (no offence, Strax). This is proper, intriguing Doctor Who, featuring curiously compelling characters and a nice return for C'Rizz, which is something I wasn't expecting. He's great here; in fact he, The Doctor and Charley are as good as ever . Welcome back, Conrad.
The Sontarans are used very originally here, and Dan Starkey is brilliant (as is John Banks). He's adept at comedy and drama, and the potato-headed menaces are brutal and ruthless in this one ("Wrong in every way, but fascinating!"), although still confused about gender (perhaps a bit more restraint on that front would have been nice)! Their current predicament allows us to laugh at them a little, but it's a dangerous and intriguing development; possibly the story's most poignent moment is the tragedy of the Sontaran's eternal conflict and their addiction to it.
An excellent story and a big sigh of relief after some dodgy Big Finish releases. A sign of how much I enjoyed a story is how keen I am on hearing it again. This'll be blasting out of my speakers again tomorrow.

I just finished this first story in this set and I loved it! I thought it was a solid early Eighth Doctor story. I haven't missed this particular Tardis team since I have never been a huge fan of C'Rizz, but I have to say it was lovely hearing them again. It actually felt like I was listening to a Monthly Range story, and that was a treat in itself.
I agree that it was a great use of the Sontarans. I enjoyed the more serious and dangerous Sontarans with a little mix of humor, but not anywhere near Strax level. It's a good mix and fits the story well. Looking forward to future stories in this series very much.

Delighted to see the strong responses here! The replies above, combined with the damn-near-assured quality of Dorney and Foley scripts to come, swiftly pushed me into a purchase.
My problems with the price hike stand (and sadly the extra cost here — now triple what an equivalent box set download would have cost in Australian dollars in 2022 — means passing on at least one other Big Finish set) but I’m looking forward to the monthly watercooler discussion.

So this was definitely going to be a boxset originally; it leaves way too many loose ends to reasonably be called standalone. Actually come to think of it, it actually has more loose ends than Peladon’s first story did.
It was a very entertaining spin on Sontarans and Rutans, and C’rizz complemented events nicely. Westmass seemed to step back into the role with ease, and honestly I wouldn’t mind more dabbling into his character if he’s willing and Big Finish have ideas. I did think the Doctor seemed oddly uncaring towards Rutans given the information he’d had at the point he reunited with C’rizz, given how much he was willing to hear the Sontarans out.
I’m onboard for seeing how this miniseries develops.

I thought this one was very good. One of C'rizz's best entries with Other Lives. It was as if I was listening to an episode of the Main Range. I, too, wouldn't be against some new episodes with C'rizz now that the actor has come back.
Clever use of the Sontarans as well, I can't wait to listen to the next episode. And I also can't wait for the Six and Charley episode.
Here's to hoping this will be as great as the Peladon box set.
