@ number13 Looks like your prediction came true! 'Monty James'! Yes, it does, that was his name to his college friends - and the story he's in is called 'Lost Hearts'!!
For anyone who isn't quite such a big M.R.James fan , 'Lost Hearts' is also the title of one of James' ghost stories - one of the most gruesome and darkest, so dark in fact that it's said he wondered whether to publish it. It was published of course and eventually became famous all over again thanks to the now-legendary 1970s 'Ghost Story for Christmas' BBC TV adaptation.
Presumably this Eighth Doctor story will lean on some of the elements of the James story - but whatever happens it can't be made into his inspiration for writing the famous tale, because it was only his second published ghost story, in 1895, well before the 1903 date we've been given for the setting of this 'Lost Hearts'. (Published again as part of his first collection 'Ghost Stories of an Antiquary' in 1904. Maybe that's what his meeting with the Doctor inspires.)
I'm looking forward to this one with more than the usual interest!

Not watching any tweet about 'Echoes', not listening to any trailer about 'Echoes'...
*sticks fingers in ears, shuts eyes, avoids all and any possible mini-spoilers*
(No pressure BF but after the expectation build-up I'm trying to do, your story with M.R.James had better a) really be him and b) really be good! )

Now that's more like the 'Doctor Who' I want!
It'll be a while before I can give this set the attention it deserves (the backlog is growing again!) so I'll have to go on avoiding spoilers for a bit longer.

Birdsong is 5/5, another Tim Foley masterpiece for me. The small cast keep things intimate, with some nice interactions between Liv and Helen, further adding depth to Helen's background. Big Finish have really upped their game with Helen in recent years, allowing her to grow as a character whose proven herself an intelligent and kind hearted asset to team Tardis.
The story has an intriguing mystery with an unsettling and creepy ending.
The dynamic between the three leads is excellent as always. I'm looking forward to the next adventure with high hopes of another smashing 8, Liv and Helen set.

Lost Hearts 4/5
Not the story I was expecting but entertaining none the less. The leads are great once again, as is the guest cast.
My only gripes would be the story could have used a little more time to explore the antagonist and their plans execution.
I'd of also liked more time exploring Helen and her grandfather.
But still an interesting concept and the depiction of the era's attitude to class and women made me angry in the way all good drama should.

Birdsong was a strong 4/5. Haven’t kept up with the 8DAs in recent years (except for last years sets) so was afraid I’d be a little lost with the characters but not at all. Helen was a great companion and I loved the whole TARDIS crew interaction. The story was spooky and not entirely surprising but well handled all the way through. Great use of one hour format too.
