Hey everyone,
While the quality of performers has always been excellent, I can't but help but feel the need for a second actor in many a Companion Chronicle has felt more then unneccessary. Why not simply let the actor tell the story?

It made more sense when there was a framing story that explained why the companion was recounting the story. When the stories stopped using the framing sequence it became more of having another voice in the cast. There are some stories where the second voice doesn't add anything significant to the story.

The rather dull answer? It depends Solitaire, The Scorchies, The Mahogany Murders and others would suffer for losing an actor while other stories, like some of the best historical don't need a second reader.

The Glorious Revolution certainly benefits from the second reader, and it makes for a wholly compelling framing sequence. It isn't often where the cliffhanger comes in at the framing sequence, and that makes it all the more special. One story that didn't gain anything from the second reader was the Benny CC. The character of Gatlin probably got her own actress because she was the most prominent guest character. It was probably wise for The Apocalypse Mirror to use Wendy Padbury instead of a guest actor, as there weren't any significant characters other than Jamie.

I prefer by far those that have two actors.

most of the time a second actor is needed, how could you have told the sara kingdom trilogy with out 2 actors, last post, solitaire and many others
there are a few especially towards the end of the run where I can see, the stories told were not as well crafted for the two voices.
but on the whole I would rather have 2 actors

The Glorious Revolution is one of my absolute favorite CC's but I hate the framing device with a passion for script reasons. That being said I did highly enjoy Andrew Fettes performance. I thought he was terrific.

I like the two-companion stories (Upstairs comes to mind), the two-handers (Solitaire, The Time Museum) and the ones with a good framing story. Stoyn was also an inspired use of a second actor, given that he provided a link between the three stories.
I don't think some of them needed it, though. Mostly ones like House of Cards or A Town Called Fortune where I can't even remember who the second character was.

Two Actors works great for me in the CC Range

Comparing the CC's to the Short Trips where this is only one actor I have to say that the CC's always feel like they have more energy because the two actors can spark off each other. A simple reading or recounting like the Short Trips doesn't get that extra benefit.

Having Fraser and Wendy in the 'Apocalypse Mirror' would have been grest, if Wendy had had anything to do. Some gets very few lines and I think Fraser does all the narrating.
Lords of the Red Planet is a much better example of dual narration.
