Moving this from the Torchwood page and inspired by bonehead, what would you suggest as a Dark Shadows story to start with if you’re completely new to the range? Thank you in advance, bonehead! This could be an expensive month 😂👍

I always do things the wrong way round. Like you, I wasn't familiar with the TV show at all (I subsequently bought the entire run in a coffin-shaped DVD box-set), and only hesitently dipped my toe in BF's Dark Shadows range: it was a story called Night Whispers and it was, apparently, the one and only time Jonathan Frid had reprised his role as Barnabas Collins. Who, I wondered? Didn't matter. The story, by the talented Stuart Manning (I've met him, you know - very modest about his DS work) is rich with continuity - but that didn't matter to me. Listening to this was such an enjoyable experience, the references only made me curious to find out more - and I did, by getting everything DS-related that Big Finish released!
While Night Whispers dealt with two incredible old gentlemen reminiscing about their extraordinary lives, other stories, like London's Burning, Clothes of Sand, Skinwalkers, The Creeping Fog, House by the Sea and The Blind Painter (many of which feature Doctor Who cast members in guest roles) focussed on new situations, new horrors.
It's true that there are many DS releases, but I noticed the earlier ones are £4.99 which is a real bargain. Or you could go for collected downloads - The Horror Collection, Welcome to Collinsoport, The Quentin Collins Collection or The Tony and Cassandra Collection. These names may be new, but don't worry about that - it's the stories that are the thing. The continuity will fall into place, and when it doesn't, it'll just leave you curious to find out more.
I'll end by rolling out my sadness once again, that the range seems to have ground to a halt.

It has not ground to a halt. There are people pushing it but there are... circumstances. But yes, I would recommend the Horror Collection. There's a very good one in there written by some guy, what's his name?, I want to say "Morris"?

This could be an expensive month 😂👍 It's been a minute since I've listened to any Dark Shadows audios (and boy do I miss this range, hopefully the "circumstances" are cleared up sooner rather than later). Off the top of my head though, I remember especially enjoying: - Clothes of Sand - The Blind Painter - The House by the Sea - Beyond the Grave Those last two in particular. And there are plenty more than I enjoy, those are just the ones that I immediately recall. The miniseries Bloodlust is also a very entry-point-friendly release as well. It's enriched quite a bit if you're familiar with a number of audios that preceded it, but the first time I listened to it I was largely unfamiliar with the DS range, and I really had a great time without any of that as prior knowledge. There's a...rather cringe British/American English flub at a crucial moment in the story, but that's honestly the worst criticism I can level against it -- Bloodlust is a really, really terrific piece of work. The follow-up miniseries Bloodline is very good too, I really enjoyed it as well, but I'll offer a slight caution here that it leans rather heavily on continuity that stretches back into the TV series. I still enjoyed it, I don't want to give you the impression that it was bad--it wasn't at all, it's very good. Just saying, that as I listened to it I had to spend a fair amount of time perusing the Dark Shadows Wiki to understand some things that were going on; and if that's going to be a stumbling block for you as a new DS viewer/listener, heads up.

This could be an expensive month 😂👍 stories I would suggest as a starting point, maybe historic 28 "Speak No Evil" is a decent stand-alone story, so no previous familiarity needed 7 "The Wicked and the Dead" - a dark story and one of the first I listened to "Blood and Fire" - back in time to an earlier generation of the Collins family so only time-travelled witch Angelique has any previous stories - so a good start point modern 23 "House by the Sea" - a particularly dramatic performance by Colin Baker as a new arrival in town so really good intro 16 "The Death Mask" - the first of the Tony and Cassandra spin-off - while some references to events in the TV series I didn't have any problem with it (and I hadn't seen any of the TV series before listening to it)

Seconded. I started with See No Evil and The House By the Sea myself. Thought it was an excellent introduction to what the range has to offer even without prior knowledge of the series.

House by the Sea was my first foray too. Highly recommended. And Colin is spectacular in it.
Beyond the Grave is definitely worth a visit too. Aaron is a very disturbing guy.
(One of my proudest moments was when we signed up to Bloodline and he had just listened to Shurafa and he looked me straight in the eye and "and people think *I'm* the sick one." I mean obviously he is, but that was a good review I thought.)

Possibly my favourite of all the "Main Range" DS releases.. I have ear bashed 1 of the Producers way too many times expressing my admiration and also the Writer (I completely didn't connect the dots who I was chatting too online ).. It was the article in Vortex that caught my eye, I love love love Horror movies (all the types and styles) this story is ear heaven for me, so much going on.
Woops.. Congratu-ranting again about #38 ..

So what is really going on with the range? Rob Morris writes: "It has not ground to a halt. There are people pushing it but there are... circumstances." What circumstances? Has the Curtis estate pulled the DS license, as they did with KLS and her books? Is it because they think the IP is worth more for the (proposed) TV continuation of the series? I'd just like some new information.

Trace -- She wrote about it on FB. Apparently she wanted to put out a new ediion of the music book and the estate wouldn't give her the rights. She was NOT happy about it.

A day late, but happy 56th birthday Dark Shadows 😁 And BF didn't even do a Sale this time. I'd like to know if BF have recouped the cost of the Licence Extension yet, because otherwise its their biggest waste of money going, I mean I'm not a Fan anyway, but would Multiple Re-Casts with UK/European performers not be sensible at this point or more from the next generation?
