I wonder where Chibnall creatively stands on ever making the Doctor a woman? If he brings Saint Olivia over from Broadchurch - I'd love it (after 2 more years of Capaldi!) She's spoken about being a bit upset to only get a tiny role in Series 5. Maybe time to rectify that!

I just hope Chibnall is a Big Finish fan!

2016 to only air one episode, the Xmas special. With Moffatt's final season to air in 2017 and Chibnall to take over in 2018. t.co/eV00P3zrnYChibnall's DW pedigree, for anyone who's forgotten (or didn't know)... He wrote five episodes of DW: 42, The Hungry Earth & Cold Blood (the Silurian 2-parter), Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, and The Power of Three. He also wrote two of the DVD minisodes: Pond Life, and P.S. Chibnall was also the de facto head writer of Torchwood for its two first seasons, penning eight episodes in total. In season 1, he wrote Day One, Cyberwoman, Countrycide, and the season finale End of Days. In season 2, he wrote the premiere episode Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, as well as the 3-part season finale, Adrift, Fragments, and Exit Wounds. Outside of the Whoniverse, he has been involved with Life on Mars, Law & Order UK, and is co-creator/showrunner of Broadchurch.

Excellent news, it's time i think Moffat left, Hell Bent was a very disappointing finale & Husbands Of River Song wasn't great, Chris Chibnall is a good choice, i loved 42 & Torchwoods Sleeper so let's give him the benefit of the doubt before we all judge what he has in store for the series.
I remember some of us old school Whovians went years & years without a new series so a year ain't that long a wait & there's still a Christmas special.
Keep Capaldi though he's excellent.

Yes, when I see people say we're missing a year, it really bugs me because they're twisting the facts. We ALWAYS miss 9 months anyway from a series finale to a series premiere. What's a few months more than that? A year! It's not as bad as people try and make it sound. It's a bit longer. Missing a whole series would mean we don't get Who for 2 years and that's not what is happening. It's being delayed f or the good of the show for a few months. No biggie as the kids probably don't say anymore. Yes, it'll be 12 months between new eps but surely as Big Finish fans we're the ones who will feel it the least? We get new Doctor Who all the time! :

I wonder where Chibnall creatively stands on ever making the Doctor a woman? I hope you know this could be a very nasty can of worms you've opened. Myself, I hope he keeps Capaldi and he has Moffat write the occasional episode. Personally, I'd like to hear his opinion on Big Finish ASAP.

To be honest, I'm not too upset about the wait, partly because I wasn't feeling that 'spark' with season 9 (as much as I enjoyed it), so maybe a break would help me be more enthusiastic for Series 10... but mostly because I don't really have a lack of Doctor Who thanks to BF.

I too will miss Moffat but after six years at the helm of a international franchise like Doctor Who, I respect anyone who says it is time to call it a day. I loved that Moffat was able to push & reinvent the show with Capaldi and feel like series 7 & 8 have been the most consistent run of episodes since the show returned 11 years ago. I also hope the 12th Doctor sticks around for at least one series with the new show runner. I think Chris Chibnall is like most prolific writers, some stuff is better received than others. I for one adore "Dinosaurs On A Spaceship" and though "The Power Of Three" was a nice riff on the same old alien invasion story. Anyway, we have two years to pass judgement on Chibnall before we actually seen any episode produced by him.

And hopefully a few extra months gives Peter Capaldi a chance to rest, relax and take care of his side projects so he feels like he wants to go another couple of years in the TARDIS. And yes, Big Finish becomes THE home for Doctor Who in 2016. Not the worst position to be in.

And we ARE getting a full series of Class. I know some aren't excited for it but I think it's got loads of potential. It certainly has a strong writer in Patrick Ness. It's also been rumoured that Capaldi may cameo. Nothing concrete but would certainly get people checking out the new show.

Always excited when someone new comes on board. Mr Chibnall knows the show and has extensive experience doing other things as well, which means a reasonably new pair of eyes and perspective. I'll miss Mr Moffat's work as he is one of my favourite TV writers and managed to steer the show into some exciting new directions and tried to always keep it fresh.

Firstly - I agree with each and every word. Moffat's been a fave of mine since Press Gang 20 years ago through Coupling and Jekyll and onto Who. I'll always keep an eye out for him. Secondly - I love that dog in your pic

Ok to be honest I am so glad, I know much of what I put here will not be popular but .... Well at least it honest
I just hope they dump capaldi as well, I really feel the show has moved to far from what it should be a family show. Story's to complex, rely too much on back story and coupled with a doctor who is unliveable, change was need.
Not to say there hasn't been some great stuff, just more misses than hits, and coupled with the fact I now know no one who watches it anymore, that's 20 people who watched and bought RTD era but have given up while moffats been in charge. I would have been happy if he had quit now!
I was never that fond of Matt smith but he was like a piped piper with the kids, cannot imagine many 5 year olds running to capaldi.
Great idea to move it, no more competeing with X factor, would rather it had a post Xmas slot but anything is better than 20:30 slot opposite X factor.
But the best news is that Beeb is committed to at least another 2 series, which is surprising with the so so viewing figures even if you add in I player
And the series is only to be delayed for 6 months
On the whole I think it's good news.

Well.... I suppose his episodes haven't been my favorite or least favorite. I rather liked the Silurian ones from S5, thought dinosaurs was actually pretty funny without being like Sherwood, and "Power of Three" was a big meh.
Then again, I have been a pretty consistent cynic when it comes to Moffatt, and he did write some of my absolute favorite episodes before taking over (other than Heavan Sent, which was during his run); so episode-writing isn't necessarily paramount even if the position is overall writer.
About to start Broadchurch but have heard great things about it.
So all in all, I'm happy enough. I'm absolutely thrilled that Moffatt is out as predicted AND we can stop worrying about when S10 hits.
At the end of the day though.....there's always Big Finish....and holy ****, this year is going to be good.

Gotta disagree re: capaldi. Think the only thing holding him back from being better (ditto Smith) was the show-runner. Besides, this should always be a show a child watches but an adult can appreciate as much (or more). No need to dumb it down, imo. The problem wasn't complexity of the plots. It was that they became complex and then fell apart into nonsense. Besides, children generally deserve a little credit. I'm no Einstein, but I definitely picked up on complexities in stuff like LOTR or The Mahabarrahta as a kid.
