I thought so too. It's been rumored for literally years though - and there have been Labyrinth comics - but curious this gets picked up now.

Yeah, bad timing, bad taste. Bowie would be hard to replace anyway, but the likelihood that Henson's puppet work will be replaced with CGI leaves me cold.

Labyrinth is so rooted in Henson's puppetry and Bowie's performance/soundtrack, that a reboot just seems entirely asinine. If anything, a spiritual sequel, or a story set in the same universe would be the more artistically prudent thing to to.

Not quite sure why it would have CGI over puppets - Lisa Henson, daughter of Jim and CEO of "The Jim Henson Workshop" is producing it so I think with her family involved the signs are that puppetry and animatronics would be heavily featured.

I'm glad to hear that. It's an element of the production that I didn't see mentioned in any of the news articles I read about the reboot. The puppetry in Labyrinth is so definitive that it makes me feel a bit gun shy about revisiting that world when the temptation for modern filmmakers to use CGI seems so great. The proximity of the announcement to Bowie's passing probably also colors my reaction to this news in a negative way. I'll take a wait and see approach, though. Always the best policy.

form what I know this not a reboot, it is yet another try to get the sequel (that has been worked on for years & years) greenlit, and unfortunately like album sales, DVD's, tribute concerts, etc., this is the an opportunity to get finance, where it has failed to in the past.
bowie has/had never been attached to the sequel.
but yes I want a sequel, I have always wanted one. it's funny how opinions change on the movie now we have lost bowie, it has always been seen as something of a joke/low point in his career from all sneerer's and jeerers (fright wig, puppet dancing, the songs, bowies acting less animated than the puppets).
but for me it's always been one of my favourite films even when it was very unpopular, hell I even bought it on commercial VHS (before the home VHS market took off) with my first months pay in 1987......it cost me £68 pounds a fortune back then!

Nicole Perlman has clarified that it is a sequel that's been in the works for a while, not a reboot, and theorized all the reboot stuff was just click-bait to get people riled up. I guess it kind of worked. I feel a fool. A fool I say! Anyway, like muckypup said, I reckon a sequel could be alright, at least potentially.

Not interested in seeing this rebooted personally, the original film whilst not quite a masterpiece, is a atmospheric cult classic, firmly rooted in its time, I don't think a reboot/sequel all these years with CGI etc will have the same effect, nor, if I'm honest be very commercially successful.
