Digimon Survive I've never played a visual Novel before. The story and characters were very good, but the dialogue could have been a bit leaner. I liked how different the endings were, but it was a bit of a slog to text-skip to the point of divergence on New Game+.
Apparently the SRPG sections were a bit basic, but having never played one of those before either, I enjoyed them a lot. And the 2D sprites on 3D looked really good. Actually the whole game was quite pretty.

Didn't play myself, but was looking over my son's shoulder as he played Star Wars battlegound onhos Xbox. As he was running up and down and up and down and up and down the dunes and hills of Tatooine (very realistic I must say) I felt waves of nausea starting to come over me and had to look away. Guess I'm gettign old!

I still enjoy my hunting game (Way of the Hunter) a lot. A couple of hours at night to wind down and just relax walking through virtual woods and hunting some trophies. The game is getting some mixed reviews. There are a few severe bugs, and I admit I have indeed encountered these- like falling off the map after fast travel and two fatal error crash to desktop. But honestly, I played the Elder Scrolls games since Morrowind, and as sad as it might sound, I just feel like I am used to these types of bugs. I just shrug and re-start the game. Some people on Steam got pretty worked up about it. But the developer has promised to fix this in the next patch (or so) so I do not worry too much. So far, I personally have gotten a lot of joy and playtime out of the game. And I think this is the most important bit. It is a slow game, that forces you to take your time and to have patience. It decelerates the day. Big PLUS in my book. Also, the story is gripping and the story missions (basically the tutorial) are challenging and not all are about hunting. I even get a strong "Firewatch" vibe out of it. And that is BIG praise.

Too creepy for me. I've tried it a couple of times and only manage a few hours before the constant anxiety just becomes... too much.
i absolutely adore how they integrate the GUI into the game in-universe. Really wish more games were like that.
Anyway, lately I've been on a platforming bender and have fished out my ancient PS3 to play some of the classics. I plan on (eventually) going through the three big remaster trilogies (Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter) as well as Maximo and the Ratchet and Clank: Future games. Currently I've finished up the first two Ratchet games and have started up the third, Up Your Arsenal.
You get a starship as a hub area and it's awesome. So far I think I liked Going Commando best -- Arsenal seems a bit too linear and action-focused for my tastes. I do hope the dogfighting mini-game comes back in future games because it was really, really fun in Commando.
Its really a shame they don't make games like this any more. Can you even imagine a modern AAA game that gave you an excellent third-person shooter, 3D platformer, 2D platformer, racing game and flight combat simulator all rolled up into one package? It's crazy.

UnMetal An indie spoof game of the Metal Gear series that borrows mechanics from the 2D MSX game. I enjoyed it a lot. Gameplay was good, and the writing was a very web-comic-ish. A good web-comic mind. It has a fun framing device where the main character (Jesse Fox) is recounting the events in an interrogation room. There's some silly unreliable narrator options you can pick to mix up different playthroughs.

Once again I find myself wishing I had the time and/or concentration for MMOs. Every time I log I to STO I spend all of my time re-learning how to play, and wind up setting the game aside right when I finally get back in the groove.
And speaking of groovy things, y'all excited for all the games news we got yesterday? Three whole Front Mission remakes; a trio of AAA open-world samurai games; and a spiffy new Ouroboros logo (and, finally, a release date!) for the next Zelda game! I'm ecstatic! Ryu ga Gotoku! Ishin was already one of my favorite games, so I am beyond psyched for the remake. I have a hard time caring about Assassins Creed, but I'm still optimistic on that front--surely, if nothing else, it's at least unlikely to be as orientalist as Ghost of Tsushima was. But wow, that trailer for Rise of the Ronin looks fantastic. That period of history is such an exciting era to explore! And that art style--goddamn.

And actually, I only play it for the original actor content. I have not even leveled up all of my starships and still have some un-opened ship-prices from give-aways. Also have not played seriously for a while (not taking part in any of this years give-aways).
Nah, I also do not have the time for it, and honestly, it is quite easy to play (and my character is completely OP now)- I basically just walk around, press buttons to interact, occasionally take a healing hypo and/ or use my special skills.
Right now I am the most casual of gamers, just was curious for Wil Wheaton.
As for the other Japanese games you mention- sounds interesting. However, anything that looks good might not run on my potato laptop and also I totally suck at fighting games (at least in STO I can use fighting drones that fight for me and spare me the hassle). I have the reaction time of an old lady and two left hands. Plus, I get frustrated very easily- things like Dark Souls are my nightmare and will not be touched because it will only cause me to rage quit.
No wonder I like this immersive hunting game where you can take your time and just stroll around the forest. Oh, and I started this postal worker game (The Lake) because it was recommended for me, because I liked "Firewatch". It is a small town story and you chat with people and deliver mail. Not sure if there are any dark secrets, sounded more like a relaxing experience. Tells you a lot about my current time at work and the state of my exhausted mind if my idea of evening entertainment is delivering mail.....

A name for Zelda is nice, and I'll have to take time off when it launches. I'm mildly concerned about Fire Emblem, I feel a little too much of the Heros influence, but I'm hoping that the strategy gameplay is as solid as ever. I', excited for Pikmin 4, I've always enjoyed those titles. Tales of Symphonia remaster should be good, I might actually finish it this time. I'm looking forward to Crisis Core, but I'll be grabbing that for PS5. I'm cautiously optimistic about Octopath 2, I love the art style and gameplay, but the first one failed to keep me hooked. Lastly I'm over the moon about Goldeneye coming back, I'll be grabbing that day one on my xbox. I'm a little sore about the lack if Metroid Prime 4, but that's nothing new.

Return to Monkey Island. I would like to stress that I have only purchased the game -- I have not even installed it yet. Yet, since I made that purchase yesterday, that theme music has been running in my head non-stop. It's been two days. Nah, I also do not have the time for it, and honestly, it is quite easy to play (and my character is completely OP now)- I basically just walk around, press buttons to interact, occasionally take a healing hypo and/ or use my special skills.

I'd like to eventually get to the point in STO where I can just casually consume the story bits (lots of stuff seems interesting) but it seems like you need to invest a fair amount of time in the combat and ship upgrading bits to even access that stuff, which tends to bore me. Maybe someday. Personally I really love the Souls the games, but yeah, the difficulty can often be pretty frustrating. I find it the best advice for new players is this: the most important thing you need to do to enjoy a Souls game is recontextualize player death. In most action games or RPGs, when you die, you think, "Oh now, I' failed." Whereas in Souls, you should approach it more like making a mistake in Tetris, or missing a jump in a platformer, where you just think, "oops," and immediately try again. It sucks that the combat makes these games so inaccessible, or at least seem that way, when they've got some of the absolute best exploration, dungeon design, and art direction in the medium. These worlds are just... incredible, profound, moving to wander through. And so many monsters that will make your jaw drop. Like, man, those finger-spiders in Elden Ring are just delightfully creepy. Anyway, on the topic of low-key exploration/adventure games, have you heard of Eastshade? I think it's only on Steam, but it's got one of my absolute favorite premises (even if the actual game is a bit janky): you play as a painter, wandering around a fantasy-inspired island, meeting people, drawing things, and basically spend all of your time exploring and talking to NPCs (very light puzzle/questing). Absolutely no combat or anything like that. Very relaxing. I definitely recommend it, but it is a bit flawed -- like the actual paintings are just screenshots, with no filter or anything applied to make them look like they're actually painted (you'd think a photography game would've made more sense) and the game also arbitrarily limits how much you can paint (unnecessary resource management). It's a fantastic idea, though. Might've originally been a mod for Skyrim, like that Roman game (The Lost City? Something like that) that came out last year. (And speaking of that "genre," have you managed to play Breath of the Wild? I utterly adore the photography mini-game in it -- basically, you fill out the encyclopedia with photographs of every plant, animal, monster and item in the game. I had so much fun just wandering around, stealthing through the tall grass, taking photos. When they announced a new Pokemon Snap game I had high hopes it'd be similar, but it wound up being just a simple on-rails game like the N64 original. Ah well. I've yet to watch the State of Play or the Nintendo Direct, but I was pleased with what I heard nintendo announced. A name for Zelda is nice, and I'll have to take time off when it launches. I'm mildly concerned about Fire Emblem, I feel a little too much of the Heros influence, but I'm hoping that the strategy gameplay is as solid as ever. Lastly I'm over the moon about Goldeneye coming back, I'll be grabbing that day one on my xbox. I'm a little sore about the lack if Metroid Prime 4, but that's nothing new. Yeah... the new Fire Emblem does not look good. The art style is one thing, but the (frankly, insipid) premise is quite another. It definitely feels like the kind of zero-effort premise you'd expect from a mobile game. That said, I remember (many millennia ago) the announcement trailer for Fire Emblem: Fates looks just completely fantastic. It looked so cool! And then the game came out, and man, that writing was so, so bad. The inverse happening may be unlikely, but it's not impossible. Strong agree on Octopath. The first one was so dull! Maybe the second one will be better. I hope so. At least there's also the DQIII remake, in the same engine, to look forward to. Assuming it hasn't been cancelled? There was a big Dragon Quest event a few days ago (or last week?) but zero mention of either DQIIIR or DQXII. But speaking of JRPGs, we've got Trails from Zero coming out next week! I am very excited! Trails in the Sky SC is my all-time favorite JRPG -- and by all accounts the Crossbell duology is much closer to the Liberl games than the much-more mediocre Cold Steel stuff. I can't wait! Getting it on both Switch and PC day one. And, of course, there's the news of the Suikoden 1 and 2 remasters! Also very exciting! After the #1 spot, my top JRPG "list" doesn't really have concrete numbers, but Suikoden 2 is definitely right up there near the pinnacle (alongside DQVIII, XCX, FFVII, FFX, CT, etc.).

Doom: Eternal I loved Doom 2016, so I've had this one in my back-catalogue for a while. It's VERY different. You have to think a lot more about your weapon economy and battle flow. Constantly moving and thinking about where pickups and cover are.
Pert of me thinks I should lower the difficulty, but damn is it satisfying when you finally over-come a hoard. I just wish the loading between deaths wasn't quite so long.

Happy Trails! Do I need to make a separate thread for that? I kinda want to, but maybe it's too narrow a niche for this community? Eh, probably so. Or maybe a JRPG general thread...? Ah, well. Haven't had much time for it, but enough to be very impressed with the quality of the ports. It's kind of weird they didn't advertise it as such, but I'd say the work Durante put into Zero definitely qualifies it for being a full-on remastering. Never thought I'd ever see those sprites look so crisp and clear. Return to Monkey Island. I would like to stress that I have only purchased the game -- I have not even installed it yet. Yet, since I made that purchase yesterday, that theme music has been running in my head non-stop. It's been two days. I hope you can get it to run, my desktop computer is too old and the game doesn't appear to like laptops at all. Oof, that sucks. It runs beautifully for me, thankfully, though I've not put much time into it yet. Really love the story they're telling, and the puzzles are nice -- towing that fine line between being too easy and too random perfectly. The animation is also really good, especially when they zoom in for close-up scenes. Easily the best-looking adventure game since Broken Age.
