Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Apparently it's been 7 years since my last playthrough. Some of it's a little aged and janky, but damn is it a blast. It might not have the meta commentary of 2, or the smooth flowing animation/character control of V, but it's choc full of charm and little hand-made details that make it easily the most loveable entry in the series.

One of my all-time favourite games, it's a nice straightforward plot, especially after the events of MGS 2, and it's something that we never really got again. I'd absolutely love it if this game was either remastered or remade from the ground up. I'd love to go through that jungle again with modern graphics.

Picked up Star Wars: Squadrons for dirt cheap the other day. I don't care in the slightest about multiplayer but I've been playing through the campaign and enjoying it. Bonus points for it being connected to the Alphabet Squadron trilogy, which coincidentally I just read--and had no idea there was any connection at the time I bought the game.

I bought the big Metal Gear collection a couple years back (2018, maybe?) and loved MGS2, but only played a bit of MGS3 and haven't gotten back to it. I really need to give it another go. And maybe finish MGS5 someday, too.

Just started on Beacon Pines. Bought a few nice Indie mystery/ horror games at the Halloween Steam Sale. And this one just looks so cute and has a nice new spin on the text-based adventure genre. Very well made, cute, engaging, fun.... what more could you want to chill and wind down in the evening after traveling all day? (the reviews however warn that this might be cute... but later on, the creepiness would increase- looking forward to that)

I had a few minutes to dig into the new God of War today.
The opening was fun, but after the first little bit was done and dusted, the next bit with Atreus was an absolute gut punch. That scene brought back a lot of painful memories from a few years back.
Still, the fact that it could evoke that level of of empathy in the first few minutes bodes very well.

Oh right, I’m in the video game thread. For a moment, I thought you were talking about the Fifth Doctor Big Finish audio made as part of the Forty 1 box set.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Still a pretty damn great game. It's a lot shorter than I remember it being. I made myself a little challenge, where I tried to do a no kill, no alert run, but could only use the Tranq gun for boss battles, and it made the run through so much more tense, since I knew I couldn't just put everyone to sleep from a distance.
It's also the first time I've played it since Metal Gear Rising came out and it's fun revisiting the genesis of a lot of Raiden's character arc and themes in that game. I forgot how disturbed he was even then. There's even a line where Rose says "it's like you're living your life out loud for the first time" and like, she aint seen nothing yet.
And the final stretch of CODECs still creeps me out.
Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue I saw this on PSN, and figured I'd pick it up. It's a pretty damn fun classic style platform collectathon, though I wish there was an actually reward for 100%ing everything besides film clips. That being said, it did remind me of just how good of a film Toy Story 2 was, even from the few snippets.
Street Fighter V Always been more of a Tekken/SoulCalibur guy, but I do like a lot of the character designs, and it was on cheap so I picked it up. Still getting to grips with it.
Yooka Laylee Only played a little so far. I like the art style, but the humour and gameplay haven't quite got me yet.
Hollow Knight Been trying to beat the remaining challenges, like the Pantheon Bindings and Radiant Difficulty. I've actually managed to beat more of them than I expected, but I'm stuck on the Nail Masters, Knight and Radiance.

Okay, so it turns out I accidentally bought Resident Evil HD twice last month, so now I've got an extra Steam key if anyone wants it. First person who asks, receives. This is the PC port of the Gamecube remake of the original PS1 game. I've only played a bit of it so far, but it seems relatively well optimized and stable... full controller support... but it is just a port, so not many bells and whistles. EDIT: Also, if no one wants it, I'll give it a week before I try looking elsewhere for some poor sod to unload it onto. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of LibertyStill a pretty damn great game. And the final stretch of CODECs still creeps me out. Platform? And, yeah, those last few Codec Calls... hell, that finale in general, is incredible. I played MGS2 for the first time... three years ago, I think? And it still hit me like a ton of bricks. We talk about "aging" a lot with video games, but far from aging well, I suspect MGS2 lands much harder today than it did when it first released. When was that, like 2002 or something? Those themes are startlingly prescient. Still need to play MGS3, though. And maybe MGS4. My first proper console was the PS3, and I remember giving up on MGS4 after an hour or two thinking it was the stupidest thing I'd ever seen. Maybe I'll be better able to appreciate it now? Anyway, I recently set up bluetooth on my PC so I can use a gamepad from afar, and have been going to town on various emulators. Did y'all know the "nightly build" version of PCSX2 basically turns it into a launcher like Steam? There are even (somehow) achievements, which I haven't tried; but also custom game art and play time tracking, which I love. So I've been getting into a bunch of PS2 games I never played back in the day (though my PS3 had b/c, so I was able to play a whole bunch of 'em as a kid). So far most of my time has been spent with Blood Omen 2 (also known as "the bad Legacy of Kain game") and Silent Hill 3. Games that I'd meant to play during October, for the Halloween vibes, but never quite got around to. In addition to Resident Evil on Steam, of course.

PS3 HD Collection. I first played the game when I was very young, and a lot of it went over my head. It took a few years for me to really get it. Actually, the themes and stuff aside, I think I was still developing my general taste in things. I don't think it was until Peace Walker that I really started appreciating the series for all it was. As clever and insightful as it could be, it was equal parts incredibly dumb, weird and idiosyncratic. And all the more lovely and endearing for it. So maybe you will appreciate 4 on revisiting. I re-played it not too long ago, and if nothing else, it has some stand-out set pieces.

There's not really much to say about it, but if any of y'all are like me and have a hard time listening to Big Finish audios in isolation, with nothing to keep your hands busy... well, I've recently found that Vampire Survivors is an excellent game to play while listening to something.
Basically, it's a bullet-hell roguelike where you face off against escalating waves of enemies, where each time you level up you select a different ability or upgrade an existing ability. The gameplay itself is very simple -- you just move around the map. That's it. All of the combat is automatic. It requires very little concentration, so it's a great way to be doing something while your brain is more focused on what you're listening to.
It's also dirt cheap, even at full price, so it's an easy game to recommend.

I am a big gamer, so my main way of listening to audios are done while doing collectibles/non-story things, but my time for gaming has been very little.

A while ago, when it came out, I bought "Shadows over Loathing".
I love the concept: "Can you make a good game, using nothing else than weird black and white stick figures as graphics- while still having interesting weird characters, clever puzzles, lots of humor and fantastic writing?" As a Who fan, who is still into discovering the classic series, this concept instantly appealed to me. Reminds me a lot of Davison and his love for wobbly sets!
However, as much as I like the concept, the previous game "West of Loathing", which everyone seems to be raving about, did NOTHING for me. I tried. I just could not get into it. The weird Old West jokes also did annoy me. I could appreciate what they tried to do, but it just did not click with me.
So yesterday, I started on Shadows over Loathing. A black and white stick figure comedy horror game. And it instantly clicked. I am LOVING it. I love the weird characters, I love the clever writing, I like the humor (making fun of all the old Lovecraftian themes and horrors), I feel a sense of accomplishment when I figure out a riddle, I LOVE that you can just go for the weirdest options available and all are VALID. So I am now playing a haunted cheese wizard. OMG, I love that this is even a thing. I even enjoy the combat so far, usually, in witty games like these, I find combat more annoying than anything, but I now approach combat now with "this is just another riddle where you can use your weird cheese wizard powers". I also went into this blind, not knowing the different classes or the plot, and I have decided I will go for the weirdest options and paths available. Apparently, you are also meant to re-play the game to see all the different plots, and I think for a second play, I might try the "pacifist option".
I am happy that games like these are still made. A lot of love and thought went into this. Even if you are just playing a stick figure character on a black and white screen.

Been revisiting Star Wars: Dark Forces via the new sourceport, and also been playing Luigi's Mansion 3 since getting it for Xmas from my sister. Having a fabulous time with both.

Ooh, I loved Luigi's Mansion. Really hope we get a new one soon. Anyway, January has kind of sucked for me and im currently on day 3 of not sleeping, so I've been playing some of my favorite "comfort games" -- well, the ones that don't take too much concentration, at least, so no 4X or narrative-heavy games. Mostly this means Vampire Survivors still (just passed the 20 hour mark, which is a lot for me), Rise of Nations (GOAT) and Okami. For a bit there i thought I was maybe speedrunnng Okami, as I was blitzing through it (I thought) super fast, but then I made the mistake of looking it up. Yeah, the records for all-brush runs are all in the 3-4 hour range, which is nuts. (I was looking to clear it in 6-7 hours if it was lucky, now I think I'll just 100% this save. Okami really is the best comfort game out there. Just oozes charm out of every pixel. A while ago, when it came out, I bought "Shadows over Loathing". .... Ooh, neat. I remember reseeding a lot of buzz for that when it released, but a lot of the reviews put me off it -- essentially saying it's very divisive, a game to either love or hate with no in-between. I've got enough in my backlog not to need to take too many risks, but if you liked it, then I think I should definitely check it out.

I've got enough in my backlog not to need to take too many risks, but if you liked it, then I think I should definitely check it out. Yes, even looking at the Steam reviews tells you that it is a bit of a Marmite Release. I figured that since I could not get into West of Loathing, and many people who did not like "Shadows" expected more of "West", that it would be something I should try. One of the issues I had with "West" was that a lot was just tooled for making as many jokes as possible and some of them I found just too silly.
I am also not a fan of the immensely popular "funny walks" (leave that to Monty Python!) or the "Spitoon"- business.
I do not want to spoiler too much, but "funny walks" is still in "Shadows" for the people who are inclined, but I choose to just ignore it (one of the complaints in the Steam reviews also was that "funny walks" was gone, but the person obviously had not figured out that it now needs a different "button").
I also thought that "West" was ambling along too much. I missed a red line and something to tie the quests together more tightly in a more cohesive whole. It felt a bit pointless to me.
Shadows over Loathing? Gripped me from the start. Character creation is amazingly creative. The Prologue is already an awesome showcase for the rest of the game.
If you like that, then this is your game.
If you buy via Steam you can always play the Prologue and if you do not like, just demand your money back. This is the great thing about Steam- if you do not use more than 2 hours, you can always give it back.
The whole feel is different from "West"- the humor is NOT the main goal of the game anymore. It has a story and it has a sense of underlying dread (well, it weighs heavily into the Lovecraft universe).
Yes, of course there are still a lot of jokes, but it also has some nice quests which you do not play through to get to the joke at the end, but because you think the story is interesting and you wonder what weird resolution they pull out of the hat this time. I also can go full out with always going for the weirdest option possible and it still remains playable and viable.
Would you like it? Since we share a certain taste, I would say yes. You are already a Doctor Who fan, so you won't be put off by the VERY simple black and white stickfigures; but you will enjoy the clever writing, all the strange and weird events and characters and the nice puzzles (some of them take quite a bit of thinking!).
