I picked up a physical copy at Gallifrey One yesterday. It takes all of 2 minutes for this set to kick the door in. While I've only heard 15 minutes so far, it's great to have more wacky adventures with Vienna & Jexie.

It's a bit silly that I bought a physical copy a few days before my digital copy shows up, but I just love the series that much and really wanted to hear it as soon as possible. No really, big spoilers!!! "You are under arrest for the murder of Jexie Reagan." The partnership between Vienna & Jexie is what has put this series over the top as something special. Despite having a strong hunch this would be the catalyst for the set, I still wasn't ready when that moment hit within the first 3 minutes or so. (Pro-tip: Don't listen to the first 15 minutes of a set during a con food run!) This premise for the story left me very uncertain as to whether or not this story would work for me. We see how much Vienna has grown since her first appearance in The Shadow Heart.
Episode 1 frames a typical Vienna/Jexie madcap adventure through the eyes of a by-the-book prosecutor who is indignant at Vienna's methods. The contrast between the fun of the adventure & the foreknowledge of how it ends plays out beautifully. It jumps from super confident Vienna to a Vienna deep in anguish.
Episode 2 has Vienna assimilating to life in the Splinter, making friends with criminals and angling to investigate further as to what is causing people to act violently against their own will & memories. To be honest, there were bits of this story that dragged a bit as the rules of the Splinter were explained at length. That aside, Annette Badland puts in an excellent performance as Mama Val, as does Samuel Harris as Ratz.
Episode 3...wow. Guy Adams twists everything around 3 or 4 times and puts a bowtie on it all. This set is unbelievably prescient as to the "Me Too" movement that has grown in the time since it was written & recorded. Rex Needle is the sort of power hungry jerkface who feels all-too-real at the moment. He wields power over others & thinks everyone is well beneath him. There were some moments in the set that bordered on uncomfortable when he has the upper hand, evoking abuse of power by politicians and Hollywood moguls.
Where this set really pays off for fans of Season 2 & 3 is seeing Jexie pulling off a Viennaesque plan that even Vienna doesn't realize is underway. It challenges the nature of their partnership & shows Jexie is every bit as badass as Vienna. As much as my heart broke during the opening scenes of Episode 1, it was strained as heck listening to Jexie plead her case & Vienna dealing with a perceived breach of trust. Masterson & Béart pulled off so much during this final scene together it's unreal. Vienna & Jexie are my favorite Big Finish team & I am so incredibly thankful that the cast & crew gave us this beautiful scene. Kudos to everyone involved & I hope we get more Vienna over the years to come.

Makes a nice change to see something reviewed by a physical CD purchaser before the downloaders!

I really enjoyed this. I am surprised it does not get more love on here! It is very much like a big action blockbuster in cinema, get yourself some popcorn and enjoy the explosions. Yes, it is not deep and philosophical, but we have (for example) Benny and the Warner Doctor for that. For what it is, Vienna Retribution is very well made. It is exciting, very atmospheric, well performed and well written (surprise, it is Big Finish). It kept my attention throughout and I did listen to it in one go because I just wanted to hear what was happening next. So if you are looking for some light hearted fun and some explosions, look no further.

Its strange its almost as if i was a totally different person when this series Vienna was recommended to me and now I am recommending it to others. Now i class it as one of those really enjoyable series that i pop in and out to Vienna is such a fun character and although originally introduced into the WHO universe her stories are not encumbered by it. Loving each of the sets i can see her as Crossover material but glad its been avoided.Though i really think Vienna ,River and Bennie really would be a great listen full of promise and most of all FUN. I hope we havent heard the last of Miss Salvatori

was good to see her at Big Finish day in derby. Bought one of the Be Kind t-shirts. A fine sentiment worth promoting especially now. Also a great actress - her Survivors and Vienna s4 performances poles apart and totally compelling. She does seem a very nice human being and pretty witty with a comeback I am just about to do her Retribution again and started on and finished all three stories in the previous set again. It’s not swamped by Who and that’s why it’s fun and enjoyable stuff

I listened to this a few days ago. I've been listening to a box set a month, and I've enjoyed seeing the series develop. I agree with some of the posters early in this thread that I kind of miss the memory shenanigans that were going on in the early releases, but I also quite enjoy where the series has moved to now. As for Retribution itself, I found it very enjoyable I thought it was very well paced for a three-hour adventure, steadily unfolding the mystery while keeping things back. The one thing I think it did take too long to do was confirmed Jexie's survival though. I didn't believe for a second that they'd killed her off like that, so waiting two-and-a-half hours for the confirmation felt like a little bit of a slog. Like I say though, I very much enjoyed the set, and I'm looking forward to Vienna's appearance in Master! next year

And yes definitely looking forward to Chase and Eric in the soon release
