A bumper BF day, finished off with another listen to 'The Genocide Machine'.
This one gets a bit of undue stick on review sites but I like the Dalek plot, years in the making, and the atmosphere of the very wet rain forest planet. I tend to find good relisten values in quite a few of the early Monthly Range titles.
A fine 7 out of 10.

Last night I listened to Pathfinder Legends 3.4 A History of Ashes for the first time. Still enjoying the range and especially the characters, and I liked the character work here. This afternoon I gave another listen to Dark Shadows The House of Despair and The Book of Temptation, and this evening I listened again to the first 5 parts of The Legacy of Time. Grand finale Collision Course tomorrow.

Not BF: Audiobook of Mark Gatiss' novel Last of the Gadarene
Era-perfect Third Doctor + Jo + UNIT adventure in and around an English village during a hot summer - ideal listening for the recent weather! Really excellent reading by Richard Franklin, very dynamic, makes the exciting bits sound exciting, the horror properly disgusting and does justice to the lighter moments too. Made the audiobook live in my ears.
Not many audiobooks make me shout 'YES!' while watering the garden (no doubt to the astonishment of any listening neighbours, snails and plants ) but this one did: {Spoiler} A long-awaited senior police officer arrives from Scotland Yard to take charge of the crisis and - as I'd been hoping - it's Chief Inspector Masters and you will obey him!

Blood of the Daleks as a lot of people seemed to be revisiting Eight's early days at the moment. Could be just me though. From what I've read/heard of Steve Lyons's stories, Blood is a little bit like Planet of the Daleks. A bit of everything from everywhere as appropriate. A mishandled Time Lord operation, the doomed colony creating its own monsters, companions at loggerheads and mob violence. It's a funny story now because of how its aged and in quite a marked way as well. At the time, I wouldn't have bat an eyelid at Eight's characterisation here. So close to the War, it was easy to see where all that anger came from. We were only a few steps away from the end (and Museum Peace as a capstone for his incarnation). Nowadays, with a wealth of stories in between, it comes across almost like a borrowing of the Ninth Doctor or Five in The Visitation. A day where he's just done with everything. It's cathartic, but a bit of a narrative air bubble. The rest of it also feels very mid-2000s with the Doctor branded a terrorist in Dalek propaganda, the uneasy alliance between Klint and Red Rocket's "saviours", the nice inversion of the Harriet Jones gag with Tom Caldwell and Asha (played by Hayley Atwell) being an almost archetypal RTD villain. This may sound like it's to the story's detriment, but actually, there's now this very interesting layer of zeitgeist that adds to the story's atmosphere. In the same way that Red Dawn leaned into the 1990s Sagan-esque optimism with outer space, Blood of the Daleks touches base with the War on Terror and that layer of grit now entwined with the storytelling of 2006. I've a soft spot for Lyons's work, so I still quite enjoy it. It's definitely changed, but it still holds up, albeit for different reasons. Random fun fact: The Doctor's shouting at the sky to address the Time Lords is a nice metatextual gag if you know how a pre-90s BBC set worked. The director wasn't typically on the floor as we'd expect nowadays, but up in a box above everything below. All their orders were relayed either through production assistants, runners or a microphone in the booth nicknamed a "godswitch". So, in reality, the actor was typically shouting protestations towards the director. Isn't that clever? Doctor Who - Legacy of Time Disc Three - The Sacrifice of Jo Grant This set just gets better and better. My first Tim hearing Trealor as 3 and he's amazing. Loved Osgood's reaction to talking to him > SUBJECT: WHISKEYBREWER MUST BE CONVERTED TO THE THIRD DOCTOR ADVENTURES: VOLUME FOUR. > CONVERSION DEMONSTRATES THE SUPERIORITY OF SUBJECT: TRELOAR, SUBJECT: MANNING AND THE CYBER-RACE. > END OF LINE

I took the plunge and put 'Zagreus' on...6m 46s in and I switched it off cos everyone was speaking gobbledygook. I'll revisit it at some point.
'Brotherhood of the Daleks' is a bit more linear, and a good story to boot. 7 out of 10.

More Eight Doctor with re-listens to some less listened-to stories, Seasons of Fear and Embrace the Darkness. Thought I'd go ahead listen to Time of the Daleks again too because I get a big kick out it, and next I knew I'd also heard Neverland again and was halfway through Zagreus, which was also overdue for another listen. I actually think I enjoyed all of them more than ever.

As it's CCs clearout time at BF, I picked an early one from my backlog that I'd not got round to hearing before:
2.2 Helicon Prime
Entertaining 'Agatha Christie-esque' space mystery and Frazer Hines is excellent as usual, his first BF role and right from the start his Troughton Doctor is a treat.
I enjoyed the vast array of alien diversity and spectacular sets on 'display' - all the futuristic imagination of some of the era's TV stories without any of the technical limits!
{Spoiler} And the twist at the end - a literal twist this time with the 'sonic knot' on Mindy's pendant, where her father hid the 'treasure'. So the Doctor must have known (even though Mindy didn't), realised she was up to no good and thought the treasure would be safely hidden with Jamie, who also knew nothing about what he was keeping. And they say the Seventh Doctor is the devious one! Verdict: 'Look at the quality of that thing, Doctor!' 'Yes, number13, it is a good one.'

Jago & Litefoot: Series 11It's been a slow process, but I'm eventually working my way through this range. This entry was pretty good overall, though not the strongest. I think the last episode would have been helped a lot if {Spoiler} they hadn't announced the Doctor's involvement in the marketing/on the cover. Because I know Colin was in it, I saw straight through his French accent without a second thought, which really spoiled the "surprise" reveal. But it was otherwise an enjoyable listen

BF listening: Mask of Tragedy - refreshingly original, with lots of little details that a person familiar with Aristophanes will catch.
non-BF listening: The Silmarillion, as read by Martin Shaw, who does an excellent job.
