Am I the only one hoping it's not Iris? YANA I purchased the Claws of Santa with Iris in a sale. I have tried to get through it a couple of times, but haven’t succeeded. I think you have to be in a particular receptive mood to listen to Auntie Iris.

I find her enjoyable as long as you don’t run the risk of overusing her. Bit like the Scorchies in that regard.

If this isn't the story of the children of a 17th century village being converted into a cult of Santa worshippers after the discovery of the remains of one Kris Kringle's little helpers in a farmer's field..if Peri doesn't succumb to the infection and start sprouting pointy ears, a penchant for wearing a pointy hat with a bell on the end and unfortunate candy cane habit..if Big Finish don't find a way to shoe horn Wendy Padbury and Simon Williams in to the plot and beg Derek Jacobi to take on the role of an elderly Rev.Fallowfield.....I'm gonna be soooooooooo disappointed*. 😋😋
*Hmmm..and if it isn't I've just had an inkling of an idea for next year's Short Trips opportunity...🤔

Am I the only one hoping it's not Iris? Personally I can't stand Iris and find it nearly impossible to re-listen to the few releases with her that I have.

To be fair to poor old Iris- she has been toned down a lot in Muse of Fire and the release was better for it. While I like her, I agree that she can become "too much" and you need to be in the mood for her.
I definitely loved her with Benny and The Wormery is one of my all-time favorite Who audios (an absurd story with superficial slapstick humor hides a surprisingly deep and emotional core).
mbt66- well, Claws of Santa.... I also got it on the Christmas sale, and I admit it is one of these Iris releases that are... slightly irritating.

I think the problem with Iris is they make the mistake of putting her in goofy stories. She works best as a goofy character in a serious story, probably why Muse of Fire is a big success. The Wormery is one of my favourite audios of all time as well. I also like the idea that is much more to the character than just the alcoholic partying time traveller - she thinks faster drunk than most of us do sober. The final Excelis shows that side to her. Her own range should have gone down that route more often.

I'm fine with a goofy story now and again, but I agree that all the best Iris stories have had something a bit more to them, with The Wormery being a particular standout.

Whether it's 'The Wormery' and 'Muse of Fire' with their rewarding plots and character crossovers, the excellent Who spoofs of 'Iris Vol 2' or the simply nuts 'Claws of Santa'; goofy, serious or spoof, with or without the Doctor, I love Iris! (And not only because Katy Manning is brilliant, but that too!)
As others have said, Iris stories may be a riot but they often contain hidden depths. Sometimes they're hidden more deeply than usual, that's all...

Stories about genocide on a global or cosmic scale (or even death and bloodsucking for that matter) aren't always the best thing to cheer a person up. Often enough I just have to ignore the subject material and bask in the great performances by familiar and beloved performers. Especially lately I really appreciate the power of Iris stories to lift my spirits, and even if I didn't happen to like Iris it would still be worth the price of admission just for Panda. That said, I thought Muse of Fire made for excellent holiday cheer last year even if a bit less goofy than the average Iris story and if I though another were on the way I would indeed be greatly looking forward to it.

As others have said, Iris stories may be a riot but they often contain hidden depths. Sometimes they're hidden more deeply than usual, that's all... To my surprise, I really liked Muse of Fire. As it was released at the same time as The Hunting Ground - I listened to this first as I automatically thought the Baker release would be better. Muse of Fire was the better story, which was a real shock. It was enjoyable and fun - with Iris providing a good comic foil for McCoy's darker Doctor. Olivier and Aldred also seem to be enjoying the script so it all worked well. Definitely a highlight of the 2018 MR. Would BF repeat the same trick with using Iris/Panda, but with Sixie, who knows? Certainly, Iris against bombastic Sixie could be quite fun! However, if BF are going back to the 'Festive' release a la The One Doctor/Bang Bang a Boom, I wonder if we are going to get a pastiche of the horror genre?

Iris starring in her own series and Iris as a supporting character in a Doctor Who story means that structurally the same character is pitched in two different ways. I am one who prefers Iris in a supporting role to Iris Unbound on her own and as such Muse of Fire was one of my favorite stories from last year.

Confirmation from his CV that Timothy Blore is playing the same character in River 7 as he was in River 5. He is also appearing in two things called "Dracula's War" and "Dracula's Guests"... www.spotlight.com/8817-8943-0479

Very interesting! I wonder if those two Dracula titles are continuations of the Big Finish adaptation. I'm hoping so as I really love that release.
