Well I just bought series 4 & 5. It's a good sale & I'd like to buy more but at $20.00 box I think I should stop there.

I really, really want to use this sale, but don't know whether I can actually afford any of them... ...knowing me, I'll have ordered series 2-4 by the end of the weekend

I'll be getting 6-8. Lovely surprise, I thought after the McGann sale last week and with a Bank Holiday weekend next week there'd be no chance of a sale this weekend.

I've been waiting for this sale. I bought series 1 & 2 on sale ages ago and then I bought series 7 and on when they came out, but I haven't heard anything in between. I don't think I can afford all of 3-6, but I will probably end up getting them anyway. No self control, you know.

I'd really like to use this sale, too, but at 20 a pop, there are other releases I want more right now.
Maybe I'll wait on this one. Still thinking.

If i just buy series 4 will i be lost? Do i need the first 3 box sets to understand whats going on? You don't need all of them but I'd recommend at least getting series 3. And of course get the two single releases,Venus and New World, that follow series 4 if you don't already have them (I got them for a pound each when they first came out and for years they were all I had of the range). Then series 5 directly follows on from those and makes no sense without them but isn't essential either (although it is amazing).

What if I get series 2 and 3 while they're on sale and go back and get series 1 later, since it's permanently reduced? Would I be lost? If I do it that way I'd only have to spend 40 bucks at one go.

Thanks Brian I've had the 2 "Voyage to" stories for ages which is what pipped my interest in listening to series 4! Think ill take your advice & get 3 & 4 whilst they are on offer i want more but I'm trying to be good after the 8th Doctor sale the other week lol

Series 1 is a follow-up to the Companion Chronicles story but from memory I'm sure it was very self contained and Series two works as a starting point. It's set 3 where more long term consequences start to kick in (presumably as confidence in the longevity of the range increased). Help me out if my memories playing me false guys.

You can always buy series 2 & 3 now when they are on sale and not listen to them until you get series 1. Save them up for a day when you don't have a lot to listen to (if there is ever such a day).

Ha! I have a backlog of releases I've bought and haven't listened to yet. That's not even an issue.

Personally since I've listened to most of them my initial recommendations would be Basically the backdoor pilot , which is from the Companion Chronicles series - 'the mahogany murderers' Voyage to Venus - which has Jago & Litefoot with the Sixth Doctor (Personally I'm not keen on Voyage to the New World) My favourite unfortunately isn't on sale 'Jago and Litefoot & Strax' which I consider the closest thing there is to a perfect Big Finish release. It's a brilliant amalgam of Old Who & New Who. But it definitely is well worth it, I think I've listened to it over half a dozen times. One of the best things I like about 'Jago & Litefoot' series is the chemistry between the leads. the behind the scenes extras are great fun to listen to and everyone is having a joyous time, they have a great rapport and craic and all the guest artistes are made to feel thoroughly welcome. Their chemistry and varied careers are exemplified by the 'Benjamin & Baxter' interview (the only downside being their isn't enough of them together). I would recommend Dr Who ********** website for user ratings of Big Finish stories, which is great for an indication of what to get since you couldn't afford them all unless you had won the lottery I would probably recommend series 2 overall, as this has the great David Collings as a comrade of Litefoot. Personal favourite stories are season 7's 'murder at moors eg manor' An homage to Sherlock Holmes and has the listener querying is it a Holmesian murder mystery with something supernatural lurking in the shadows ? Also Season 9s ''the devil's dicemen' with the awesome David Warner as Dr Luke Betterman who in many ways is more like Litefoots intellectual equal. But is he too good to be true? I wouldn't recommend series 4 involving Leela & a trap being set for the Doctor which climaxes in episode 4 nor series5 which is set in the swinging 1960s. Series 3 involves Leela too, being sent to investigate cracks in time by President Romana ( it's better than season 4 but I'm not a fan) I don't know about series 6, but I found series 8 disappointing because I preferred the Scorchies in the companion chronicles and the final story of series8 concentrated on the supporting characters of Ellie the barmaid & inspector Quick. For me the whole good thing about the series as a spin off comes from the relationship between the two main characters Jago & Litefoot. So series 1 is very good by setting the scene and letting them stretch their legs as characters and escape the doctors shadow which is heavily cast from 'the talons of weng chiang' and having the great support of Lisa Bowerman as the character of Ellie the barmaid, plus she excels at directing these actors. Then series2 is even better by exploring the dynamic between the two heroes and introducing David Collings as Sanders who maybe competing for the friendship of Litefoot in the first story. Then series2 just gets better and better.

I already own (and have listened to) The Mahogany Murderers, Voyage to Venus, and Voyage to the New World. Also the one with Strax.
Just haven't dug into the box sets yet.

Still trying to decide what, if anything, I should buy. (Don't say series 1, if it's permanently reduced, I can save it for another time. )

If you were going to buy just one, other than series 1, which one would you buy?

It worked great. There were little moments of reference that I was missing but it never got in the enjoy of my enjoyment of the stories. However, I think the next Series is going to reference some of the events that I'm missing. I only ended up buying Series 3 & 4 so far this weekend, however I'm still considering buying 5 & 6.

I ended up getting series 3 and 4. Because series 1 is on permanent discount, so I can get it anytime. And my theory is that series 2 is more likely to go on sale again because it's older (maybe it will go on permanent discount sooner, too. ). Besides which, several comments here and there seem to indicate that serie 3 is needed for continuity for the later box sets. A minority of Time Scale reviewers thought the first series 3 story requires previous stories to understand it. Then again, a minority of Time Scale reviewers thought Voyage to the New World and Voyage to Venus require previous stories. But I listened to them both ages ago and enjoyed them without backstory. Besides, with my listening backlog, I may have acquired series 1 and 2 before I get around to listening to series 3 and 4.

I bought series 3 & 4, and meant to buy series 5 & 6 last night. But then I got caught up in getting some work done last night and then went to bed and completely forgot to make my purchase.
