Joker
Cards on the table. It's brilliant.
It's also the most depressing movie I've seen in the cinema that wasn't directed by Todd Solondz. I feel unclean after it, there's a stench, a lingering anger that follows you out of the theatre.
The Scorsese comparisons are indeed all present but here I don't know to what end. Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver was the dark(er) side of John Wayne in The Searchers. Rupert Pupkin in King Of Comedy was the product of celebrity culture. But Joker? He's....I don't know. He could be a product of a society not caring for it's lowest citizens...or he could just be crazy anyway and the setting wouldn't matter. He stands for nothing. He is fighting no cause. He's...almost a force of nature.
A force of nature is also an apt description of Joaquin Phoenix's performance.. You forget seeing the world class actor and within minutes believe you are watching Arthur Fleck. I adored Lynne Ramsey's You Were Never Really Here last year in which Phoenix also plays a dark psychotic on the brink in the city, while tending for his mother yet what Phoenix gives here is even more raw, more visceral than that performance. He's breathtaking. He moves like a ballet dancer crossed with a panther.
I can't stress enough how much this isn't a "comic book film" or a "Batman spinoff" - there will be people going to this who are expecting something very, very different. Anyone thinking their kids would like a Joker movie? Be careful - this film has sharp edges. A 15 rating on paper but I'm 34 and it made me feel voyeuristic and wretched.
There's no light at the end of the tunnel with this. It's opressive and suffocating yet spellbinding and intoxicating at the same time. I honestly don't think I could recommend it to anyone - it's so bleak I think I'd feel responsible for their welfare.
Sometimes......you just have to laugh. That's life!

^ Gotta be honest, the ads did nothing for me and I'm sick to death of Joker stories. I'm a gigantic Batman fan, and I'm giving this movie a wide berth.

As I say...going into it as a Batman movie is only going to end in disappointment. It's not even a Joker film, really. It's an Arthur Fleck film. If you called his alter ego something else and didn't set this in Gotham it could be completely outside DC. Watch it as a film, not as a comic book film and you'll get a lot more out of it. It's only superficially related to Killing Joke or Dark Knight Returns. It's completely fresh. Once you see it...you'll be perplexed as to how to advertise it too. It's not audience friendly marketable cinema, quite ironically given the massive box office. I think that's reflected in the reception. I hate the "people either love it or hate it" thing as someone always says "I'm in the middle, contradicting the premise but....it's kinda a love it or hate it marmite film. There were people in the cinema who were visibly repulsed by the tone of the film which smothers you gradually.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with Davy G but Joker was a outstanding movie, this was a dark slow burner but had me gripped from start to finish.
I'm a bipolar/manic depressive & wasn't at all offended by the movie in fact it brilliantly showcases the flaws in the mental health system, Arthur's story & how he becomes Joker is believable thanks to Joaquin Phoenix's phenomenal performance who strangely makes you feel empathy for this character there are a few subtle hints to the Batman universe but if your expecting epic action scenes then this ain't the movie for youas this is more a character drama.
5/5.

When Hands Touch
(Provocative Drama set in Germany during WW2 exploring the intense relationship from puberty onwards between a young orphan of mixed race heritage, cared for by a Jewish family, and her neighbour, whose Father (played Christopher Ecclestone) becomes the Commandant and he a Guard of the camp in which she is later interred.)

Another recommendation for Joker. It was absolutely brilliant. More closely resembling a 70's Scorsese film than anything released lately, especially not a "comic book movie". (I am not nearly as well-versed in all things cinema as Davy.) It's an experience more that a film, and I believe a very important one in these times. See it Digi before you make up your mind. I promise you that it will be unlike anything you expected from a Joker film.

I don't care about the origin of The Joker & this looks like an homage to King of Comedy & Taxi Driver. & I've already seen Phoenix play a Travis Bickle like character in the excellent You Were Never Really Here.

I promise you that it will be unlike anything you expected from a Joker film. Right, I can see how what I wrote was poorly worded. I meant the two items as separate complaints/'push' factors. 1) As a hardcore Batman fan, I am sick to death of anything to do with the Joker and would be over the moon if DC/WB put a moratorium on any Joker-related stuff for no less than 10 years. Separately and independently of that:2) I think the movie, as its own entity having nothing to do with anything comic-y, looks boring as hell, and actually pretty profoundly unappealing. I've made the observation before (I might've even made it here at DU somewhere) that the ads for this movie, to me, were about as exciting as a car insurance commercial. Did not appeal to me in the slightest. I also seriously question the wisdom of making a 'poor, put-upon, picked-upon white guy understandably becomes a murderer' movie in the present climate. I'm not going to say nobody can make this movie or see this movie, of course not. Each their own and all that. I just think it's in incredibly poor taste. Oh and uh...more on-topic: Star Trek: First Contact

Joker (Interesting film reminded me of Taxi Driver or Falling Down is it slow build to madness or its the last straw I've snapped Smash it all! approach? Whichever way I'd argue it didn't need the central hook to work as Joaquin Phoenix never gives a predictable performance anyway so the study of how this character is been enough without the Paternity Issue plot point.) I'm all for telling new stories but this right here is the reason I have no interest in seeing Joker. I saw the MovieBitches review and I came up to the conclusion that this movie was going to be less Joker and more "LoOk At WhAt SoCiEtY hAs DoNe" and considering the utter contempt I feel for the director in the first place and the pedestal the character is put on by people i have no desire to know exist, the movie was a hard "Nope" for me. Birds of Prey looks awesome though.

Yesterday I watched 'Joker' (You could almost smell the marmite reviews... 'I enjoyed it fine, for the record) and 'The Titfield Thunderbolt', a childhood favourite of mine.
Am currently watching the 'remake' of 'The Railway Children' (with Jenny Agutter as the mother) before heading out for the evening.

Christine (2016) An intriguing telling of the shocking true life story
We're the Millers Lol cut for excessive kissing and the striptease was cut to crap, but the swearing was intact lol
Hitchcock Really enjoyed this. what a cast
Pixels Meh. and that final post credits scene was so unneeded
Jackie Apart from Natalie Portman's accent, I really enjoyed it
Despicable Me Fun as Hell
Despicable Me 3 A great third film. Weird how they skipped number 2 when showing them
Red Eye Really Tense, just spoilt by the wham bam ending
Welcome to the Punch Waiting for a sequel that never came
Criminal A lot better than I expected.
The Campaign Laughed my ass off, even though one of the major plot points was edited due to censorship
Die Hard 4.0 The last good Die Hard film
just so you guys know, I watched these at the Hotel in Morocco. Now they are fine with showing gore and swearing at all times of the day, but any kiss that lingers past 2 seconds gets cut. Which makes some films even funnier
