Whose best? Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeremy Brett or Jonny Lee Miller?

It will always be Benedict Cumberbatch for me. I think he's like the definitive Sherlock and now I can't imagine anyone else in the part.

Jeremy Brett combined so much from the books in his performance. He seemed so true to the character

None of the above? Bear in mind, even Basil Rathbone played Sherlock Holmes on television (although it wasn't supposed to be awfully good, being an Adrian Conan Doyle story, and I don't know if it survives).

Brett all the way. (Nick's actually my second fave Holmes after Jeremy Brett) Cumberbatch and Miller seem equal but different.

out of the 3 you name only one is playing Sherlock Holmes....the other are re-imaginings and imitations
so no contest Jeremy Brett, he is the only one playing Conan-Doyle's Sherlock Holmes
for me Cumberbatch is just ok in the part, I actually think freeman give a better performance although neither were good in the travesty that was the Christmas special.
I know elementary has it's fans but nothing about it appeals to me, have only seen 2 episodes but that was enough to say that it was about as far removed for Sherlock Holmes as to make it irrelevant.
will stick with the BBC's audio productions (Merrison Williams) never better in any other medium IMO although I have a soft spot for the Robert Downey Jr movies.

Jeremy Brett lived and breathed that role, it seems only fair that he's at the top of my list aside Basil Rathbone's film incarnation personally.

Of the options Brett but my personal favourite is Clive Merrison of the BBC Audio adaptations.

I rather like Miller, he plays Holmes as a man whose life has literally shattered , he went past "using drugs to alleviate boredom" to "using drugs to escape reality/destroy himself" prior to the show and is rebuilding himself as a better man, keeping only the bits of his old self his moral code approves of (he jokes at one point life was easier whn he was a misanthrope because he didn't care about people). Also, Natalie Dormer plays Irene Adler in full vamp mode, which is entirely appreciated by me.

For TV Holmes... Jeremy Brett by a country mile! Nobody else comes anywhere near Brett's performances as Sherlock Holmes IMO.

Brett is brilliant and is probably the definitive Holmes. I like Cumberbatch a lot, too, and I'm a fan of Peter Cushing's take on the character as well.

Lucy Lu is a major distraction, and not in a "Miranda Raison" sort of way, but the rest of the cast is good, and once the writers realise they need to focus on Sherlock and not "Sherlock through the lens of Watson" it does pick up.

I do like Rupert Everett's take as well.
Matt Frewer i think was trying to be a cross between Cushing and Rathbone

Rathbone is the one that introduced me to the detective stories, Brett is rather stunning and dark, so takes the pole position but Cumberbatch as taken this to a new level, but whether it has enough scope given the potential limited amount that will be produced then it has to be Mr Brett.

Of the ptions given? Brett, by far. Though that merely speaks to how wnderful he was in the rle as I also consider Cumberbatch to be absolutely wonderful as well. I don't care much for Elementary though Miller is the best thing in it. He would never be in my thoughts for the best Holmes though. He's fine but compared to Brett and Cumberbatch he's not in that league. To be fair to him, he's given a quite generic show to work in wheras Brett had the wonderful Conan Doyle canon and Cumberbatch has had some of the best work Moffat and Gattis have ever done. I dare say if Miller had those advantages, he'd be further ahead in my thoughts.
To mention a few not in the poll - ad t see no love at all for the the wonderful Douglas Wilmer BBC Holmes. I bought the boxset of his (remaining) stories that the BFI put out and he's fantastic in the role. Peter Cushing took over (he'd already done a Hammer film version of Baskervilles) and I've got his episodes too (again - the ones that weren't junked, it wasn't just Who that suffered!) and he brings something fascinating to it as well. One that was more a supporting role but had hints that he could have been great in the lead was the Holmes that Jonathan Pryce played in the Baker Street Irregulars. All of these are on DVD and well worth buying. Especially the Wilmer version which is just essential for any Holmes collection.
I didn't like the Beeb's attempts with Richard Roxburgh (who spent much of the late 90s and early 2000s stinking up everything he was in) and Rupert Everett. They felt like cosplay Holmes and neither of them had anything but the most superficial aspects of the character. I also didn't get on well with the Ronald (son of Leslie) Howard version from the 50s. They decided to prtray Holmes as a pleasant eager chap and honestly, they may as well have made a new show as it didn't feel like Holmes but in an era not long after Rathbone's films and in the early days of TV, I guess it's seminal in its own way.
On audio....sorry Nick, but Clive Merrison has you bested in every possible way. He's the Brett of audio Holmes. I think the best move Bf made with their Holmes range is writing new stories. That period where Nick did the classics invited comparison with the Merrison's too easily and it was no contest. Nw, with his own stories and bosets, Nick's version gets a chance to do his own thing. I still don't think he's a great Holmes but, like Jonny Lee Miller, he's well-rounded and perfectly fine.
