Considering the praise the most recent Main Range release (discussed here, spoilers from the start of page 3) is getting and the time of year, lets park the Chrysler, or the Bentley, grab a slice of plum pudding (it wouldn't be Christmas without it) and dust this off.

Considering the praise the most recent Main Range release (discussed here, spoilers from the start of page 3) is getting and the time of year, lets park the Chrysler, or the Bentley, grab a slice of plum pudding (it wouldn't be Christmas without it) and dust this off. Chimes is one of those rare occasions where the glowing reputation of something continues to be thoroughly justified, in my view. Like The Holy Terror before it, this works on an emotional level, a 'scary' level, a surreal level, and a silly level. Classic Doctor Who, in fact. Russell Stone's music (where is he now?) is entirely fitting, Barnaby Edwards' direction is peerless and all the performances are great. I love it, in case you can't tell. And it has become a favourite Christmas story too. If I had to pick an issue all these years in retrospect, is that the ending is so much a part of the ongoing Charley Pollard. It's not entirely standalone. That's not really an issue, though, is it? At the time, as part of that second official Big Finish 8th Doctor series, the ongoing arc was pleasing, now perhaps not so much. As I say, that's not an issue really, just the nearest thing I have to one ... 15 years later!

I'll be listening to it again on Christmas Eve (as I have done since meeting Rob Shearman at a book signing a few years ago)

It is a good mystery story but now for me Static has eclipsed it

It is a good mystery story but now for me Static has eclipsed it Yeah, I can see the argument for that. I think at this point there's kind of a nostalgia factor in Chimes, at least for me. I believe it was the first 4 part MR story I could get my kids to listen to the whole way through, and we still listen to it every year at Chirstmas. And we don't even celebrate Christmas!! But Static is fantastic. And the added layer of a very real threat to a companion just makes it that much more intense and wonderful.

The horror is very effective, and both are very, very strong stories.

Quite agree with you both are great stories but now Static has earned more listens but not as many as Magic Mousetrap that simply wonβt be beat in relistens for me but both Magic and Static equal with Chimes for visualisation in my mind

Without a doubt, a fantastic story. Can't really say anymore than that.
It works on so many levels - the haunted house, the murder mystery, the issues with the British class system, friendships and secrets. There's so much in this, it just rewards several listens. Clever and complex.
McGann is good in this. If this was remade for TV, I think Capaldi's Doctor would suit here as well. Lots of parallels with The Lodger here.
Lockdown has also made this one more interesting as well - it's reminiscent how most of us probably feel - trapped.

Now I Must've done a comment /thoughts Post on this before but dashed if i find it.
Anyway another Classic by Shearmen. Deceptively simple with some awesome performance and its arguable the best example of the consequences of what the overall story arc is leading toward.
