Hello again.
My name is Sam Tyler and I've really enjoyed series 1 of Life on Mars. I missed this first time around. I thought I'd give it a go. Excellent. It's a bit like The Sweeney but with that knowledge of modern policing brought in by John Simm's character. The characters are well drawn and the sci fi element gives proceedings a bit of mystery. The cases are sometimes predictable but not always. I was born in 1973, so it is fascinating to see how different things were 46 years ago. The attitudes prevalent in the Seventies show how far we've come. Yet, in some ways things are still the same. You still have people online peddling racist, sexist, homophobic and threatening opinions through the protection of anonymous tweets and posts. The finale of season 1 was heartbreaking and so on I go to season 2.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Trying to give some more science fiction a go . Decided to watch the pilot episode to the now long gone series ‘Warehouse 13’ My God, this was a pain to sit through. The majority of the acting is atrocious and the comic relief character is about as amusing as being clocked in the jaw with a swift right hook. I rather like the concept but I’m not sure if I will continue with this. For any fans of the series who I have probably offended, does it get any better? I have not seen the show since it concluded its run (however many years ago that was), but I do remember it being a lot of fun. The pilot episodes of most TV shows are crap. They have to world-build, introduce concepts, and introduce characters, as well as try to tell a story, often within a 42ish-minute episode. Most TV shows, in my experience, just can’t do it. I usually give a show 4 or 5 episodes before casting judgement. My eldest raved about Warehouse 13 so I sat down and watched the first few episodes with them. I didn’t enjoy it either: just felt like too many other shows all wrapped into one with no clue about how to be original.

The Enemy Within Episode 1 An okay show. Only has 13 episodes so sure it'll be a breeze to go through. Love the fact that 5USA spoiled one of the "twists" in the adverts for the show lol

Witcher.....
Strange way to tell a story, spent more time confused than really enjoying it.
It was a good try at a decent fantasy series but the time jumping spoilt it for me and the final episode felt like it was from a different series with all these mage that we had not seen before and The threads not quite telling a cohesive story........
Liked it but felt like watching the game without the fun of actually playing it........
Definitely worth watching

The Twilight Zone ‘Walking Distance’ An absolutely beautiful and moving piece which only gets better with age. Easily one of Rod Serling’s finest works.

Star Trek: Is There In Truth No Beauty?, Spectre Of The Gun and Day Of The Dove
At last a bit of an upturn in quality, but I fear it won’t last.

Ah...you've still got a bit of a way to go until The Way To Eden... ...though by the time season 3 was shown on the BBC back in the seventies it was less awe at the story and more weary resignation that Shatner was undoubtedly going to be snogging the face off the scantily clad female guest star that week...(admittedly this was a few years before I discovered the pleasures of that particular activity..😁)

Dr. Terribles House Of Horrible
One of Steve Coogan's forgotten shows between Partride revivals in the late 90s, early 2000s. It's an anthology spoof of Hammer and Amicus films, there's one ep here that has quite a bit of Who referencing. It's a cross between Hammer's Terror Of The Tongs and Talons Of Weng Chiang. The Fu Manchu/Li S'en Chang villain here is played in full yellowface by Mark Gattis and is FULL of OTT racism parodying the above. It really wouldn't fly now, even as parody. Really funny though but hardly BBC2 primetime material now! There's a giant crab in the sewers to rival Talon's giant rat, and one line "One of us...is yellow" is lifted word for word.
Made me wonder if Coogan is a Who fan, never really heard him talk about it. He'd be a very high profile guest star for the show sometime too.

The Witcher: episodes 1 & 2
There’s a lot for a serious lover of fantasy to enjoy here. Unfortunately it isn’t paired with anything that a lover of good television might like.

Hello again.
Well the Gene Genie rides off into the sunset. Just watched season 2 of Life on Mars and all three seasons of Ashes to Ashes, the sequel set in the Eighties. Really enjoyed this. I'm not sure it would get comissioned today, the language and attitudes would probably just be too far away from what's currently acceptable on tv. It really is a strange beast, part police procedural, part mystery and part sci-fi/supernatural. that is what makes it special. The performances and characterisations are excellent. The characters develop over the five series. John Simm and Keeley Hawes are really effective foils for Phillip Glenister's combative Gene Hunt.
The soundtrack is part of the atmosphere too, as is the comedic nods to popular culture. Currently on BBC Iplayer, rev up the Quattro and give it a go. It drags you in from the first episode and never gives up until the final scene.

Hello again.
I think the problem with Ashes to Ashes may have been that in series 1 the writers decided to have the comedic element more prevalent. Alex doesn't take her new surroundings at all seriously. Indeed, she treats Gene as an irrelevence. This alienated fans of the original. I didn't actually see the original Life on Mars until a couple of weeks ago. So, I saw Ashes to Ashes in 2008, as a new series which I stuck with. It is only by watching Life on Mars followed by Ashes to Ashes that you get the full picture. Series 2 and particularly series 3 bring back the harder edge of the original. Daniel May in series 3 is particularly good. You see real character development for Ray and Chris and Shaz and Gene.
Viewed as a whole, it is a fascinating examination of policing attitudes and practices in the past. Both series offer a fresh angle on the police procedural. I shows the trials and temptations of being a police officer through a variety of storylines. It also deals with that age old question of how do you police the police and how do you prevent corruption?
