The 1995 box office disaster that killed pirates films until Depp, as well as Geena Davis' career. But is it really a terrible film?

no it ok, as above the leads are miscast but it's not a bad action film bit dated these days but that's not such a bad thing at least there is no dodgy CGI to kill it.
its a case of where the critics killed the movie, with budget overspends, director/producer conflicts & pirates were not looked upon with any great fondness (treasure island movie a few years previous was renamed because ....who wants a pirate movie) they were looking for this to fail....and it did
but like many of these flop blockbusters (john carter, waterworld, lone ranger) the movie is not without flaws, but its pretty enjoyable they were just never going to make the money back so the critics like to say they fail on every count.
watch it, its certainly better than its reputation.

Sure it's Overblown, but for Cheesy action fair its not bad. Sure Modine is badly Miscast and Davies isnt quite there but I'd watch it again.

Just to clarify, I have seen it. Twice, and even did a video review of it way back when. In short, Amazing score and produciton values, but the leads and a script that I could teach a How Not To Write Class on mess it up.

Is it that bad? No not really. As noted, miscast and with a problematic screenplay. It certainly isn't the worst movie Renny Harlin directed.

I wouldn't necessarily say the critics killed the film. It got poor reviews but so do a great many films that still go on to make money. There's some interesting comments from Renny Harlin on the Wikipedia page that point to where the film really failed.
In a radio interview in 2011, Harlin discussed the film's box office failure. He pointed out that Carolco was already in ruin before shooting even began, but had to make the film since financing from foreign investors was already in place. MGM, the film's distributor, was in the process of being sold and thus could not devote itself into financing a marketing campaign for the film.[19] Carolco filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy a month before Cutthroat Island's release.[20]
No real marketing campaign and the company in bankruptcy as the film was being released, for it to succeed the film would have had to be phenomenal and get real word of mouth acclaim.
