Tax check has arrived and I want to try something I've never seen before. So the collected Doomwatch series, yes or no? The film version. yes or no?

Tax check has arrived and I want to try something I've never seen before. So the collected Doomwatch series, yes or no? The film version. yes or no? 100%. The series is absolutely fantastic (from what remains at least!). Doctor Quist is a great lead character and his relationship with John Ridge is pretty cool - they work together but they're constantly at each other's throats. What I like about it is whilethe tone is pretty 70s with the environmental messages and the criticism of bureaucracy but the plot themselves are often very fun, 50's b-movie inspired. Killer chocolate liqueur anyone? You'll recognise a lot of the themes, cast and production staff from Doctor Who - Pat Troughton even pops up. The film is nowhere near as essential but its solid enough. What separates the film from the likes of Quatermass or Doctor Who is that the TV stars (John Paul and Simon Oates) reprise their roles in the film rather than have their tv eps remade with new actors. In the film though they're supporting characters as Ian Bannen and Judy Geeson's new characters take centre stage. If you have to make a choice then the movie can wait. I don't know how readily available this is Stateside but the BFI's release of Out Of The Unknown is one of the truly great boxsets released in the past 5 years and given your taste for 60s and 70s British genre would be right up your alley. Some of the greats of sci-fi wrote for it - from Asimov to Ballard and Wyndham. Like Doomwatch it remains a victim of wiping policies but being an anthology series it's not as though any backstory is lost with the missing eps. www.amazon.co.uk/d/DVD-Blu-ray/Out-7-Disc-Set-Terence-Morgan/B00KF9LPBO/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1487234659&sr=1-1&keywords=out+of+the+unknown

Mmm. Like The X-Files or Quatermass, Doomwatch is one of those series definitely worth watching to see where all the time-honoured and much-lauded ideas seen in later productions flowed from.

I quite liked the film version too. Then again, I'm a fan of the "we don't like strangers 'round 'ere" kind of films anyway.
