Hey everyone,
I thought this might be an intresting conversation topic: what if Big Finish remade Dark Shadows (using the Bloodlust treatment)? I know there was a US pilot in 2007 that wasn't picked up (and a nineties remake?), but it'd be an intresting approach.

The pilot was in 2004.

They would need to not rehash storylines from the original series, which was one of the flaws of the '91 series. It got interesting when it broke away from story beats, like having the scenes in the present day with Phyllis Wick while Vicki was in the past. The problem is that the original series covered so many kinds of stories that it would be difficult not to do this.

I don't think you can get away with not telling the Barnabas storyline as for many people that *is* Dark Shadows, but I'd certainly hold it back until about quarter/midway though the series. Let people get to know the characters and so on first, get to know who he was before the cousin from England turns up.
And Julia has to be done right. The 1991 version is such a clumsy recreation of the character it makes my blood boil.

I find it very odd how keen the 1991 series and the 2004 pilot are to have Julia established in the first episode. And say what you like about 1991 Julia, at least she ain't 2004 Julia.

2004 Julia was just Kelly Hu dressed as a Doctor, even if it went to series I really don't think she could have gone on to be much of a character. If you watched it fresh, I'm not even sure you'd know she was supposed to be a main character, just the doctor working in the hospital in that one ep.
What would it be like in 2017? Probably skewing even younger with even younger stars. Take Teen Wolf and all the CW super-shows for an example.

That can work though - take 2004 Willie Loomis - admittedly he should have been scruffier to begin with - and the process in an actual series should take a few episodes - but it's a great idea that Barnabas's effect on Willie would have a side effect that takes him out of his loser shell and makes him seem much more attractive and confident, but still in thrall to Barnabas. In the 21st Century that's a better take than Barnabas's whipping boy. And the writers can always find a way to knock that confidence later.
But, for gawd's sake, call him Bill Loomis this time.

One of the few things I really liked about the Tim Burton film was Helena Bonham Carter's version of Julia Hoffman. To extend the fantasy (or maybe it isn't!) of BF remaking Dark Shadows, I would love Bonham Carter to be in it. I think she would be a lot of fun as a world-weary, perpetually hungover version of the character.

BTW, if there was a new version...it should be Ryan Murphy that does it. Pitch it between American Horror Story and Feud...job done. Plus it could mean Jessica Lange as Liz, Dennis O'Hare as Roger, Lily Rabe as Angelique, Kathy Bates as Mrs Johnson, Sarah Paulson as Maggie, Finn Witrock as Willie, Evan Peters as Quentin, Joseph Fiennes as Barnabas, Susan Sarandon as Julia....it's casting itself with Murphy regulars already.

Was the character of Julia Hoffman in the Tim Burton movie? Helena Bonham Carter, I think the last thing she did with Tim before they split and he got custody of Johnny Depp.

Ever since KLS said she was seen for Elizabeth in 2004, I've been disappointed that didn't pay off.

I said this in a podcast a few years ago, but I honestly think Dark Shadows needs the "Next Generation" treatment. A new set of Collins in the house, descendants of the original characters having new experiences.
Some of the original surviving cast could return as other characters, or the ghosts of their old characters, etc.
It worked extremely well for Star Trek, which once upon a time it was thought "No one will ever accept anyone other than Kirk, Spock and McCoy!" - but the new cast and show became extremely popular.
That being said, I'm not sure audio would be my first choice to create such a new offshoot of the franchise. But it could work.
