Ist lot End 11:59 PM Monday 14th Augest
Big Finish - we love summer! Try some of our handpicked Big Finish releases, with 20% off and some glowing recommendations from the Big Finish team.
From today until the 14th August, you can save 20% off some of our favourite stories. We asked the whole Big Finish team what they would recommend to listen to on a summer holiday - the responses were varied and wonderful! We look at the first batch of recommendations.
1 - The Prisoner Volume 1
‘I’m not a number. I’m a free man!’
January 16th, 1967... A secret agent resigns, then wakes up to find himself imprisoned in ‘The Village’ — a bizarre community with a cheery veneer, but an underbelly of mystery and threat. All occupants of The Village have numbers instead of names, with our secret agent forced to accept the mantel of Number Six.
Kris Griffin, Marketing Consultant (@kristhescript)
“Having spent some fantastic summer moment in Portmeirion, there's no better summer recommendation than our very own Prisoner volume one box set. Immerse yourself in the village, let the soundscape and drama unfold around you and brace yourself for Volume Two… (out this month)”
Mark Plastow, Graphic Designer (@sugarytea)
“A marvellous interpretation of a classic with a barnstorming central performance.”
Starring Mark Elstob, John Standing, Celia Imrie, Ramon Tikaram and Michael Cochrane, you can pick up Volume 1, now available at £32 on CD or £28 on download.
2 - Doctor Who Companion Chronicles - The Scorchies
Paddy Freeland, Marketing Executive (@paddyfreeland)
“Whilst working my way through the Big Finish catalogue, this story with the lovely Jo and these colourful critters caught my eye. When I told the team I hadn’t heard it yet, they chased me down with torches and pitchforks! It has an amazing performance from Katy Manning, with her passion, care and ingenuity, and once you hear the Scorchies sing, you’ll never watch Sesame Street in the same way again… Reminded me of summer holidays watching cartoons - perfect!”
Starring Katy Manning as Jo, and Melvyn Hayes as The Scorchies, this release is now available at £7.19 on CD or £6.39 on download
3. Doctor Who Main Range - Red Dawn
Ares One: NASA's first manned mission to the dead planet Mars. But is Mars as dead as it seems?
While the NASA team investigate an 'anomaly' on the planet's surface, the Doctor and Peri find themselves inside a strange alien building. What is its purpose? And what is frozen inside the blocks of ice that guard the doorways? If the Doctor has a sense of deja-vu, it's because he's about to meet some old adversaries, as well as some new ones…
Andrew Smith, Writer (@andr3wsmith)
“Number 8 in the Doctor Who Main Range, released in 2000, Red Dawn remains one of my all-time favourite Big Finish releases. And what better time to become (re)acquainted with it than after the telly broadcast of the cracking Ice Warriors story The Empress of Mars? In Red Dawn, the 5th Doctor and companions also find Ice Warriors in tomb-like chambers under the surface of Mars. The story is one that I can clearly imagine having been produced in BBC TV studios in the 80s, and presents the Ice Warriors in an interesting and compelling way, filling in some of their cultural back story.”
Starring Peter Davison and Nicola Bryant, and as one of the earliest Big Finish releases, you can now download this tale for just 99p!
4 - Jago & Litefoot Series 9
Ian Atkins, Production Executive
“They get to go on their holidays, so why don't we?”
Lisa Bowerman, First Lady of Big Finish (@thelisabowerman)
“All aboard the Fata Morgana! Perfect listening for a cruise…”
With Christopher Benjamin and the late and much missed Trevor Baxter, pick up Series 9 of Jago & Litefoot on CD at £28 or download at £24.
5 - Doctor Who Companion Chronicles - The First Doctor - Volume 2 - Across the Darkened City
David Richardson, Senior Producer (@richardsonbf)
“In my view, an absolute classic Dalek story, - dark, mesmerising, with the focus almost entirely set on Steven Taylor and one ruined Dalek. Play it again and again.”
Benji Clifford, Sound Designer (@la_bonj)
“A beautifully crafted journey back to the 1960s! Lovely stuff!”
This adventure, with Peter Purves as Steven Taylor, is available in The First Doctor - Volume 2 boxset, and also stars Maureen O’Brien, Anneke Wills and Elliot Chapman. Grab it today at £20 on CD or £16 on download.
6 - Survivors Series 3
David Richardson, Senior Producer (@richardsonbf)
“A very sobering box set to make, in which a white supremacist extremist thug tries to take control in a world devastated by plague. Paul Thornley was so convincing and upsetting as Vinnie - some dark listening for a bright summer day.”
Joseph Lidster, Writer (@joelidster)
“Survivors - all of it! The series just feels so different to everything else Big Finish produces. It’s dark without being unpleasant, scary but also there’s a real sense of warmth to it. Strong characters and great performances as well!”
Starring Carolyn Seymour, Richard Heffer, Chase Masterson, John Banks, Andrew French, Paul Thornley and James Joyce, get Survivors Series 3 for £24 or £20 on Download.

We asked the whole Big Finish team what they would recommend listening to on a summer holiday - the responses were varied and wonderful!
This is our second batch of summer recommendations, but just in case you missed the first wave, you’ll find them at the bottom of this story.
1 - Treasure Island
Starring Tom Baker as Long John Silver/Captain Flint, Nicholas Farrell as our Narrator and Edward Holtom as Jim Hawkins.
When young Jim Hawkins unexpectedly inherits a treasure map, he little knows what adventures await him. Pursued by pirates, betrayed by friends and beset by skulduggery, Jim must brave high seas and low cunning before he reaches the shores of Treasure Island.
His fellow treasure-hunters include the inflexible Captain Smollett, the indefatigable Doctor Livesey and the irrepressible Squire Trelawney. And then there's the ship's cook: a seafaring man with one leg who goes by the name of Long John Silver…
Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure is brought thrillingly to life in this brand new full-cast audiobook adaptation, written and directed by Barnaby Edwards.
Martin Montague, Sound Designer (@martinm_Media):
“A wonderful summertime listen. Barnaby's direction is spot on, Tom Baker revels in playing a non-Doctor role, and Howard Carter's sound design is first class and his music is beautiful and memorable.”
2 - The Avengers: Comic Strip Adaptations Vol 1
The Avengers - Steed & Mrs Peel re-creates in audio the comic strips from the 1960s, as well as reprinting the material itself as a new graphic novel starring Julian Wadham and Olivia Poulet as Steed and Mrs Peel.
1. Return to Castle De'ath by Simon Barnard and Paul Morris
Steed is left hanging, Emma pays the piper.
Steed and Peel return to the scene of an earlier adventure to find it much changed. Now a ski-resort, Castle De'ath is playing host to many new visitors - including a wealthy Prince targeted by assassins.
Assigned as bodyguards, the Avengers have to keep the Prince alive and discover which of the Castle's guests are behind the murderous plot - before they succumb to it themselves.
2. The Miser by Simon Barnard and Paul Morris
Steed has a nasty scare, Emma has a pressing engagement
When the phrase 'sleeper train' takes on a very literal meaning, Steed and Peel witness the first action of The Miser, a terrifying extortionist. The race is on to stop his ambitious scheme - but in this case, appearances can be deceptive.
3. The Golden Dresses by Paul Magrs
Emma hits the heights of fashion, Steed plumbs the very depths.
The ladies of society can't get enough of Madame Zingara's Golden Dresses. Especially now their husbands have gone missing.
Steed and Peel look into the world of haute couture to discover the dark secret of this latest craze. Can they pull it off with style?
4. The Norse Code by John Dorney
Steed has the horns of a dilemma, Emma milks her moment.
An agent has gone missing whilst holidaying in the Norfolk Broads. With an American nuclear bomb being stored in the region, Steed and Peel can't take any risks. But the last thing they expect to find on their boating trip is a Norse longboat. What are Vikings doing in East Anglia?
Ian Atkins, Production Exec
“Really bright, jolly, cheerful stuff: everything you look for in a summer holiday.”
3 - Blake's 7 Liberator Chronicles Vol 5
Starring a mix of original cast and some familiar faces, Gareth Thomas, Paul Darrow, Sally Knyvette, Jacqueline Pearce and Louise Jameson, a highlighted part of this release is the first story, “Logic” by Simon Guerrier.
Pol Astat Constable is an ordinary woman living an ordinary life in a domed city on Earth. Her very ordinary job involves looking for errors of logic in computer code.
Then one day an intruder breaks into her rooms and changes everything forever. His name is Kerr Avon, and he is taking her outside to face a terrible secret...
Pol's life is ordinary no more.
David Richardson, Senior Producer (@richardsonbf)
“I loved Simon Guerrier’s script for this, in which Louise Jameson takes centre stage as an Earth woman called Pol. One that I want to revisit again and again.”
4 - Dark Shadows, Dreams of Long Ago
All new, full-cast audio dramas and talking-books on CD and download, based on the classic gothic drama serial. Four tales of horror, romance and intrigue…
The Reflected Man by Alan Ronald
Sabrina Jennings is broken. Her husband is dead and her life means nothing. Alone in the city of New York she believes that her life can’t get any worse. But she is about to discover that there’s always something darker… hiding in the darkness…
Old Acquaintance by Matthew Waterhouse
New Years Eve, 1971 and Quentin Collins is celebrating in the Blue Whale. But something is coming for him… Something he first met in a Welsh village in 1914. Will the people of Collinsport survive to see 1972?
Devil’s Rock by Kate Webster
Barnabas Collins and Willie Loomis are beginning a journey. A journey that they hope will lead them to their old friend, Julia Hoffman. But, on this night, they are about to discover that Collinsport isn’t the only town in Maine to have a dark, terrible secret.
Cobwebs by Aaron Lamont
Something is very wrong at Windcliff Sanitarium. Sebastian Shaw wakes from a nightmare, alone. There are no doctors... no nurses... just a tiny little spider weaving its web on his wall. And outside, in the hospital corridors, the Burned Man is calling for him again.
Joseph Lidster, Writer (@joelidster)
“I’m really proud of our short story collections. Dreams of Long Ago features stories by Matthew Waterhouse and Aaron Lamont as well as by new writers Alan Ronald and Kate Webster. There’s a gorgeous small story about grief and love, a huge epic tale about an old legend coming to life, a traditional, deliciously dark story about a village’s horrific tradition and then what can only be described as a nightmarish one-man play about a patient in a mental institute talking to a spider. It’s a real mix of stories with stunning sound design and music and, biased though I might be, I think it’s a real Big Finish highlight.”
5 - Doctor Who: The English Way of Death
A novel adaptation starring Tom Baker, Lalla Ward and John Leeson.
London, in the summer heatwave of 1930.
The Doctor is visiting with Romana and K9 in order to return some library books, but traces of time pollution may change his plans. A seaside hut holds a strange secret. A biscuit millionaire is hiring assassins. Deadly butlers and solicitors stalk the streets.
There is an odd smell in the air. And it might just mean the death of everyone on the planet.
Originally written by Gareth Roberts, this audio version was adapted by John Dorney and directed by Nicholas Briggs.
Guy Adams, Writer (@guyadamsauthor)
“The Fourth Doctor and Romana, sun, seaside and terrible alien threats that might wipe out all life on the planet. That sums up most of my childhood holidays and, I’m sure, yours too.”
6 - The Prisoner Volume 1
‘I’m not a number. I’m a free man!’
January 16th, 1967... A secret agent resigns, then wakes up to find himself imprisoned in ‘The Village’ — a bizarre community with a cheery veneer, but an underbelly of mystery and threat. Not much sooner, given how fast some things go up for sale these days.

I think we are looking at one of the effects of Big Finish expansion. The more ranges they start up, the more valuable storage space becomes.

Quite possibly. All I know is that back when it seemed like most things would be around for a couple of years before they appeared on sale, I didn't feel this way, but with things now seemingly routinely going on sale in less than half that amount of time after their initial release, I can't help but often feel like I could have just as easily waited a bit longer on most releases. Especially as I've spent, and continue to spend, so much on Big Finish to begin with, so I'm not exactly short of listening options in the meantime.
Anyway I'm not trying to make a big thing of this, ultimately I make my own choices and I live with the outcomes, whatever they may be, I was mostly just idly pondering out loud, that's all.

No think you are right. There does seem to be a reduced time between items being released and then coming up on sale. I still think the big eye opener was when the 1st 50 went on sale and then out of print. Anyway, as has been noted above, we get things when they come out and sometimes that is the main thing a fan is looking for.

I would never have the patience to wait for a sale, not knowing when or if it might happen. However, for me, sales allow me to dip into ranges I might not otherwise have bothered with. I'm just BF's toy! I'm hoping there's a bit of Torchwood coming up, if anyone's reading ... ?

Some days I wonder why I paid full price for, well, almost everything... And actually looking at the list, wow. One item released this past May and one item released this past June. That is quick for a reduction.

They still seem to wait two years before significant price reductions though, and it's still rare for a set to go on sale earlier. At 20% off, most titles would still cost more than the pre-order price.
It's nice to get the occasional exception, like Who Killed Toby Kinsella, half price after just over a year, but against that I have a whole list of products that have never been reduced in the two years I've been buying Big Finish, like Night of the Stormcrow.
So it's a gamble either way, and I guess it depends how deep your pockets are and how choosy you are about what specific products you want.

What are people's thoughts on Treasure Island? I passed the last time it was on sale, but now I'm wondering if I should get it. I wouldn't hesitate - it's been on my shopping list for a while and this is the week I'll buy it with a few pieces of eight off! The chance to hear Tom Baker play one of the finest villains ever written is too good to miss. We know how good the production will be (it's Big Finish after all) and that Barnaby Edwards will have done an excellent adaptation of the novel. For anyone who hasn't read it, it's a classic tale of high adventure on the Spanish Main, not a jolly romp under the Jolly Roger. And for a supposed 'children's story' it would never make it to pre-watershed TV now without substantial cuts! (RLS put in the piratical violence, greed, drinking and smoking but (as he says in the forward) left out the swearing. Different times, different standards. ) I started listening to the trailer but made myself stop just after Long Tom Silver appeared - I want to hear the BF version fresh. #Fifteen men of the crew alive, yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum, we put to sea with seventy-five, yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum...#

I've owned the BF Treasure Island for a while now, but only got around to listening to it just a few days ago. I thought I had read it years ago but after hearing it I don't think so, it was all new to me. And I enjoyed it, well written and played for audio.
