Today apparently marked a year since I was last in a theatre auditorium (barring ushering a comedian a couple of days later). Yeah, I miss it, I miss it...
Whilst it'll probably be a long, long, time before I head down to London again, I live in hope that one day I'll get to see something locally again soon.

This evening I've watched a live-reading of Twelfth Night. Whilst I don't know if I particularly 'loved' it (it did plod along in places because, you know, live-reading), it was a pleasant enough way to spend a Thursday evening & was definitely nice to see Ruby Rose and Nicole Kang in something outside of 'Batwoman'...

I watched “Mathew Bourne’s Car Man”! The only other full Mathew Bourne production I have seen is “Nutcracker!”, I like Car Man a lot. Set the music of the opera/ballet of Carman and loosely inspired by the Postman Always Rings Twice, it tells the story of a mysterious sexy stranger who causes trouble at a garage and dinner in a small US Midwest town in the 1960s. While it wasn’t the most upbeat ballet, it did have some amazing dancing and some seriously sexy eye candy ( Nutcracker this is not)!
Sidenote: I definitely did not expect the scene with the zombie boss though!
Sidenote: No, I definitely won’t dream about this ballet crossing over with the art work in my room tonight😉 Not at all😉

This evening was the first time I've been in the auditorium of a theatre in almost 16months, seeing 'Absurd Person Singular' with my parents, and it was nice, it was nice. Whilst I will say that I'm not strictly a fan of the slightly 'non-ending', it was a pleasant way of spending a couple of hours on the first day of my summer 'holiday' off from work... The fact that it starred our friend Mr Dorney probably helped

Hamlet at the Young Vic. Cush Jumbo superb as the troubled Dane. A lot of other great performances as well.

I'm about halfway through the YouTube vids of the "Very Potter Musical" series, and I gotta say, Lauren Lopez is an absolute treasure as Draco Malfoy.
I can't say they're good musicals, or even funny parodies, though. Maybe if the audio quality were better? Or I were more of a Harry Potter fan? Or if I'd ever been more of a Harry Potter fan? During the great Fantasy Fandom Wars of the early-aughts I was firmly aligned with LOTR, and there wasn't much fraternization across the lines back then.
That said, it is a fascinating window into the HP fandom of the early and mid 2000s, where it was basically seen as an inclusive playground, before Rowling just kind of... destroyed that. It's just really amazing to see just how much these books meant to people back then -- especially considering that this is like 10 years old and many of the cast are now pretty accomplished performers. I gotta say, it's absolutely nuts seeing Dylan Saunders play Dumbledore--a comic relief character with no singing lines--considering how incredibly well he sings as the lead in Twisted and Black Friday, nevermind his big villain song in Starship.

I’ll be in NYC in just over a week. Company, The Lehman Trilogy & Girl From a North County Fair are already on tap. I will probably see at least 2 or 3 more shows. Plus plenty of pizza.

Last night I was at the theatre I volunteer at for (probably) the last time this year for a Santa show and 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'. 'Enjoyed the former (in the second performance 'the man himself' said that my fellow usher and I were 'Gods for the next 10minutes', which was a nice little ego-stroke ) and I absolutely loved the latter. 'Nothing like an evening at TRHPS to confirm that yes, yes you do indeed have... 'A type'. God. Frigging. Dang it!

I was in NYC a couple of weeks ago and saw: David Byrne’s American Utopia The gender flipped revival of Stephen Sonheim’s Company Chicago Slave Play The Lehman Trilogy Girl From the North County Fair
Best thing I saw was Lehman Trilogy. Amazing piece of theatre. My only regret is I didn’t see it twice. American Utopia was amazing in person. The Spike Lee concert film of the show on HBO is great but doesn’t do justice to it live. Slave Play was highly provocative, often very funny and in the end, brutal.

Slave Play closes soon so Funny Girl can move in. Lehman is going to Los Angeles for six weeks in March. After that, who knows. I do know it was recorded by the National Theatre, so I assume it will eventually be available to watch on the NT app. I can’t express how remarkable the show was.

Saw Alan Partridge’s Stratagem last night. It was… not great. Not awful either, but I think it lacks a lot of what makes Partridge so good, which is its excellent continuity, the behind the scenes views and well seeded jokes.
They’d booked the big arenas out and a lot of the show reflected that, with an emphasis on the big screens, song and dance pieces, etc. I don’t think you could’ve comfortably seen and enjoyed everything by attending one night because it’s frantic, both with what you’re trying to digest between Alan, the screens, etc. and the breakneck speed from one element to another with little cohesion.
Some of it worked, namely the material with Lynn that forms a behind the scenes view we all know and love, a lot of it didn’t and that was reflected by the number of empty seats that appeared after the interval. I think it’d have been much better in smaller venues and adopting the This Time or Mid Morning Matters, with Alan trying to promote his Stratagem work in and amongst that.
Not awful, but it’s the worst of the Partridge canon, I think. Having said that, top marks to Steve Coogan; you don’t realise just how much energy he puts into the character until you see him in person.

Bonnie & Clyde; The Musical - Now, I know I'm the type of theatre fan who likes to 'see behind the curtain' and would love to see even the smallest little mistake somewhere, buuuuuut seeing someone (somehow) getting brained by a cash register during a blackout? Not one of them.
Don't get me wrong, it was a great show, glad to have seen it, my parents & I loved it... But yikes.

Saw Joe Lycett in Liverpool last night. Very funny and impeccably plotted and he never missed a beat. Loved Brennan Reece as support too; will definitely be getting tickets for his tour!

Saw David Tennant in Macbeth the Scottish Play. Obviously he’s as good you’d expect him to be, and the production staged the play really interestingly. All audience members got headphones so we got background music and sound effects, as well as the actors whispering. Certainly a worthwhile experience.

Good recovery, but not quite fast enough... {Spoiler} "Macbeth!" (Thanks to Davy for the gif )

I saw the Musical Disney's Lion King this week in Hamburg. It was a great show full of great performances. I especially loved the puppetry and the fluid and uncanny use of puppets in this. The savanna really comes to life! Only issue I had was, that in the beginning, I was wondering why all the songs sounded different. Duh. If you go to a musical show in GERMANY, yes, of course the songs will be in GERMAN.
