I am certainly inclined to believe her. An unfortunate amount of woke liberal guys who are vocal about their support for feminist issues are real jerks in their personal lives. I was talking with a friend about this on Facebook. She says that Whedon's work is forever tarnished for her, that it will have an asterisk next to it like sporting records achieved through the use of banned substances. She said that she'll always wonder whose pants he was trying to get into by writing those stories. I don’t think I agree with her on that aspect. I think there are some problems with Whedon’s feminism (it was fine for his heyday in the 90s, but he hasn’t evolved with the time. Modern feminism has to be intersectional), but his stories have touched a lot of people and I don’t really care if he believes the message behind them. I would be fine if he were nothing more than a philosophical zombie whose mind is a notched plate of reflexes and instincts that always falls in exactly the same way whenever the proper combination is spun. I don't care what he believes in his heart of hearts. I care more about what he does than what he feels. His best stories would have touched just as many lives whether he believed in them or not. Of course, that’s in relation to his art. When we look at what he did in his private life (allegedly, but I’m inclined to take allegations of abuse at face value) is emotionally abuse and manipulate his wife for years, it’s difficult to reconcile those actions with him as an inspirational figure.

It's such a shame that he's so awful in his personal life, because both Whedon himself and Buffy were an inspiration to me, and also one of the reasons why I'm so interested when it comes to working in TV. I guess it shows that you can't put someone on a pedestal because almost everyone is problematic in some shape or form. Though, some of the things he's said on Twitter recently have shown that he's pretty problematic.
It's a shame, but despite this, I'll always love Buffy and Angel and his other works, but he's gone far down in my estimations. I feel sorry for his ex-wife who had to put up with his emotional abuse and manipulations for years. Good to her for speaking out about it.
