1) What if Douglas-Home had won the 1964 election (he lost narrowly)
2) Wilson beats Heath in 1970 (the opinion polls all pointed 2 a Wilson win)
3) Heath gets a deal with the Liberals after the Feb 74 election.
4) Someone else other than Mrs Thatcher becomes Tory leader in 1975.
5) Callaghan calls a general election in October 78 (as he nearly did)
6) Mrs Thatcher holds to the Premiership in November 90 (she was only 4 votes shy of winning on the first ballot)
6) Labour win the 1992 election (maybe in a partnership with Lib Dems)
7) John Smith doesn't die in May 94 so Tony Blair doesn't become Labour leader
I feel their are some great what ifs here

7.
Smith was the best leader of laBour we never had
But I'm not convinced he would have won as he was old labour and Blair presented a different choice for the south...
So. Jon would have lost... by a slim minority. Tried to join with the liberals and then been replaced by Blair

I think he would have won the 1997 election easily - maybe not with Blair's landslide but the Tories were falling to bits by then. They were done anyway, Smith would have finished them. Major was cooked.

A what-if I would add would be What If Gordon Brown called a snap election when he became leader in 2007? He was wayyyy ahead in the polls, it was pre-banking crsis and David Cameron was on the ropes.
The last decade of austerity, Brexit, Scottish Independence etc, would be very different.

Not getting elected into power was one of Brown's 2 mistakes.
The other was selling the uk gold reserve for rok botom prices.
If he had not done this we could have avoided all austerity and been a finacial world power.
And not some jingoistic isolationist with our heads in the sand and wanting to blame "aliens"
