With an animated Super Mario film on the way, I thought it would be interesting to ask how we would all approach it. This would be mine:
Super Mario Bros.: It Takes Two
Cast: John Barrowman (Mario), Tom Holland (Luigi), Alison Brie (Yoshi), Amanda Seyfried (Princess Peach), Nancy Cartwright (Toad), Michael Keaton (Bowser), Harry Shearer (Goomba), Andrew Stanton (Koopa Troopa), Sophie Aldred (Hammer Bro), Timothy Spall (King Boo), Josh Hutcherson (Bowser Jnr), Johnny Depp (Professor E. Gadd)
Plot: In the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario (John Barrowman) is the presenter of a Cowboy Builders-type programme about dodgy plumbing. Luigi (Tom Holland) watches the show in dismay with his famous brother, fed up with living in his shadow. He wants to be a hero to the people just like the one Mario became when he saved Princess Peach (Amanda Seyfried) from evil fire-breathing turtle Bowser (Michael Keaton) when they visited Peach's castle for a plumbing job on the day Bowser tried to claim the throne from Peach.
Meanwhile, Bowser is also watching Mario's show in his fortress and is jealous of Mario's success. He plans his revenge on the plumber, purposefully breaking his own plumbing and blaming it on Mario in an attempt to smear his arch enemy's reputation.
The next day, the toad people of the Mushroom Kingdom are talking in shocked terms about Mario's shady job with Bowser's plumbing and when Mario protests that he never had anything to do with it nobody will listen. Luigi suggests they confront Bowser themselves to save their business, but their van breaks down before they even set off.
Now sporting backpacks, they visit a Yoshi (Alison Brie) farm run by Toad (Nancy Cartwright), and they rent a couple of Yoshis for the journey.
Bowser sends an army of Goombas (Harry Shearer) out to check on the Mario brothers and Peach's journey to the fortress.
The appearance of the Goombas on the edge of the Mushroom Kingdom send Mario and Luigi flying from their Yoshis, as the Yoshis scarper in fear. The Goombas approach fast, but then Peach appears on the realistic T-Rex from Super Mario Odyssey and punches a question mark block. A fire flower falls onto her, and she kills the Goombas with fire. Mario thanks her for the rescue, but Peach says she's glad to have returned the favour.
Mario & Luigi catch up with their Yoshis and follow the Princess to the Desert Kingdom, where they encounter Pokeys. The Yoshis extend their tongue and eat each segment of the Pokeys' spikey bodies.
Bowser receives an update on the plumbers' progress from a Goomba. Bowser is furious, and threatens to wipe out every Goomba if they don't stop the plumbers teaching the fortress. He sends some Koopa Troopas (Andrew Stanton) to try and stop the trio.
The trio arrive in a Wild West town. They enter a saloon, where the cowboys are all camel people. Suddenly a Koopa Troopa comes in and challenges Mario to a duel. Luigi offers to take his brother's place and everybody in the saloon laughs. The Koopa Troopa accepts the offer.
Mario takes Luigi to one side and asks him what he's doing. Luigi says he wants to prove himself as being just as capable of being a hero.
The next day at midday, the Koopa Troopa and Luigi have their stand-off. The Koopa Troopa is holding their green shell from behind its back and Luigi a sink plunger. The Koopa Troopa strikes first, tossing the green shell. It hits Luigi, sending him flying backwards. Mario and Peach rush to his aid. The Koopa Troopa says he is taking the three of them captive, but Mario kicks the shell and it knocks the Koopa Troopa onto its back unable to move. Peach returns to her T-Rex and Mario and Luigi their Yoshis before the shell spins back towards them, and they journey onto the next kingdom.
As evening strikes, they arrive in the Seaside Kingdom (as seen in Super Mario Odyssey) and meet up with the snail people. They mention some tourists who have recently arrived and been unsettling them. Luigi realises this must be the Koopa Troopas. Sure enough, they appear.
Mario tells Luigi of a trick he wants to try with him. When the green shell comes towards them, Mario will kick the shell then upon its return journey Luigi will kick it back. The Koopa Troopa at the front throws its shell and they put this into practice. The plan succeeds and they defeat every Koopa Troopa in the group.
Peach meanwhile is trying some beach volleyball (only with a green Koopa Troopa shell instead of a volleyball, suggesting Peach has been busy herself) with the locals and remarks how she misses playing this game with 'some friends from the SEGA Kingdom' at the last Olympics. Mario and Luigi catch up with Peach, and Mario suggests they stay in his hotel 'Hotel Mario'.
The next day, Peach meets up with the plumbers in the reception area and complains that the hotel was swarming with creatures. Mario apologises and states he spent the entire night shutting doors to keep them out of his guests' rooms.
They continue their journey, leaving the Seaside Kingdom behind.
A Koopa Troopa relays the events at the Seaside Kingdom and Wild West town to Bowser. Bowser is fuming, and sends an army of Hammer Bros. (Sophie Aldred) to deal with them.
Mario and Luigi are relaxing in the grassland of Yoshi's Island whilst their Yoshis hang out with their own species. Peach arrives and warns about some Hammer Bros. in the area. She shows them how to hit a question mark block and use a power-up. There are three question blocks in a row. Peach, Mario and Luigi all hit a block, and are given Hammer Suits, turning them into Hammer Bros. There's a big hammer fight sequence between the trio and the Hammer Bros. which the trio ultimately win.
Bowser receives news from a Hammer Bro. about the Hammer Bros.' defeat, and launches into a furious rant about how useless his army of Mario enemies are. He decides to send King Boo (Timothy Spall) and Bowser Jnr (Josh Hutcherson) on a mission to kidnap them and bring them to him.
Meanwhile, the trio are staying in a Yoshi's Island branch of Hotel Mario. Luigi hears some chatter that sounds like King Boo and Bowser Jnr during the night. He yawns, gets up and decides to visit Mario's room to see if he heard the same thing. Mario is missing. Alert, he decides he better warn Princess Peach. She's also gone. Luigi asks the toads behind the reception desk if they saw King Boo and Bowser Jnr leave with Mario and Princess Peach. They say they did. Luigi asks if they have any idea where they were going, and the Toads mention that they heard them muttering something about taking Mario and Peach back to their 'master'.
Luigi hops onto his Yoshi and leaves Yoshi Island. He arrives at his mansion, where Professor E Gadd (Johnny Depp) is waiting with a Poltergust 3000 for Luigi to fight King Boo with. Luigi thanks E Gadd and sets off for Bowser's fortress in Bowser's Kingdom.
King Boo and Bowser Jnr deliver Mario and Peach to Bowser. Bowser laughs. Bowser Jnr is surprised he's not unhappy that they failed to kidnap Luigi too, but Bowser admits he had forgotten all about 'the other brother'.
Luigi kicks the door down and fires up the Poltergust 3000. King Boo becomes caught in the stream but puts up a fight to escape. Mario runs over to Luigi and pulls him back from behind. King Boo is captured in the Poltergust. Mario and Luigi turn their attention to Bowser Jnr and Peach. Mario tries jumping on Bowser Jnr's head but it makes no difference and Bowser Jnr retaliates by scratching at Mario. Mario and Luigi both come to the conclusion that the only way they'll take down Bowser Jnr. is if they work together. They are not 'Mario and Luigi', they are 'The Mario Brothers'. Luigi jumps onto Mario, then Mario throws him into the air. He lands perfectly on Bowser Jnr., leaving Bowser Jnr. dizzy. Peach rejoins the Mario bros.
Together they confront Bowser on a bridge with a river of lava underneath. Bowser admits he broke his own plumbing in order to destroy Mario's reputation. Bowser eats a mega mushroom and grows massive in size. Mario, Luigi and Peach take out mega mushrooms and become giant-sized. In their new forms, they take on Bowser, ducking and diving inbetween the fire from Bowser's mouth and throwing punches and kicks when possible. Luigi spots the weird axe switch that removes the bridge from the original NES game and shouts at his friends to get off. They obey and Luigi flicks the switch just before Bowser manages to get to safety. Luigi watches as he falls into the lava and, instantly regretting his decision, he shouts at Mario and Peach to grab Bowser's hand and pull him to land. They manage to save him. Luigi calls over to Bowser that he lost and reveals that the phone in his backpack recorded everything. He darts out the back door of the fortress before Bowser can stop him. Bowser warns that 'this isn't over'.
Their reputation saved, the plumbers return to the Mushroom Kingdom with Peach. Luigi uploads the recorded sound file onto an audio cloud-streaming site, and receives lots of comments back hailing him a hero. Mario pats him on the back and hails Luigi as 'The true hero of the Mushroom Kingdom'.
The last scene of the film would be a mid-credits sequence: an advert for a fake reality driving competition show featuring Mario, Luigi and a whole host of other characters called Mario Kart. This would set up the sequel 'Super Mario Bros. : Carry On Karting', which would effectively be like a combination of the Carry On films and Wacky Races.
