Quick question: I know zero about DS except for the genre and the settings, which definitely appeal.
Will I be able to get into the audios, having never seen a single episode of the series? (At this price I'll probably try anyway!)

(At this price I'll probably try anyway!) The audiobooks in this either explore character backstories, don't depend on them or give you all the information you need. The Full Casts, you're given enough information to know who the characters are, but there may be lines and references that will fly over your head. All come highly recommended though.

(At this price I'll probably try anyway!) While there are certainly other titles in the range that may be more newbie-friendly, I honestly don’t think that ANY of them absolutely need you to be familiar with backstory. They are all engaging and creepy stories in their own rights. Normally, we would direct people to start with “House by the Sea” and “Bloodlust” but at these prices, grab up anything you can! Think of this—I missed the entire first 250 episodes of the TV series...but after a week, I was up to speed enough to plunge in with ZERO backstory. The same will be applicable here...yeah, context helps, but you’ll do just fine without it...and you can always go back and fill in the gaps later. The sale is too good to pass up!

Thanks very much - after a quick search I've found I bought 'The House by the Sea' as a random item in a Colin Baker sale, but I've never listened to it. So I can start there.

That's what I did a few years back and such things did nothing to dampen my enthusiasm for these excellent audios

That is, in my opinion, an excellent choice. For one thing, Colin is amazing in it, but also it's a really good opener as his character is new to town. Another is "The Creeping Fog" which is totally standalone and you can also get the first episode of "Bloodlust" for free and that is expressly designed to be totally accessible to new listeners. You follow a new couple into town and experience it through their eyes.

I started my Dark Shadows listening with "Clothes of Sand" and "The Ghost Watcher". I had never seen an episode of Dark Shadows before hearing these, and they -made- me a fan. It was after loving the audios that I started watching the show.
And then when I had seen more of the show, I went back and listened to the audios again and had a new appreciation for them.
But I'll never forget that feeling of listening to these two audios and being wrapped up in a new, strange and mysterious world.
The nature of soap operas are that you can dive into them at any time and you'll be told what you need to know as you go, and you'll drawn into the new stories.

I've never watched the show and this is my favorite range that BF do! Some stuff I would google and use Wikipedia to understand, but you definitely get a feel for the characters. The show is for sure not required to enjoy the series. The first full cast I found confusing and a bit dull so I never got into them originally. I then got the second full cast and liked that, then bloodlust came out and I was hooked. I devoured the single discs then. I've tried to watch the show but never got into it, but the big finish ones I always enjoy! Dive in!

Out of curiosity, I just looked at the episodes on sale. They seem to start in the middle of a series of stories, not at any good starting place.

I didn't realize that there are three different ranges listed for Dark Shadows. I've never watched the show. Except a school friend and I used to turn it on after school and make fun of the images with the sound off. (Sorry! we were young adolescents at the time! )
