Am I the only one who doesn't really have a problem with Beryl Reid's performance in Earthshock? For me, she nailed the air of command and determination perfectly. I know a lot of fans have criticised her performance , but I've never really found much fault with it. I know Beryl Reid behind the scenes didn't really get science fiction (although she was pleased to be on Doctor Who), but it really doesn't show in her performance at all. She's a ruthlessly efficient boss.

Its not dreadful but it sticks out like a sore thumb. The 1st 2 Eps really showcase the best of suspense and action then you've this screeching Older woman with the Red Rinse hair obsessing about getting her delivery in on time. and we never find out what's supposed to be in the slios that's so important that the freighter can get it to Earth during a Red Alert And still be fined if its late!

Rula Lenska's Styles in Resurrection of the Daleks was probably closer to authorial intent, but I don't mind it. I have to wonder how Briggs got her freighter, though. Walking onto the bridge she has that air of "Dammit, I've paid for this thing and dammit, I'm going to keep it." Almost as if it's one whole expensive hobby that she's committed to with everything she's got, like yacht racing or flying biplanes in retirement. It's all been done to prove a point and that bonus she's willing to risk against the Doctor and Adric's word could make or break the furtherment of this dream.

You know, now that you mention it, I actually do rather like Attack of the Cybermen ...

Reid has a cameo in the BBC's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and she is brilliant - I was surprised by just how good the first time I watched it. Earthshock's director Peter Grimwade worked on Tinker ... On the basis of Reid's performance in Tinker I can understand why he would have thought she was suitable for a serious role in a production like Earthshock. Not saying her performance was OK in Earthshock, I think she was somewhat miscast, but I would defend her ability and reputation as a serious dramatic actress.

I felt she was the most interesting and memorable part of the otherwise quite bland supporting cast. I think most of the objections to her are people not being able to get over seeing Beryl Reid. If she'd never been in anything else, I don't think anybody would have objected to her part.

Not saying her performance was OK in Earthshock, I think she was somewhat miscast, but I would defend her ability and reputation as a serious dramatic actress. She reprises her role as Connie Sachs in Smiley's People (the sequel to Tinker Tailor) and was very sad and moving opposite Alec Guinness, as her character is fading but still formidable for her talents. One cannot deny her acting ability. I never had an issue with her appearance in Earthshock and it's only latterly on learning of the intention for a Sigourney Weaver style character that i see the potential for what might have been, for older viewers at least. As it is I still find her appearance as welcoming as I did at the time, being a young viewer as i was then (10) , as she was a familiar guest face, in what seemed an otherwise humour free story. A light touch but not played up for laughs element is where Tom Baker succeeded to viewers in his prime. Such casting touches stop things being too grim for a younger audience. She is awfully creepy as Worzel Gummidge's 'mother' in the series (opposite Jon Pertwee) though, for anyone wanting to revisit that series. I re-watched it recently and found her positively sinister in her facade of motherly affection with a simmering threat of violence.
