Big Finish has done a lovely job both expanding the Dark Shadows universe and reinforcing parts of the older narratives (like the brilliant Haunted Refrain). They have brought back original actors and complimenting them with new actors and writers have built wonderfully compelling tales. The stories have more deeply delved into newer horror tropes, but also built upon the brilliance of the old Gothic horror classics the original series borrowed from. Writers have weaved together old characters with each other and even their parallel time counterparts (like Cyrus, John, and Sabrina).
I think the two biggest strengths of this adaptation from the original series has been the non-live recording, having actors seemingly bounce off each other despite the fact the recordings were done days/months/years (with a few clips from the original series) and continents apart. Plus, I'm sure some of the flubs have been so expertly smoothed out that listeners would never know. The other strength has been the variety within the recordings- both in time and format. We have smaller tales and long form adventures. First person (usually with the interjection of one or two other voices) narrations and third person with seemingly massive casts. Subtle dramas to high impact adventures.

After listening to more than a few of them now i slipped on the original series dvd i have the commencement of the Barnabas story and have been totally captivated again and the characters are so expanded in my mind after listening to the audios.Yerp there are a few camera shadows that appear but am even more sucked into it due to the Big Finish dramas.
