Why is everybody getting annoyed with what was said about peter Capaldi recently in an article? To quote
“And what a great way to refresh a franchise, especially after four years of Peter Capaldi, who certainly wasn’t universally loved“
Like i love Capaldi loads hes probs in my top three if i were so inclined to have one, but i mean he has got a point. He wasn't universally loved and the ratings did go down during his era and yes you can say “But production” or “But writing” but at the end of the day he didnt het the ratings just as Mccoy didnt get ratings and its not a bad statement to say such. Hell its not even offensive hes just saying he wasnt universally loved, at least in comparison to tennant which was obviously implied.
Anyways i dunno why im getting bothered over an over reaction in the doctor who famdom its hardly something new i just dont get why they are so bothered.

Because it’s showing that’s BBC News has a smug sense of self-importance.

Because it’s showing that’s BBC News has a smug sense of self-importance. I found the wording of it especially unpleasant it read like it was blaming Capaldi directly rather the perceived flaws of his era and came across if the writer was trying to inject his own opinion as the subjective truth, as someone who has been told by online 'fans' more than a few times that I'm an idiot and flat out wrong for liking the Capaldi era far beyond the other periods of New Who, I do get a bit jaded with the fanbase/critics sometimes.

Tbf, not trying to play devils advocate or anything, but he has made a further statement in response saying how he does love capaldi hes just aware he wasnt universally loved. Which as i see it, again my interpretation and my connotations could be wrong, but id say it is code for the casual audience didnt like him and i would say thats a fair claim to make looking at the figures.
Anyway ill stop interjection now and let people discuss. I mean if anything, its heartening to see so many people on the internet defending capaldi as i agree that some people are really rude online about capaldi if you go to the wrong places. I just dont necessarily think this writer is one of said people.

Storm in a teacup. When Jodie's ep airs next week that's all that anyone will be talking about. This'll be forgotten like so much rain.
If the writer had one more line "Amidst the last three series having lower ratings than the show has seen since it returned to the air in 2005, it may be that...." then it wouldn't even be a thing right now as that's factually based. Just saying "universally loved" is sloppy as it's not quantifiable. Even Tennant - THE Doctor for the 21st century - isn't "universally loved".

Once again, davy speaking the truth.
Let's call some brass tacks here: it's sad this happened, and I've said my piece on it. However, Jodie's got a bunch of interviews this week, including the Graham Norton show, which will quickly eclipse this. Indeed, expecta bunch of reaction and analysis videos on Youtube shortly after.
Same thing happened when people freaked about the World Cup Teaser: SDCC happened. People freaked about the glass ceiling ad: then Chris came out with the 'writers didn't know 13's gender' statement. Same thing will happen here, just you watch.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

It was poorly phrased. The reaction on Twitter has been heartwarming, though. As Davy said in the other thread, the same sentiment could have been expressed in a far more tactful and pleasant way in reference to the ratings rather than referring to Mr Capaldi in a way that infers his Doctor was anything less than adequate. Even people who dislike the show have said he was superb. He is easily one of the best actors to have essayed the role in the history of the programme was and - as I've said numerous times - turned me back into a fan of the show.

Hello again.
Oh dear another dodgy statement from Auntie. The popularity and viewing figures of any long running show ebb and flow for any number of reasons.l
No Doctor is 'universally loved'. My mum couldn't stand the popular Dr. Tom preferring Hartnell and Pertwee. Most viewers and fans have their favourite Doctor.
In our house, our girls did not appreciate what appeared to be a Doctor putting Clara down in series 8 and they only came back because of Pearl Mackie's Bill Potts.
The Capaldi era has some excellent stories and Peter Capaldi's portrayal of the Doctor as abrasive, unpredictable, funny, passionate and scary was extremely watchable.
Those who have switched off after Matt Smith have missed out on an interesting journey particularly series 8 and 10. There was a darker, more complex tone to his era, which I really enjoyed.
Though Hell Bent and "The moon is an egg", really?!!

Though Hell Bent and "The moon is an egg", really?!! I've never had a problem with 'the moon is an egg'. It's not the only silly story premise, and yet it seems to remain a sticking point for many, whereas psychic paper, travelling in time in what appears to be a police box (which also translates any language, except when it doesn't), a main character who becomes someone else every few years, a universe taken over by shouting pepper-pots and - let's face it - a sonic screwdriver, doesn't.

Hello again.
Good points paz, well made. A lot of Doctor Who if analysed too closely is ridiculous. I just really took against this eggmoon idea, I don't know why, I just did! Now Button Moon makes perfect sense!
