The Key to Time, an object of unknowable power. All the story arcs around it so far have involved the Doctor searching for the six segments with the fate of the universe at stake. The first time the Fourth Doctor and Romana sought out the segments in season 16. The White Guardian tasked the Seventh Doctor, Ace and Benny with locating the segments when they were disguised as items along the Doctor's time track to set his history back on track. The Grace sent two sentient tracers to assemble the Key to prevent the destruction of the universe, with the Fifth Doctor and Guardians Black and White ending up with a stake in proceedings.
But could it come into the revived series? Maybe shaking up the formula by the disguised segments being present across the stories, but not always identified as segments by the Doctor until later in the arc. It'd be a way to update the Black and White Guardians, perhaps they have an agent each trying to locate the segments. The finale would be the Doctor and their companions being in the middle of a battle between order and chaos as both sides are at a stalemate. It's a nice call back to the Classic Series while putting a new spin on the storyline. It's also an opportunity to look at order and chaos in today's world, and the relationship they have with the White and Black Guardians, and an examination of the relationship between order and chaos. If Lalla Ward can guest star as Romana, perhaps manifesting through the Key somehow, all the better. Her reaction to the Thirteenth Doctor would be memorable ("Welcome to the sisterhood Doctor")

Hasn’t Chibbers said that other thsn the Doctor, the TARDIS and the sonic screwdriver there’s nothing from the old series? And that there’s not overarching plotline?

The only returning characters need to be The Guardians in the finale. Depending on if the companions stick around and their characters arcs, temptation may be on the cards.

I do like "Welcome to the sisterhood," it's a very Romana-esque line. It's certainly a possibility, if not one for the immediate present. There was a really good comic of The Ten Doctors by Rich Morris that had a reimagined Black and White Guardian turn up as part of the proceedings. It had some very interesting things to say about which figures represented which side. It's not what you might initially expect when things are taken at face value. At some point, I'd be very interested in seeing maybe a one-off story that deals with all the havoc that just a single segment can cause on a planet or population when tampered with. The Fifth Doctor remembers the Master finding one and ripping apart an entire constellation with its power.
