You know what, I have NEVER played with dolls and only ever possessed a single Barbie doll in my life (a failed last attempt to make me more "girly"). But I think I might get this.

It’s merchandising targeted at a different demographic. No different to any other licensed merchandise like action figures, Funko Pop Vinyls or even Lego sets.

Not my cup of tea....

If there’s a market for it then why not? It’s not as if it’s a bad product.

This comment comes from a girl who HATED to be put into gender assigned toy ranges since my favorite toys were for boys and I LOVED my knights castle with the catapults...

The target demographic for Barbie is young girls. However many things attract attention and interest from other demographics that aren’t typically associated with the product. Bronies for example.

Yes, I know. The point I was trying to make was that I was very unhappy as a child for not being being able to play with the things I wanted until my granddad in his wisdom gifted me my army of knights in shining armour (target demographic- boys) to conquer the world with. He invoked the wrath of my narrow minded parents but earned my undying love. I just would hate for a boy going through the same anguish if he so wished to play with Doctor Who barbie dolls (which have the plus of the realistic clothing). It is 2018 after all and not back in the 80s when I was a child, and these narrow lines are starting to soften up. You cannot put people into boxes neatly labelled XX and XY anymore.

Anyways, although not the target demographic and a girl who never played with dolls, this will be the first ever doll I am most likely to buy. I put it onto my bucketlist, I think it looks great.

The toy companies themselves still insist on keeping that line as starkly drawn as possible. @omega mentioned LEGOs, but just look at how they don't make 'normal'/ ddefault minifigs for the girl-targeted lines. They put in those oversized doll-like figurines that are deliberately designed not to match.

There are already videos available of parents letting their little kids decide what they want and how the kids get into arguements with the employees in the stores. And these kids make some great valid points.
Just because the companies still have old fashioned marketing, does not mean this is not going to change, and I actually can see the change in attitutes in parents and even in my own family already. There is indeed progress. If this continues, the marketing strategies will also change. Give it some more time. Rome was not built in a day.
And do not get me started on these awful girl legoes...

And do not get me started on these awful girl legoes... Right there with you on the gender based toys, and especially girl legos.
Kids should be able to play with whatever they want to play with, regardless of gender.
