There is a reason. My nephew has already asked that question of how it is possible to suddenly become a woman when you were a man. Maybe it could suffice that Time Lords are special people who might turn into anyone when they regenerate? I think that's about all I really have for an in-universe reason. I wouldn't mind at all if someone comes up with a more detailed explanation, but I think I'd be just as happy if they take their time and make it a really good one. If it's any consolation, I think it's taken a long time to learn as much about Gallifrey as we do know. I'm not sure I think we even got a proper look at it until The Deadly Assassin, some 13 years after the series began.

My nephew has already asked that question of how it is possible to suddenly become a woman when you were a man. You can't explain that, but you can explain how someone becomes someone else? Sure your nephews question is valid and perfectly understandable, but just because he asked it doesn't mean he hit on some deep insight or flaw, there's hundreds if not thousands of questions you can ask about The Doctor and The Timelords which have no real explanation. If "how can somebody who was a man become a woman?" is so profoundly perplexing to you in a work of fiction, what about those who in real life do it? Or what about the question "If someone can change their body, why couldn't they change sex?".

Well, maybe one of the answers would be that gender is not genetically determined in Timelords, like for example in some reptiles, fish and amphibians. They determine sex for example by temperature of the eggs incubation, they have only one set of chromosomes for one gender while the other has two (bees, where males have only one) or change sex if only one sex is present because maybe the dominant male/ female has died. Only birds and mammals came up with the crazy idea of sex chromosomes- funny thing is, birds are exactly the opposite from mammals, and female birds are XY and the males are XX. But I admit that is WAAAAYYY to techical to explain to a kid... And when I watch a TV show, I want some entertainment and not some cringeworthy half-assed science cooked up by someone who has no clue (one of the most famous biological examples were the Ocampa from Star Trek Vovager- a race that would have died out after only a few generations because they only ever produce ONE child...). When I want hard science, I go to work and spend my day in the lab...

Although it occurs to me from a genetics POV, that if your changing your body, hair colour, eye colour, skin colour and do much more besides, wouldn't it be odd if sex was singled out to be the only genetics that can't change?

Changing gender, hair and eye colour doesn't bother me as much as changing accent (6 to 7 to 8 to 9 to 10 to 11 to 12 to 13) or regenerating with a tattoo (3)!

Good news on the man with the dragon tattoo , they were able to explain it away later on as a Time Lord criminal mark. Apparently, the prisoners on Shada have similar branding. It might have been the initial source of the Doctor's mental block in exile. Time Lords apparently absorb a certain degree of genetic material from their surrounding environment when they regenerate. In theory, if the Doctor were in the presence of alien species during the Change enough times, he'd pick up some of their characteristics by metamorphic osmosis (which is "Lesterson listen" levels fun to say ). Circular Time showed us that they don't even have to be the same species when they change. But Time Lords don't like talking about biology. It's one of their intellectual taboos. They're an advanced civilisation who are supposed to have evolved beyond their base animal ancestors... but are still reliant on their own squishy organic nature. So there's a great deal they could likely accomplish that not even they know about.

Boy, we were lucky then that Pertwee already had a tatoo when playing the Doctor and did not need to get one for the role...
Well, this still does not explain the accents... they are not genetic...
And since they have "evolved" so far... (not sure if you can call it that) no wonder they wanted to ascent to a higher plain of existance and become energy beings...
But enough with the teasing, I agree. I also do not need any more explanations. But I am aware that some parts of the fandom will always come up with more or less ridiculous, strange and wonderful explanations for everything.

I know, right? So considerate on Pertwee's part... Lots of planets have a north? Yeah, I've no in-universe explanation for that one either... Sometimes, if we're having a good day, all three at once... Doctor Who's got to be one of my favourite fandoms to theorise in. There's just so much scope for new ideas and hypotheses. It's so much fun.

Dude, why do you keep posting pictures of the Gimp in this thread? I really think that would be even more controversial than a female Doctor was...

I remember my 1st "fandom query" 30 odd years ago was "why does every alien race speak with an English accent?"
LOL

There is a reason. My nephew has already asked that question of how it is possible to suddenly become a woman when you were a man.To opt out without providing a satisfactory explanation is copping out and only serves to justify we just did it and thats it.They didnât have Bill Potts in the show because they needed a show where no one would ask the question, they wiped out the Doctors family(conveniently(and and also No previous monsters from the past as they might certainly ask that question. Like many fans will always ask that question. The BlasĂ© way in Hell bent irritated me i must admit. Will the show conveniently bump off everyone that might go wait a minute how does this work? Anyways that will always be my question and i will always be in doubt about it all.Missy i accepted as the Master would go to absolutely any lengths to stay alive gender change etc.The Doctor? And before it goes further(ie in futile thread arguing) thats my last word on it lol. Be careful how you answer that question. He might wake up one day wanting to be a girl. (Not that there is anything wrong with that)!
