Shada is good anytime, anywhere, anyhow, but if you had to pick, which one is your preferred way to enjoy Adams' magnum opus?

Shada is good anytime, anywhere, anyhow, but if you had to pick, which one is your preferred way to enjoy Adams' magnum opus? Well, TBH I think that Shada is massively overrated as a story. Its certainly not 'bad' but it is not the lost Douglas Adams masterpiece of legend, either. Just a middling tale, some good elements of which were put to better use later on in the first Dirk Gently book.
But that said, the recent animated version was a bit of a triumph and, for mine, the definitive take on the story.

Hmmm.... I had to go with the Eighth Doctor (audio) version. But I do agree that Shada is overrated within fandom. It is a good story but there are many better Fourth Doctor stories out there. So I'm happy to count Shada as part of my BF Eighth Doctor continuity.

I've a soft spot for the Paul McGann version. It was one of my first Eighth Doctor stories and I have some very fond, starry-eyed memories of listening to it for my first trip going overseas.

Hmmm... I started out with the book and really liked it, then I watched the TV versions. It is a great story for Tom Baker. Especially the first few episodes are terrific, the last episode drags a bit in my opinion. The Big Finish version I heard last, and I have to say for my ears it somehow sounded wrong. Somehow I just cannot picture the 8th Doctor in this. I am not faulting McGanns performance, but him saying Baker's text... it completely broke my immersion. I would be curious if other people had the same experience or if it is just me.

I’ve only seen the recent animated version. I do own the original DVD release (which has the Tom Baker inserts and I believe the webcast version of the McGann one), but have never got round to it. It’s been stubbornly sat on a shelf in my uni rooms for thriee years now.

I don't know if I can vote. Like many long time fans my first real exposure was the Baker narrated reconstruction. If only a little bit more had been completed back then, I think I would favor that one.

I need to be able to vote for more than one. My first exposure was the Baker narrated reconstruction and I did enjoy that. But I thought the Big Finish version with Paul McGann, as well as the animation of it, were also very enjoyable.
